I live in Colorado and my yard is a wonderland of pine, juniper, Montmorency/Nanking/Chokecherries and wild lettuce. Somehow I've missed the wild onion and just pulled some today to check it out. I found you while searching YT for this info and am so happy I have the real deal.

You forgot to mention the easiest way to identify - by smell. The death Camas do not smell like onions, whereas the wild onions do.

@@TheLindsey7777 No one says if it have different taste than onion. how does it smell/taste??? Small quantity won't kill, especially if you don't eat but just taste. But if they are delicious - it's very dangerous to mess with. Usually poison plants aren't delicious. Usually.

I harvested a bunch of what I thought were garlic chives today. Upon realizing they had bulbs, I looked up wild onions to see if that's what I'd found. Then panicked when I learned about death camas. Glad I was able to find this so I knew I did in fact have wild onions.

I love finding your videos. Please keep it up as people are trying to self learn about edibles more and more. I stay far away from death camas but also note that wild onion has an onion odor very noticable if you crush a leaf. I would like to have seen the bulb comparisons if you get a chance. Thank you again for your good work.

Another example of edible planet that has a deadly poisonous lookalike is the Queen Anne's Lace (the wild carrot). The poisonous lookalike is the Poison Hemlock. The poison hemlock, however, has at least one highly distinguishing characteristic: the purple bruise-like spots on the stem. The Queen Anne's Lace doesn't have these purple spots on its stem.
@somethingseriouslyserious420
@somethingseriouslyserious420 Жыл бұрын
Queen Anne also has hairs on the stalk, while poison hemlock has a smooth stem(remember the saying “the queen has hairy legs” lol). There are actually several lookalikes in that plant family. I’d look into it before eating any. A general rule of thumb for the carrot family : stay away from smooth stalks, and purple bruises(though a hairy stalk doesn’t automatically mean that it is safe)
@somethingseriouslyserious420
@somethingseriouslyserious420 Жыл бұрын
I’d look into at least “sweet cicely”, “yarrow”, “queen Anne’s lace”, “poison hemlock”, and “poison/fools parsley”, as these can all be mistaken for each other(the first 3 are edible(but don’t eat Queen Anne’s Lace’s leaves in large quantities), and the last two aren’t).

I'm in Oklahoma aswell and I just found a huge patch growing in my front yard. They grew bulbs on them by the flowers that kind of look like tiny onions. The plant also reeks like normal onions haha. I went ahead and pulled just a couple of them and let the rest stay put and keep growing. I pulled all the litt bulbs off that were by the flowers. Are these the edible part?

Any wild garlic or wild onions that smell like garlic or onions when the leaves are crushed, torn, or damaged is safe to eat. Death Camas do not have an oniony or garlic odor.

@@rockymountainedibles3593 That's ominous... I usually like to take small test bite and probe every plant in my vicinity. If it taste bitter or bad - no way I will eat enough of it before I make sure it is indeed herb or editable. My nightmare is a plant that taste good or neutral but it is poisonous.
