I'm one of the incredibly small minority of DV victims whose abuser was actually brought to court. In the end, he only got 9 months in custody, and that was actually mainly for the stalking and harassment after we broke up. The judge said he'd never seen such a sheer volume of harassment, or vile content. Only 6 weeks of the sentence was for physical abuse, despite multiple messages of him admitting to it, and even saying how much he enjoyed it. Even so, I'm beyond grateful for the incredible police woman who handled my case with so much care and dignity, and at time righteous anger towards his entitled behaviour like i was a possession. Luckiky in the UK, his sentence also means that he has to disclose his criminal record to any new person he gets into a relationship with, so hopefully he can never hurt anyone else. My therapist told me that in over 20 years as a trauma therapist, im her first DV client that received any kind of justice. This is such a real issue in the world, and books like this have a moral responsibility to contribute towards helping the problem, rather than encouraging the millions of women who never speak up and so dont receive any justice at all

I was actually really disturbed by Colleen's dedication to her dad at the beginning of the book: "To my father, who tried his very best not to be his worst." Which to me reads as "To my father, who tried his best not to be abusive." It aligns with the sympathetic attitude towards Ryle in the book. I feel like she wrote it that way to sound poetic, but to me it's just so irresponsible... I feel like Colleen both intentionally AND unintentionally romanticizes abuse with how irresponsibly she deals with the topic - as you said Hannah, just very little nuance. Read a few chapters and gave up on it, my first DNF of the year.

Ok, DV survivor here. My father was the one doing the physical violence part of the DV and my mother was the one doing more of the psychological/emotional abuse part of it. It does happen all too often (sadly) that these kinds of ppl don't get the retribution they should get. They're not held accountable. And, yet, I would've much prefered (like you) to have Ryle be held accountable. It would've shown to ppl suffering through DV that it's possible. It would give them more hope and strength to finally get out of their situations. The way the movie ended, left me with a "oh, awesome, now victims won't get out or won't try to hold their abusers accountable because they'll think "what's the point, if nothing is going to happen anyways". And regarding Lily not filing for full custody, I think the single worst thing that I've ever heard my mother say was when I asked her "Why didn't you get me out of this house when I was little? You knew how he was, he hurt you before, and he hurt grandma repeatedly. Why allow me to have such an awful life?", and she answered (with a leveled voice, thinking she had all the reason in the world and that it was obvious) "Well, because he wasn't hurting me and didn't do anything to me ever again... Why would I leave? I wasn't in any danger." I know this is a real conversation and the book/movie is fiction, but it would be the same thing Lily's daughter would probably come to conclude in the future. Just because your abuser stopped abusing you, doesn't mean he won't abuse again. Get the ones you love away from them and make sure they get retribution/be held accountable. P.S.: Yes, like I said, my mother is also an abuser (the perfect couple they are...ha. ha.) and both of them have narcissistic personality disorder (undiagnosed, but they do according do my psychologist). So, to my mother, if she isn't suffering, it's all good, because she's the only one that matters. And to my father, if those around him are obeying him and bowing to him, that's all that matters. Too bad they decided to have a kid (which they shouldn't, some ppl shouldn't have the right to have one) and I was born, someone with a strong personality and take no shit attitude. Serves them right. (Yes, before anyone who reads this gets worried, I'm trying to get out of this situation. I'm saving money to move out and I do therapy)

honestly, can't blame Justin Baldoni for choosing this book. I hate it, it's bad, but so many people are reading it, it's viral, so it makes sense to choose it to talk about DV, because it is the most popular book on this subject in the last years.
@nuuranal89893 ай бұрын
thats the probem with the current art/entertainment scene. we should stop churning out things because they're "popular", rather make them because it has HEART, SUBSTANCE and AUTHENTICITY which is where quality derives from. Tired of dollar signs being the driver of art.

The way Ryle is portrayed in the book, like you said, is very dangerous. I saw proof of that when I saw comments from young girls on a It Ends With Us video where they were saying they wished he had had a redemption arc because they loved him so much and he deserved to be forgiven and a second chance. Like, so many comments saying things along these lines. Because this book romantacized his character.

As someone that grew up with an DV household and now as someone that works with the DV survivor population as a therapist is quite “normal” for abusers to keep custody of their kids. It boils my blood that the system allows that. Someone that abuses an animal gets more jail time than a DV abuser.

THANK YOU!! i am so confused about why everyone is losing their minds over this man saying he wants to "tell a story through the female gaze" as if he wasn't literally in control of it all 😭 plus everything he's been talking about with how we shouldn't ask why women stay but instead why men harm, meanwhile he chose iewu as his source material, which is arguably the worst book to pick if you want that kind of conversation because the accountability he keeps talking about is non-existent there. the whole drama is just weird but mostly i'm just convinced the internet needs at least one woman to hate on at all times + the fact that he hired JD's lawyer told me all i need to know about him lmao

Her camp has made no other allegations. That’s it.

On the whole alleged drama about the marketing and promotion of the movie, I feel like a lot of people criticising it may have missed the tonal dissonance that IHWU was already in. Like the book tackles a serious subject with the emotional intelligence of a 14 year old discovering fanfic for the first time. And lest we forget the infamous colouring book incident. So yes, the marketing of the movie is a problem, but given the product, I don’t know why people are surprised.

Colleen Hoover was the one who asked Justin to be Ryle, he did not cast himself. And yes, maybe he was wrong when he said he wanted a female perspective and then made himself the director, but we should not be against him knowing now that his version is actually the one who makes more justice to the theme of the plot (and unfortunately we'll never see it)

you have a lot of really great points! I would also add in complaining about the movie that one of the most important parts of the book was the conversation lily had with her mom about her dad’s violence and in the movie they totally glossed over the moment and it was like 5 seconds long. Literally every single person who responded, at least 10 of my friends, was shocked that this movie was about domestic violence. This was very interesting and very important discussion! Haven't read/watched these book and movie, not going to, but I guess it might be a lot better if at least the main character was trying to hold him accountable and was met unfair court system, judge who was on the abuser side, some nasty people victimblaming her to demonstrate the real problem our society has with DM and the unfairness of it, and having not the system, but life itself who punish him. Or something similar. I was thinking about Nabokov somehow and his book "The laughter in the dark", where the very successful wealthy man was punished badly later in the story because he cheated on his wife with a minor. Although it's a different topic, I liked how here the main character was held accountable for his actions.

Thank you for mentioning the misogyny surrounding the celebrity gossip from this film. I’m all about holding accountable the people who are horribly marketing this film (which includes Blake Lively), that talks about such a serious topic. But at some point it just felt so out of proportion. Why is only Blake Lively being held accountable as if no one else has ever worked in this movie? I know she is one of the main producers and is part of all the decision making that has to do with the movie, but it’s the fact that it’s not enough saying that she’s doing things wrong (again, with a team that no one cares to talk about): she has to be the meanest bitch on the internet and people have to tear her down to pieces. She’s getting woman’d and the lack of facts surrounding all the drama proves it: it’s not about what has happened, it’s about hating a woman
