I love your vision to perpetuate and develop the cream of architectural design. Even the Apollo 11 engineers didn’t keep the plans for the Saturn V rockets and today’s experts say they wouldn’t know how to make it again. The proportion and style of Vasyl’s French carving is so perfect that in my mind it reflects the hand of God, just like the Golden Ratio. He should always have an apprentice with him.

It's fun to watch someone (you) to be so excited about a level of skill that will allow you to provide your customers so much more of a beautiful carved finish. I saw some wonderful Craftsman in the Philippines doing furniture carvings by hand. They were whipping them out fast, so the fine finish wasn't there, but I wonder what they would be able to achieve if they weren't being told to work so fast. Thanks for sharing.

So true! Speed is a sign of a skilled craftsman, but sloppy is a sign of being worked too fast. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Brent. I just watched a video from The Finish Carpentry TV KZbin channel that featured you discussing Georgian trim detail in a 1928 home and from that video, I found your channel. Thanks for the amazing content you have here. I am anxious to carve out time and look over all you have to offer on your channel. And I subscribed! (Forgive the carve pun)

Hello there, I am new to your channel & am absolutely loving the content! I am also a new home owner and was wondering if you have any book recommendations for adding carvings, moldings, and architectural detail to modern (my house was built in 1980, colonial) builds to make them look and feel less cookie cutter?
@BrentHull
@BrentHull Ай бұрын
Well, I would be looking for good historic precedent. If you look at great colonial revival rooms, you quickly realize that carving was relegated to key areas. Only the finest homes used carving. Thus, you want to use it in just a few areas. My book Traditional American rooms shows examples from the Winterthur Museum. Good luck

How do the carvings attach to the panel? Are they not carved into the panel or are they separate pieces?
@BrentHull
@BrentHull 2 жыл бұрын
That particular piece is laid on because these panels were already built. Otherwise it varies from piece to piece. Thanks

PRESERVATION! I guess it takes a special kind of personality or point of view to take "the road less traveled". Like "The geography of nowhere" says, the world seems to be getting more generic and average and cookie cutter. I hope that Charles can continue to promote canonical design now that he is King. It seems that it is hard to preserve the old wisdom amidst the hustle bustle.

The full French carvings are obviously very beautiful and impressive, but installing them in one's home in the USA is seen as pretentious because 1) you're not royalty and 2) it's really not even our culture. I think some exceptions would be if they were installed in a historic restaurant or hotel where they can be enjoyed by many. The key to bringing this back is to develop new styles instead of copying the French, or to use a lot less ornament. I have lots of moldings in my home, but the only carved ornament is on my fireplace mantel.

Im sorry but your research into English carving is way off, please look up Grinling Gibbons and his historical works throughout England. Also I take lessons from Alexander Grabovetskiy. You can find his work online as well as Mary May
