The birthplace of the Scots language, the Borders are an amazing place. Historically the people there, descendants of the Border Reivers, are uniquely distinct from the kilt-wearing bagpipe-playing Scotsman we know. Instead, they wore armoured garments and rode a lot on horseback. I'm surprised no one has made a game about the Reivers yet. Great video

Hi, I'm from the far west of D&G (now residing in London) and I hope you get to spend a day or two over at Portpatrick, Port Logan and the Mull of Galloway: sandy beaches, lighthouses, 60m cliffs, lots of walks and dramatic views. Also September has the Wigtown Book Festival, Scotland's national book town and the Bladnoch whisky distillery nearby. Going along the A75 from Dumfries you will see it getting more remote with only small, but very pretty towns and villages such as Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright, Gatehouse of Fleet, Newton Stewart and down to Wigtown and the Isle of Whithorn. Head north on the A77 from Stranraer to Girvan and the amazing Culzean Castle. My castle avatar is Caerlaverock Castle, a triangular castle with moat just south of Dumfries.

It's sadly easy to kinda... forget about... but I'd say the drive is much nicer (at least from Edinburgh!) down south than it is somewhere like the Cairngorms! Very scenic and be-sheeped!
