Who could imagine that there is are sand dunes in one of the coldest places on the planet. Great Sand Hills in Saskatchewan is a hidden gem. These sand dunes in the middle of the Canadian Prairies makes you feel like you have travelled to an exotic location like Sahara. The temperatures in the winter can dip as low as -40 and in summer as high as 40 degrees Celsius.
The Great Sandhills is in South Western Saskatchewan near Saskatchewan Alberta border. There is no major city in the vicinity of these Sand hills. You get a uniquely remote experience when visiting this area. There are several small towns on the way which are very well preserved and offer a window to the past.
In addition to visiting Sand Dunes, I'm also taking you to two small Prairie town, Leader and Eatonia. These towns have a lot of Character and are worth visiting.
South Western Saskatchewan is resource rich with large reserves of oil. The economy is heavily dependent on oil and agriculture.

Took the family there some 30 years ago. Very cool. There's an even larger one that I was lucky enough to visit up in northern Sask called Athabasca Sand Dunes while on a visit to Uranium City.

Yes, Athabasca Sand Dunes are very hard to access and very remote but I can imagine they'd be amazing.

Not really. It's a very small area that has sand dunes.

Is it a coincidence? .... The other Sand Hills, on lake Athabasca, is on about same longitude
@NasKhan
@NasKhan 6 ай бұрын
Interesting observation! I just checked on Google maps and you're correct. They appear to be on the same longitude. This might just be a coincidence though as Douglas sand dunes are on the eastern side of the province.

It's not a coincidence. They are all in the same "flow path" of the same massive glacier that created them way back.

@@Only.a.Vagabond I think the Captain who was then driving the glacier northward had a very good GPS for navigation.

Yes, but these sand hills are very tiny compared to the arabian deserts.

This geological anomaly is very interesting. The sand dunes are sitting in the middle of prairies.

I heard they have massive dunes there, can you imagine taking dune buggy around there?
@NasKhan
@NasKhan Жыл бұрын
The dunes are huge but not spread across a large area. In fact the dunes are decreasing in area and size due to erosion by wind. The area is protected due to unique wildlife and plant species and therefore no buggies or any other type of vehicle can be taken to the dunes. But of course if they allowed dunes buggies, that would have been fun.

Why would I lie? Just search Great Sand Hills, Sceptre, SK in Google maps. It's south of Kindersley, SK. And last time I checked Saskatchewan was still a part of Canada 🇨🇦.
