Its very understandable, that the parents of these young soldiers, would be angry. They raised their sons, with the same love & devotion, as Irish Mothers & Fathers rare their children. It was impossible ( particularly back 30yrs ago) for the parents of these soldiers, to even comprehend, the reasons why, there was a war taking place in the 6 counties. The British media never told the British people, the true story, about what was happening, because they where told not to, by the British Government. For centuries, Irish men & women, where treated brutally, by the British planters in our own country. The british robbed all our land, leaving the native Irish to die in the ditches along the side of the road. If an Irish man or woman resisted to the theft of their small farm, they where hung from the nearest tree. An Irish man, couldnt even fish in the local river, for something to feed his starving children, as that was another hanging offense. The tragic deaths of these young soldiers, should be on the conscience, of the British establishment. But its not, because the british establishment needs a continuous flow of young working class men and women, to continue to join the army to fight their "wars". The British goverment couldnt give a toss about the deaths of those young soldiers. You wont see the sons and daughters of the MPs & the gentry & the lords, fighting on the frontline for God & country. But they are more then willing, to send out the sons & daughters, of families from poor working class communities, who often have no other option of finding any work. The british government has no conscience. The Provisional IRA, in secret correspondence with Margaret Thatcher, told her to - "stop sending young soldiers to South Armagh". They continued - "you are sending 18 & 19 boys to their deaths" - "we dont want to kill them, but if you continue to send them, we will continue to kill them". Thatcher continued to send them... RIP to all, who have lost their lives, as a consequence of British imperialism & greed the world over.....

I've *think* actually found the eviction of my ancestors ... And several pretty seasons charges for the group of sons and neighborhood kids throwing rocks and blocking the way with cows intentionally... 1870's&80's... Then they came to America... I've really just learned about so much of this history in the past year. There is so much that either got white washed before being broadcast over here or they really just didn't pass it on. I got a great local story(1980's), a more recent immigrant was playing Santa at the AOH Christmas party, highly inebriated, have a warm Christmas blessing and then cursed Thatcher, in full red suit😮❤. I personally have no recollection. Very colorful language from what I'm told. Old feelings never died I guess🎉

I think you have made very good points. The British government were also the ones who allowed underaged Scottish brothers to serve together in a conflict zone. They knew these kids would have no clue how dangerous their situation was, nor was there any care for the family losing two family members at a time. That was not a decision the Republicans made, the cynicism lies with the British Government.

This is precisely the point. These people are cynically used and abused by a directing stablishment that cares not tuppence for them. The people themselves have that traditional British disease .... exceptionalism and belief in a 'god-given' right to govern anybody they can get force into supine supplication.

John Hume always speaks sense. I had a lot of time for him. And it was a sad day when he passed away. This man whose son was killed is understandably angry. I’ve said it before here, that I could never imagine what it would be like to get that knock on the door, to tell you that your son has been killed. I wonder how this father feels today about NI/the north of Ireland. Does he still harbour the same anger….

Sad that these young English men were sent to their deaths by the ruling elite. They joined because they had no prospects and wanted a life of adventure and fulfilment. These parents obviously know nothing of British imperialism and brutality and that they have no right to occupy another's land. Their anger should be directed at their rulers. These parents are being used by military propaganda. Sad and sickening.

One can only have sympathy for bereaved parents, however this film is pretty gratuitous. The parents are angry ill-informed and lacking in objectivity. Thus was an exercise in viewing figures for Granada rather than an insightful documentary. Thst said the Coldstream Guards Officer was a British voice of reason.

I imagine that officer caught a lot of serious flak for having that opinion at that time. Really took some stones to say it on TV. He was right on and so was Mr. Hume

Sad this Man lost his young Son but they both must have realised when he signed on the Dotted Line he was going to Train to Kill and be Killed for a Colonial Empire that had long since seen it's better days. If it was Irish Soldiers walking the Streets of England armed to the Teeth in areas were they clearly weren't welcome by the Native population then the same would be expected.

, It wasn't Ireland that invaded England, it was England that invaded ireland, just like when Germany invaded France in 1939 and the French resistance was formed I understand Winston Churchill gave the French resistance full support,,, the South and the north of England is very much different yet it is one country the same as Ireland,,,, many people in several countries in the world including, America and England support a free and independent ireland, just like when Gandhi was fighting for home rule in India there was an overwhelming support for Gandhi, and home rule in England not much different to Ireland, the people in the north of Ireland have nothing to fear from there brothers and sisters in the south of Ireland, and in the south of Ireland they have nothing to fear from there brothers and sisters in the North which makes ireland one country and nothing will ever change that it's is how God made the county Ireland....

The gentleman in this,, he allowed his son to go to Northern Ireland, in British Army uniform, with a rifle on his shoulder into a neutral country Ireland he got killed before he managed to kill anyone he knew what he was doing when he signed up in the British Army you shouldn't expect to be made welcome when you invade someone's county however I'm sorry you have lost your son,.....,

You must remember that in the 80s Thatcher had caused so much unemployment and poverty in certain places here on the mainland that the only job available was joining the army. A lot of guys who joined came from areas of high unemployment and didn’t have qualifications for jobs in other areas of the army or other forces and had to join the infantry. It was a job….they had no say in where they were sent to or what to do. I went to school with a few guys that joined up at 16 because it was that or the dole. Blame the politicians.

Forgot to say, I worked for the MoD when I was 17 up on an underwater testing range for the navy. I left that after a couple of years after I decided to be a nurse. I wanted to study at Queens University in Belfast and I got through all the interviews over there and I never had any problems from anyone. Every single person I met and stayed with was lovely. I ended up accepting a place at Stirling University because I ended up getting pregnant and had to delay my start by a year and needed to be closer to home. I’ve been back to Belfast and down to Dublin a good few times since and my opinion hasn’t changed….every person over there that I met was lovely. So sad that so many people were maimed or killed - both sides.

In any conflict when a insurgent/paramilitary force has no uniform mixes in with the civilian population other than informers intelligence gathering they are difficult to identify defeat. The taliban a prime example they claim to be fighting for a Holy cause it certainly complicates any conflict when a military force identifies integrates religious ideology with a political motivation that the home population culturally identifies with.Northern Ireland is thankfully making progress a political strategy negotiation process can yield positive results above and beyond armed conflict.

That man is part of the problem. Suggesting that the british army should enter the irish republic in pursuit of IRA men, stupid unt. A truce is what ended the war here, a peaceful deal that suited all sides, to think of beefing up the british military to try and quash all paramilitarys was the dumbest idea ive ever heard, even a high ranking SAS man said that the way the IRA ran things they would never be beaten, however he also said they would never won because england has deep pockets to fund the military, so all that was going to happen would be more irish and british deaths.

@@Disorder1889 He should have stayed at home grieving with his wife, rather than run off to a foreign country to find out why his soldier son was killed. It was bleeding obvious why he was killed, he was a soldier in a foreign country, and that is what usually happens to soldiers who travel with their weapons to foreign countries. What I found most ridiculous was the Father explaining why he was called to the office at his job, thinking he is either being sacked, or there was a death but he knew no one was sick!!!!!!!? Was he so removed from reality that he didn't know that hundreds of soldiers had been killed in Ireland before his own son enlisted? Did he ever stop to think about how the illegally armed Loyalists forced themselves into the majority by expelling Catholics and dividing the province of Ulster and nation of Ireland that would clearly have out voted them?
