There was a brilliant comment here once which explained this song so well and it's too bad it's not in the top comments anymore. This song/video is about this boy who is doing the same thing over and over. Even if it's harmful for him he can't stop doing it. The aged man is the future boy who ends up all alone and dies in the end, because he wasn't able to change. Personally I find the idea brilliant because change can be so hard sometimes. We tend to do things over and over again just because we're afraid of change, even if we know we need to change. We're weird creatures sometimes :)

VirtualLionelMessi you've ressurected the brilliance. And you've made a point....a pointed aspect of our fallen human nature. We don't just do the harmful.... we also don't do the good. And many times we watch ourselves doing... or not doing... almost helpless. Almost. It's a thought to consider when we come face to face with handicap people who often times are at the mercy of their syndrome. Our excuse is far more flimsy. But there is hope! Romans 7

The most powerful line in this song is a simple one "I get it no I get it, can't help those who don't wannabe helped" ive been in that position of refusing help now the pain of seeing those who don't wanna help themselves is heart breaking I lost a baby when I was 19 I genuinely believed that would be the end of me, I wasn't seen by friends for months this song is so deep for so many reasons

Maybe the stair scrubbing is just trying to show that he did the same things over and over in his life, things that didn't make him him happy. The love of his life left him because of him never changing his ways. The X's on the wall are days that he wasted in his life doing things that served no purpose. He knew from an early age that he was wasting his life but never/could never change. He finally *realized* that he had wasted his whole life, which is when he "meets" his younger self, and he committed suicide thinking there was no where to go but down..... as in down the negative stairwell that he had been working on his whole life? Just my thoughts.

Sounds pretty logical actually, however: I don't think he commited suicide at the end. I think he just passed away because of his bad lifestyle.

Maybe it was that he was reflecting on his past while he was asleep. Well. Dying*. But yeah, possibly it was that he was dying and realizing his bad choices as a younger person and reflecting on all the things he lost. Then when he gets the bat and stuff, it was him mentally taking out his anger as to what he was doing with himself. The X's could be how long he was trapped in his thoughts. Idunno. I guess the thing about these videos is you take away from it what you feel you relate to. There's never really a right answer :P

People get so upset when bands let their sound evolve over time. It's still cool listening to the old stuff we all fell in love with, but that doesn't mean you can't still fall in love with the new stuff. We expect these bands to just to keep screaming about being angry, but they grow up just like us. The songs become more reflective and deeper, but we can still relate even though we aren't teens listening to them anymore. This has happened to almost every band I listened to back in high school, but I'm glad they are all still making music and living their dreams.

People fear change. Plain and simple. As fans, we either need to embrace the change, quit listening, or moan about the past. Im a casual fan of ADTR, so maybe I can't say much. But what you say about bands growing up is true.

Zach Dillon it is. Some people can't embrace it. Many people also don't the like the new sound of the band "The Offspring", Dexter Holland, the singer, was with the band when they formed in '85 when be was 20. Now he's 49 and of coarse him and his band's music isn't going to sound the same. And as a quote from one of The Offspring's new songs "Those days go by, and we all start again. What we had and what we lost, it's all memories in the wind. Those days go by, and we all start again."

I've said it once, and i'm gonna say it again: Let people interpret the song how they want. There's no right or wrong way to perceive the song. Everyone will look at it differently. That's the beauty in the world. Everyone has their own opinion. If you don't like someone elses view on the song, dont bash them for it, just move along and listen to the amazing music that ADTR has put here for us all to enjoy. Thanks for reading, if you did. Bye :)

I found what director have said about this music video: "End Of Me” by A Day To Remember is a dark video about the two male members of a family dealing the loss of the female figure in their life. Director Shane Drake tells the story of a teenage son who has taken on the burden of responsibility for the family since his mother left. He spends most of his time alone and his only interaction with anyone is when he has to take the lit cigarette out of his sleeping father’s hand, taking a drag for himself before putting it out. He takes out his frustration of the walls, appearing to count the days since his mom left by drawing X marks all over his room. As the song intensifies, his emotions boil over, and he begins the react more violently to the situation by taking a baseball bat to his bed. All of this builds to an unexpected twist ending that’s super fun to see people try to figure out in the comments on KZbin."

Everyone has their own story about this song/video but for me.... I literally lived this music video. From 12-19 my mom drank like a fish to pass out after my Gma died. My grandpa, sister, Dad and aunt all left but forgot me in the process. I considered suicide hundreds of times, begged god every night to not let me wake up the next day. I have a few scars. Some from myself and some from her. I felt so alone and forgotten, so much so that as an adult I can’t be alone, I literally hate it. She attempted suicide. And that part of the video where the paramedics rush in really hits home because I remember that, I felt that. Some days it feels like I made it all up, and some days the wounds feel as fresh as they were then. It still really messes with me from time to time. Now I’m 27 married to a beautiful woman with 2 lovely children. Life couldn’t be much better. Like I said it seems so distant at times, and other days it feels like I’m still stuck. I survived. I pulled myself out of the deepest of depression, and honestly now a days no one even has an idea of what I went thru because I don’t show it. I’m happy and smiling all day. I’m positive constantly all because I refuse to be anywhere near the place I was then. This video really hits home and the song as well. It reminds of the bad days but also reminds me I survived because I was meant to do something meaningful in life.

