@reactivereplays5666 Жыл бұрын
A full analysis on the music video for Pt. 1: The kidnapped individual was a 'defendant' in a 'trial' with the psychotic Ren accusing him and acting as Judge/Jury/Executioner. Ren's character, through the song, goes on to explain the individual's crime: being part of a money game - a twisted game where people are divided and suffering for the sake of wealth. People who are willing to exploit their peers get ahead, and other are forced to do bad things for survival. Each time he gets close to exacting punishment and killing his victim, he stops to continue explaining more ways we twist our lives for that wealth. He even symbolically draws eyes on the head sack to signify that the victim isn't blind to it: the captor has 'opened his eyes'. He has no excuse and deserves this punishment of death. Finally, with one final attempt to do the deed, Ren's character realized the futility of what he's doing. Looking in the mirror, as per the lyrics, he is also part of the money game. And so, he puts aside his holier attitude and burns himself to death instead. As he said, as assuredly as the whole world turns while playing this game, the whole world burns as well.

@sarahcp6117 Жыл бұрын
@@janedoe2379 I think I agree with this analysis more. I always saw this video as portraying the modern citizen/consumer (the hooded man) and the capitalist as Ren's character. He keeps taking steps to kill the consumer but he NEEDS the consumer. He eventually draws eyes on the hood and, for the first time, he can see what is happening and the danger coming for him and responds by holding up the guitar to protect himself. The capitalist is *seen* and realizes he now has to deal with an aware captive and turns away. Then Ren takes off the torture gear and self-immolates (a common form of protest against corrupt government).

Also the hooded figure in a chair with the guitar and Ren pointing a finger to his head. Think the imagery is a reference to "This is America" by Childish Gambino.

I luv the way Ren takes all his nerd knowledge and uses it to inspire him and us. Apparently the video was predominantly based on the torture scene in Reservoir Dogs... You might guess he was a Tarantino fan. Ultra violence plays a big part in a lot of his art. I also got 'Clockwork Orange/The Warriors' vibes when he dragged the baseball bat along the fence, taunting his hostage with the sound. I took the ending to Part 1 to be his realisation that he was pointing the finger and blaming the very people he was judging for being ignorant. I think he's posing the question, 'What is the alternative if the system corrupts everything it touches? Even those who despise the system?'. Finding an alternative could take their profits, repurpose that power and reshape our world. But would that start the cycle all over again? I may be overthinking this but hell, Ren can make you curious and get you to look behind the curtain. Taking responsibility for your own actions and living with the consequences is one of the hardest things I've had to learn in this life. Trying to stay curious, learning how to confront my fears and accepting who we are. I know, easier said than done... But I'm engaged for the first time, in a very long time.
@sunshynff Жыл бұрын
I gotta wonder too, if that final scene didn't have a couple influences, google Thich Quang Duc, or maybe you're familiar with Rage Against The Machine's cover of their debut album. Yeah, check the back story, and no, that's not photoshopped, that is a real Buddhist Monk practicing the an art of protest called self immolation, and after that photo became the first viral photo ever (so some say) "the burning monk" became an international symbol of anti-authoritarian protest. Just throwing that theory out there.

The old building in the sea is the old Brighton Pier. It caught fire once, then it was rebuilt/rejuvenated only for it to catch fire a second time and be beyond saving because the walkway collapsed. I think (please correct me, I'm just going off memory... and old memory at that) both times, the investigation into the fires came to a similar conclusion; fire damage was too severe to find the cause. Though many think arson was involved. They left the old remains there. A building was erected as a kind of memorial if you will. The building was conceived as a "vertical pier". Just a big tower with a viewing room that is also an elevator. You get in at the bottom and it raises you up to get a view. Most people would have preferred a pier... again, I think that's the case anyway.

Yes I had the same thoughts about Ren's constant references to past songs within his songs and he most definitely leaves clues or Easter eggs within his work. As Frank zappa coined the phrase conceptual continuity, I see the same approach within Ren's work that somehow there is a connected thread between all his songs that make up his body of work. It's a good analogy to say Ren is like the Riddler. I always get the feeling he is leaving clues that I haven't worked out yet. Its like there are clues to who he is also and what makes him tick. Very fascinating guy.

1833 - 1892 From seashells to the world of oil In 1833, Marcus Samuel decided to expand his London business. He already sold antiques but decided to try selling oriental seashells as well, capitalising on their popularity in the interior design industry at that time. The demand was so great that he began importing the shells from the Far East, laying the foundations for an import-export business that would ultimately become one of the world’s leading energy companies. When Marcus Samuel senior died in 1870 he passed the business on to his two sons, Marcus junior and Samuel, who began to expand it. In the 1880s they became particularly interested in the oil exporting business but shipping still posed a problem as oil was carried in barrels which could leak and took up a lot of space. To solve the problem, they commissioned a fleet of steamers to carry oil in bulk, including the Murex which, in 1892, became the first oil tanker to pass through the Suez Canal.

