Excellent discussion on East Pakistan. I was 16 years old in 71, we were totally unaware in Karachi about what was going on in east Pakistan and all of sudden on 16 December the news broke out that the armed forces in east Pakistan surrendered to the Indian army. Extremely shocking days. The establishment didn't learn any lessons from the great tragedy of east Pakistan and busy in repeating the same history again. A popular political party is being sidelined to select their own tauts to rule Pakistan together. Sad days.

Interesting you were not aware at age 16. I was 9 year old and knew through radio snd newspaper almost one year before that. Bhutto was very popular and all the news were blaming Sheakh Mujib was a Ghadar, and his 6 point ( chhe nukat) would breakPakistan. I myself was a kid and believed that Mujeeb not patriotic. Then India attacked in December and then I remember Dhaka was encircled for few days, and then Pakistani military lost the war. I and my family cried. I was in Larkana Sindh

Burhan sahib good to see you( on TV though) after about 40 years. A very comprehensive discussion. I would like to add one thing. Bihari Bangali divide was created by the plunderer Ayub the field marshall without fighting even a border clash by using biharis for his political end. Biharis were scattered all over then East Pakistan. He concentrated then in Mirpur, Muhammad put area and they allways there to welcome Ayub at the Airport, his political rallies and associate of Monem Khan in activities which Bengalese despised. Lastly the Alshams was mostly comprised of them . These led to the mass atrocities on generally innocent Bihari people. Criminals were aware of the events and fled to India and later to Pakistan.

Admiral Ahsan who was governor of East Pakistan in March 71, also opposed military action ,wanted a political dialogue and on refusal by the junta resigned. I read an article by Gen Azam Khan. He writes that in 1971 people associated with Bangladesh government in exile contacted to go for a settlement on their behalf. He tried many times but could not meet Yahya Khan.
