In the mid 1980's along the SP line on a moonless night along I-10 between Tucson and Benson AZ I saw a locomotive operating with one of the Mars lights, and it was something I'll never forget. Never saw one again. I always thought it was something that the engineer would turn on in the vast expanses of the Arizona desert, but now I know that it was likely one of the last locomotives operating a Mars lamp. Thanks Mark!

The Mars light (don't know about the Pyle gyralight) had a "circular" oscillation. Later it displayed a horizontal "figure 8 It also had a feature to switch the light from white to red automatically if the brake pressure went to an emergency application or because of an undesired emergency application (as in "derailment." Now we have "ditch lights"

Nice to see young people interested in trains, not just old gezzers like myself. Hope to make it down to see the loop one of theses days. Keep up the good work.

Back many years ago, I was privileged to ride many Southern Pacific locomotives between Indio, Ca, Yuma, Az, and El Centro, Ca (thanks to some good friend engineers who were willing to take the risk of having a high school teenager in the cab). Most of the F units were equipped with the Mars headlight. The GP-9s usually had the Pyle National units. It was cool at night to watch that headlight beam make circles or a figure eight pattern ahead of you while watching for the next searchlight signal,

My hometown, Princeton WVa., turned the old Virginian RR depot into a museum. It went over very well, they are drawing visitors from all over.

The Mars Light Company was in Chicago, Illinois. In addition to train lights, the Mars Light Company made emergency lights for police, fire and EMS. The Mars 888 light was a popular light for Fire and EMS vehicles due to the 888 pattern of the light.

We had an old fire engine with a red 'MARS' light on the front. It had a metal plate on it that said 'The light from MARS".

Many MANY years ago my Uncle Mackie had a job, not sure what, where he was in with the engineer as they were nearing the Tehachapi Loop. As they got closer Uncle told the engineer he was going too fast. When he didn't respond, Uncle touched his shoulder and found the engineer had died! But Uncle got it slowed enough to get through the Loop!!
