My father served in East Timor for 6 months at the time I was 3 when he left, when he finally came home I was 4. My mother and I were waiting for him at the airport. I ran towards him as soon as I saw him (my mother made sure to show me photos of him and tell me where and what he was doing) and he completely ignored me and walked straight past me because he didn't even recognize me. I have the greatest respect for those whom have and are continuing to serve for their countries, but sometimes these documentaries don't reveal the effects war has on the families at home who support these soldiers.

@Caitlin Bishop as a fellow East Timor (2000) UNTAET AUSBATT 6RAR member I can tell you many of us suffer and its always the families that suffer. My lids were all teenagers when i went but it only made it easier to explain why I had to go! My son welcomed me home in 2007 as he said it was the first time he had seen the me that he knew before i went. I hope that your dad is doing well and always remember under it all is still the man that went away but it takes sometimes a long time for him to come home in his head depending on what he went through there. You and your mum are the things he will help him and help ground him and if he has problems MAKE him get help I didnt get any help till 2006 and was in a very dark lonely place that only my family kept me going through now 14 years on I still have my problems but have help and also now DVA will help it only took 20 yrs. Give him my best and if you or any of your family want to contact me please do so and to anyone reading this with a similar story dont hesitate to contact me half the battle is to realize you arent in this alone and that there are many that understand because they have been there also and we are brothers always and always there for each other till the end.

Kind of strange that in a video called "debt of honor". Still the HOW's and the WHY's are still left out of the equation. How many here know, or even recognize. The Japanese never had any intention of invading East Timor! It was never part of their original plans! This most important detail should be CRYSTAL CLEAR from the start. I bet it truly catch most "propaganda filled people" with a sense of surprise. If you guys understood the history behind it. Would know that Portugal was neutral on the WWII. And had no major issues with the Japanese. Other then the ones British, Australian and Dutch created! By effectively "invading" East Timor to cover your own fears. Deployed all this mess and consecutively left a trail of tens of thousands of people who payed the ultimate price. Most of them where innocent civilian's. Not a great consolation but at least there's the recognition that Australia abandoned everybody after creating the mess. :-( On the other hand. Damn Australia did run really fast when it "smelled" oil & gas in East Timor. :-( Portugal has it's own faults. With, the now obviously stupid, "ideals" of independence and self determination. For which Indonesia and Australia took full advantage and once more the Timorese payed the ultimate price. Very, very sad. :-( I remind that Portugal gave independence and the chance for self determination to ALL Portuguese colonies, no strings attached, no if's, no but's. That independence and freedom was "by the people and for the PEOPLE". Words that some of the unscrupulous actors of this tragedy might recognize. From a distant and forgotten moral past. It was not for foreign powers to take advantage and slaughter according to wish or convenience. Quite honestly, shame on you Australia and the already "traditional" USA, that was also knee deep in the mud. :-(

MAMA SUME
@ludvanbarbosix5 жыл бұрын

Why spend millions on memorials and not teach it in schools?
@timmillsom44575 жыл бұрын
@Algy 779 007 he didn't say that there weren't any memorials but the issue about visiting memorials is the fact that going to Canberra or Melbourne can be expensive and so is finding the time to travel. As for the violence, what's the issue? War is violent and we should not shy from that, who cares if theres a Japanese/German/Italian in the classroom it doesn't matter because they're in an Australian school and as such are Australian citizens. In all honesty I concur with oldmate as the world war 1 and 2 units I did at school did not cover much at all and really didn't do the wars justice. For world war 1 we just covered Franz Ferdidand and Gallipoli (both important events but well known events) and in World War 2 it was just Kokoda and The treaty of Versailles. There is also no units on the Boer War, Korea, Malaya, not much about Vietnam and nothing about Timor, Afghanistan and Iraq. These stories deserve to be taught in schools as it allows us to properly pay respects to our diggers past and present.

Initially the UN didnt want to go in, Australia decided to go in any way and by the time they had arrived the UN said they will also go in. So this became 2 operations in one. The Australian one, which was basically an action to kick the Indonesians out and the UN action - primarily , as they do, as a police exercise.

When I was 17 I joined the Australian Regular Army. I only regret that I didn't stay in and make a career of it. Two things I would do differently if I could turn back time; * I would enlist as an officer rather than a grunt. The opportunities for advancement are better for an officer. * I would have been a career soldier. At the time I was just looking for camaraderie and adventure (found both) and would have been happy to remain a grunt forever provided the first was fulfilled. But what I didn't take advantage of was the wonderful education system the military offers to those who want to do the work. To a young person who wants an interesting adventurous life I say, "Join the services."

Where was the debt in 1975 when Indonesia invaded? Where was the debt during the 24 year occupation as Australia aided Indonesias occupation, recognised its sovereignty, did dirty deals for the oil and gas off its coast? Where was the debt when we spied on government officials during the negotiations with the newly independent government over continued control over that oil and gas? Where was the debt as we robbed an impoverished destitute people blind of the one resource they had that could alleviate their poverty?

In WWII, the Australians were not the only allied force on Timur, and they were evacuated after 1 year. Feb, 1943. While some Timorese helped the Australians, so did the Portuguese. Some of the EastTimurese helped the Japanese fight the Australians. The Japanese killed 40 thousand East Timorese, because after the Australians were evacuated the Timorese continued fighting them. These people practiced head hunting until 1945!

there were exactly 150 Portuguese Garrison Troop in East Timor. Ironically, The Sparrow Force from Australia was initially to occupy Kupang, which was under Allied/Netherlands administration, and not the Portuguese Timor. Japanese decided to invade the originally NEUTRAL Portuguese East Timor because Allied forces decided to stationed their troop there. Please read Battle Of Timor in Wikipedia en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Timor?wprov=sfla1

@@pactumexcello9308 - That's correct when the "allies" invaded East Timor Portuguese was put in an unbearable situation. The "officials" like the governor, entitled himself as prisoner. Other wise would put in danger the neutrality. At the same time local Timorese and Portuguese helped the Australians "unofficially". From the 150 men Portuguese garrison 75 (50%) never saw the end of the war and tens of thousands others, mostly civilian went to history as corpses. :-(

I was there with an Australian infantry battalion in 1999 and once we moved up to the border with West Timor and started patrolling the mountains there were many villages unaware that Indonesia had even occupied the country. Lovely people though. On a strange aside, prior to patroling these villages using night vision equipment i never knew that cattle grazed around the clock. Also, a village full of sleeping people has an oddly strange number of vocal dogs who couldn't care less about white skin and machine guns. The more you know!
