Rook endgames can be really tricky and when you go into the endgame with a pawn down, you need the ultimate defensive skills to make the best of the position. It was the eighteenth round of the Satty Zhuldyz Chess Festival Blitz 2023, GM Boris Gelfand (2601) and GM Arjun Erigaisi (2737) faced each other in an exciting encounter. Watch the video to see what happened.

Arjun despite couple of good games this tournament with Gelfand and Gukesh, is going through tough times. He peaked around 2735 sometime during Dubai open last year. Now he is at 2693 in live rating. I hope its not motivation that prevents him from maximizing his potential in classical games. He should otherwise be a top 10 player. I wish @chessbaseindia would focus on what is ailing as well instead of just talking as if everything is kosher for these players. Nihal Sarin is the other player who looked India's best junior back in 2019 but is stuck at 2650-70 levels for a long time. Pragg also has been in 2600 since Jan 2020. Though he had a good Online chess in 2022 and played few tournaments well, I am not seeing him progress to next level. Gukesh is the only one committed to classical and I see him progress towards 2750 this year. Hopefully he qualifies for candidates next year.

This is far from being a DEFENSIVE MASTERCLASS, Borris could have easily won if he played accurately.

in 3:53 I've had this idea to sac the rook to d8, recapture Rxd8, Kd8, Qxd8, Bb7, Rb8...is this correct, hoping a 1k elo would comment

update: this was wrong, I'm even sorry for commenting this I'm just a 700. but my mistake was Qxd8 by black, in which he can decline the trade and choose a zwischenzug and take white's light square bishop first then white chooses to recapture or save the knight. i forgot these people were grandmaster, and each move is by far the top engine moves