I agree with the person below, love does make you go blind. & i never knew or acknowledged how blind i went until i was sitting in a dark place and realized i gave up my career, myself, dignity, confidence to try to make something unfixable work. Sometimes it really is best to let it go. I think everyone thinks that "they're the one", that they can't bear a life without the other person. but things change man. They truly do. & it's not until you find someone else that the feelings grow just as strong. What i'm trying to say is, if you're ever in a position where you know it's not healthy for you, respect yourself enough to walk away. It'll hurt tremendously the first few days but one day you wake up and feel free, no resentment, no love, no bitterness, just free. That day was today for me. & AdTR helps alot in realizing and coping ❤

Cindy. Recently I looked over my life since nearly dying in hospital, realising the light was dimming the more I remained stuck away from everyone as I took my rage out on the staff after four months of being at rock bottom without tasting fresh air then just before my fifth month they let me go and those moments where I held my family brought my light back. So it's been six years since this song came out and I just found it. I've been a fan of them since 14 and I am 30. This literally is how I feel about my relationship with my father. He beat people, attempted to take life in general (others, himself, animals...) But he kept swearing he loved all of us. I let him go at 24. When this song came out. If I didn't he would have been the end of me. I love him so much. It hurts every day that I can't talk to him. But if I do I'll fall back into being under his dangerous thumb. I can't do it again.

What scares me the most about growing up is that ill make mistakes and end up like this and look back when im 30 or 40 and realize I wasted my life. Im valedictorian of my senior class so far but what does it mean. It really doesnt mean much 5 to 10 years down the road. I have some much hope and dreams I just hope I find the right way to live it all before I die. Being 17 sucks.

In the end we only regret the chances we didn't take. Live the life you want to live, if you don't then it's not your life. I'm in the same boat my friend. I feel the same way, even four years later. You never shake that feeling, but don't feed that doubt. I believe in you.

The best thing you can do is attempt to follow your dreams no matter how risky they are. I'm in the same situation you are in, I just graduated a week or 2 ago and I'm going to follow my dream of being a movie director no matter how risky it is. I COULD get a safe medium wage paying job and I COULD live my life not worrying too much about losing my job but then I'd always be wondering what if I had followed my dream. Our existence is so small in the universe, why attempt to live "safe" if your just going to regret it and not be happy

This song speaks volumes. My girlfriend just broke up with me a couple nights ago over text message. No real reason was given. She has a rough background. Depression, anxiety, trust issues. She cheated on me even. I still stuck around because I love her more than anything else. She was always used, and beaten, and taken advantage of in her previous relationships. When her and I got together, I promised her I would never do anything to hurt her and I would protect her so she didn't have to know that pain anymore. I made her number one in my life. She always took priority. I think I'm just venting at this point, but this song makes me feel understood.

+The Raging Demon Bro i was in your position last year, I know it's tough to let go, it was a hard few months for me to process my own thoughts and after letting her go(she broke up with me), she rushed into another relationship 2 months later and it absolutely killed me, I was so angry and upset that she had let me down like that, after all I did for her, I really beat myself up about it, but now I look back and see that in fact I made it out easy and in the better state of mind. Things will get better.

This song reminds me of when I was obsessed with somebody important I knew. He found out one little lie I told him, but it was a pretty substantial one due to the circumstances. I wanted to die when he basically made it clear that (unless I attend his events and pretend to be someone I'm not, which is worse,) I'll never see or talk to him ever again. He was a close friend of 3 years. So that, being found extremely close to death from a poor choice I made a couple days after that, 2 of my other friends dying in the same week as that, and realizing how much I've squandered my time and money since graduating high school years early made suicidal matters more intense. But each day, with every waking hour, I'm striving harder and harder to make my time important and meaningful because I'm too young to give up and die now. As much as I love this song, I refuse to let someone who, in retrospect, wasn't as good of a person as I made him out to be, be the end of me. I've let go of my obsession, now time to let go of the rest of this depression.

Eventually life started to feel more and more normal till I basically forgot I ever had a problem. Also, idk if ur religious, but praying and asking God for help really got me thru. "I know I wasn't perfect but I kept trying till I forgot why I stayed" Man this song reminds me of my ex girlfriend. When she went away for college, I always had this thought that she might cheat on me but I always kept telling myself, hey maybe she won't. But in the end she actually did. And I forgave her because I loved her so much that I really wanted a future with her. She would get drunk at her friend's house an a hour away and she would drunk call me to pick her up an hour away. I would because I felt bad. She didn't go back to college but instead she went to a community college. She did started changing for the better I guess. Fast forward a year later I started changing I wanted to be left alone everything she did started annoying me. We always fought about the stupidest things. I didn't want to brake up with her because I felt bad. But in the end she decided to go to the army and we broke up. But I guess what I'm trying to say is that love makes some people so blind that you're willing to forget people that don't deserve it. And sometimes you should end things sooner because sometimes things won't change. Sorry I just felt like telling my heartbreak story haha.

wow such an incredible video. It really made me think of this song in a different way. I know there are different opinions of what the music video is about, but i just wanted to give my opinion... I think it is about a son and father who are dealing with the mother leaving them. The Xs on the wall mark the number of days she has been gone. The son and the father are living in this mindset of grief and sadness and cannot find a way to escape which is symbolized through the house. The son is able to let out his anger and frustration and eventually allows himself to heal."I can't suppress the memories.." When he lets himself feel the emotions he has been holding onto he "moves on". His dying could be a metaphor for letting his depression die and starting to live again. When he leaves the house the father senses he is gone and looks for him. When he is doing so he remembers that he has to live for his son and lets his depression die too. They climb the stairs together to start the journey into their new life. The scars on the hands show they were both hurt in the same way. By feeling rejected by their mother and wife. And the son scrubbing the stairs symbolizes how healing is sometimes a hard and grueling process. Sometimes it can seem impossible, but you will get through it and you will see the light again.
