How do ye find the jerseys in general? Do ye have trouble getting rid of the bull calves and would you recommend them over holsteins or friesens? I'll definitely be going dairy farming once I take over but undecided to go fro Jersey for the high milk price and eat very little so you can keep more or for fleckvieh and the decent milk price and they're a dual purpose breed so the calves are worth a good bit and should be handy enough to sell on

Hey! We find the jerseys fine to be honest. There’s a few that are a little bit excited but we spend a lot of time handling them when they’re young so they normally settle down once they’re cows 😊 We don’t have a problem with bull calves, a local farmer buys them from us and rears them for bulls. Most importantly is that all calves on the farm get treated the same whether they are a crossbred bull or a high EBI heifer. We put a lot of effort into giving them a good start. Personally we prefer the crossbred, just find them an easy care animal and they are able to look after themselves compared to the Friesians. There’s definitely a great boost with the milk price and once you have a good reputable outsource for the calves then it shouldn’t be a problem 😊 best of luck and let us know how it goes 😄

@@keanefamilyfarm thanks very much! 😀 very important to look after the calves well as most in our local mart at height of calving season always have scour, most likely never got colostrum, registered a good few days older to get them into the mart earlier so they shouldn't complain when they make a euro or two. I hear a lot of giving out about the jerseys but all the complaints are from old fellas who refuse to change so good to hear a positive review 😂 they're mad to have a good beef animal at the end of it but if they're only making 2 euro a kilo in the mart then what's the point 🤔

What do you think of Herdwatch?
@keanefamilyfarm
@keanefamilyfarm 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Una. We use Herdwatch for registering calves and for movement certs. It’s also handy for quickly looking up information on an animal in the herd. I know it has a lot more features (medicines & weight) but we just haven’t got into using them to be honest. It’s pricey enough for what we use it for but maybe if we utilised all of the features better, we’d probably get more out of it 😊 There’s also Herdapp that people seem to be happy with but we don’t have any personal experience of that one 😊

What weight do you want the calves to be by service? When do you serve them? Are they all cross bred?
