Grüezi, dear developers!
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to live in Zürich? In this episode of DevCities, we meet Marius Colaciou, Engineer Lead at Ledgy and nature-connoisseur, to learn about life in the Swiss city. We asked Marius to share some of his favourite local spots and tell us about the culture and work life.
Join us to learn more about why Marius chose startups over corporates like Google, what he thinks about the dev community and quality of life in Switzerland… and why he calls the city a ‘sweaty buffet’.
**Special thanks to Jahlela Hasle, Timo Horstschäfers and Jules Henze.

I've family living in Berne, but as a developer from a 3rd Country is kinda hard to move without the permission, and not many companies are willing to help with that. man but I love Switzerland, I go every year.

I am a software engineer from Italy. Can I work in Zurich with only English or do I need to have a basic understanding of German?
@Honeypotio
@Honeypotio Жыл бұрын
Hey Emanuele, this is what Marius replied in another comment: "Yes, English is enough to work in Zürich. Many jobs in software engineering can be done with English only. I would still recommend once coming here to learn German. It helps to integrate with the local community, although many expats simply go by with English only." Hope this is useful :)

my experience with honeypot was very interesting. I was invited to join a meeting with my "Talent Success Advisor (TSA)" but my TSA never joined the meeting, it was supposed to take place on google meet. When, I wrote to TSA that I am waiting. My "dear" TSA replied with "It looks like the calendar from our side did some mess and didn't notify me of our meeting!" haha how professional!

@marius - What are you work hours in the day. I saw you said you go to work at 7:45-8 but was this a standard work day? What about lunch break and end of day? Thanks!
@MariusColacioiu
@MariusColacioiu Жыл бұрын
Hi. My usual work day starts around 8:30-8:45, either working from home or at the office (usually going there twice a week). If it’s good weather I bike to the office :-). I personally like a longer lunch break, on average 1,5 hours, which accommodates for doing sports (running), practicing some piano or cooking when working from home. At the office I get to socialize more with my colleagues or have a longer lunch occasionally with a friend. I usually end my work day between 18:00-18:30. It happens sometimes to work later, but at most once a week. Working 80%, I have a budget of days I can take during the year, and I usually take Fridays off and have a longer weekend.