I interpret Ren's video like this, the character Ren plays is the system, and the person covered up and blinded is a hostage, just like we the people are to our system, or government. The last part is in my opinion a tribute to a Vietnamese monk that burned himself alive as a stand against his government. Ren is saying that we need to take a stand and fight back against the system. Since his character represents the system, I think when the system "looked in a mirror" or basically reflected on itself, it had to burn itself down.

Hi Guys. Great reaction, as always. Honest and authentic. REN helps us all think with his music. I’d like to point out something that struck me about the visuals of money game part one. This is Reservoir Dogs! Particularly the infamous scene where Mr Blonde tortures the cop. Blonde runs up the radio and dances around to “stuck in the middle with you”. In the middle! A line in the lyric. Blonde draws a straight razor from his boot, whilst REN picks up a baseball bat. REN obscures his victim and draws eyes on his hooded face. Blonde obscures his victims and cuts off his ear. Visually huge parallels. It’s more than a nod to the film and that scene. Reservoir Dogs IS all about the money game. Pure greed at any cost. The love of money tending to corrupt them all. REN, in a bare stripped down way, compares and contrasts how we westerners dehumanise immigrants and people we regard as “other”. Freedom of speech is not freedom to spit hate. We are all immigrants,or descended from immigrants. Pitting one group of people against another helps keep the elite wealthy and in power. The final silent segment, powerfully drawn, evokes in me, the Buddhist monks that self immolated during the Vietnam war. People willing to die publicly,in one the most horrible ways imaginable to protest the South Vietnamese government’s persecution of the Buddhist peoples. Powerful and moving song and video by REN yet again. Keep turning this great reaction vids Guys. Peace

@ROMANSv1212 Жыл бұрын
The way I see the first video works on a few levels. The first is that the man in the chair playing guitar represents the artist tied to a record contract and his artistic freedom is being restricted by corporate interest and decision making. He is literally being tortured and his soul is being destroyed by being part of the money game. Another level is that the person in the chair was the aggressor, the one that had all the power and was benefitting from the money game (again could be the music industry) but now Ren is in charge and he has the power. He wants to hurt this person very badly and he is literally forcing the one in the chair to play to Ren's tune. Ultimately though Ren cannot bring himself to harm this guy anymore and realises he too is part of the money and so through this realisation he thinks it best to sacrifice himself. I also think that the fire is symbolic of purification and this imagery seems almost religious. I'm aware he has used fire as a metaphor in the past. Like in Hi Ren when he shouts "I've been in the flames that cremated my brain and I didn't once flinch or shake." I know he is a Christian and this almost messianic feeling seems to permeate through his work - that Jesus died for our sins. Maybe the act of self immolation is the ultimate act of accepting responsibility and a statement that he no longer wants to be a part of that money game. Or is there a wider meaning to it I don't know? I really down know what the drawn on eyes represents?

The origin of the Shell Petroleum name can be traced back to the seashells that Marcus Samuel senior imported from the Far East during the late 19th Century. When his sons Marcus junior and Samuel were looking for a name for the kerosene that they were exporting to Asia, they chose Shell. Also DeBeers did the lock em up make like there is a scarcity for Diamonds. DeBeers, founded by Cecil Rhodes in 1870, has been a highly successful and effective controller of the diamond market, having developed a unique purchasing and marketing cartel that has influenced prices in the market virtually undisturbed for almost a century. But the biggest trick they pulled was creating the concept of a Diamond engagement ring. Funny thing, multiple times a girl might get engaged before getting married & 2nd hand used market is crap as most end up thrown in a lake. Diamonds have an actual low intrinsic value not like gold or silver, they devalue by 50% immediately after retail purchase. Prior to DeBeers engagement ring "A Diamond Is Forever" campaign in 1948 only 10% of engagement rings had a Diamond now it's in the high 90's. Let's not talk about chocolate at Easter or Xmas presents

You guys have some interesting thoughts about the Money Game lyrics, and video imagery. Here's another perspective. For the live video with the fellow in the hood, Ren was the person in power. He was acting as the bully to the downtrodden and "captured" persecuted fellow. Notice how he tortured the poor hooded (and faceless at first. Subtle) figure constantly. He threatened him with the bat. He tied a rope around his neck preparing to hang him. Forced him to play guitar and follow his instructions. He put his hands forcibly on the figure's head against the person's will. He threatened lighting him on fire. In the end however, It was Ren who chose to break that pattern from history by lighting himself on fire. I'm not convinced that his message in that video was really focused on the petroleum industry. It was, for me, more about the bullying aspect of the class system, and he finally realized that he was the problem, and decided to fix it. That's my perspective. Regardless of the meaning, the video is intense with the terrifying imagery of the hooded man in the noose. Since the video was done three years before Hi Ren, I highly doubt there are any preplanned similarities between the noose he speaks on in that song.
