It is 10 years since Davie, Canada’s only large-scale shipbuilder, was acquired by the Inocea Group.
Since then, Davie’s historical position as Canada’s premier shipbuilder has been strengthened. Today, Davie is a strategic asset whose work is integral to Canada’s economic and national security. It is also a global player in the construction and conversion of specialized, mission-critical vessels.
Beginning in 2011, an insolvent and dormant Davie was reeling from its exclusion from the first round of the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS).
Major foreign direct investment from Europe and the US has since created a globally competitive shipbuilder and an accompanying surge in economic activity.
Indeed, in the past decade over $1B in private capital has been spent and invested to support Davie’s delivery of a roster of large, complex and pioneering ships. In that time, Davie has created almost $3B of economic impact and sustain an annual average of over 2,000 jobs in Québec and across Canada, while being the only Canadian shipbuilder to deliver large cutting-edge ships for domestic and international markets.
Highlights include delivering Canada’s largest single export in 2014 - a 130 meter Subsea Construction Vessel. It was also the most complex commercial vessel ever built in North America. This led to Davie being voted North American Shipyard of the Year in 2015. Another first for Canada.
Later, Davie delivered the first two LNG-powered ferries ever built in North America, leading the way in green technologies and setting a new standard in Canadian shipbuilding.
In 2018, the largest naval vessel ever to be delivered from a Canadian shipbuilder was launched by Davie. The Combat Support Ship, Asterix, has since flawlessly served the Royal Canadian Navy, and our global allies, throughout the world.
Today, Davie is contracted for at least the next decade to refit and upgrade the Canadian Patrol Frigates. This will extend the useful life of Canada’s primary surface combatant fleet, of which several were originally built at Davie.
Davie is also completing major conversions of three commercial icebreakers for the Canadian Coast Guard. These three ships will serve Canada until Davie, the National Icebreaker Centre, builds Canada’s future icebreaker fleet as a strategic partner under the NSS.
As Davie builds these icebreakers, and a new breed of green passenger vessels for Canada, over the next two decades, it will execute a vision to create a sustainable, exportable product at what is fast becoming a global centre of excellence.
