The motto "In God we trust" did not appear on paper currency until 1957, when it was included on the one-dollar silver certificate. This timing coincided with heightened religious sentiments during the Cold War, as many Americans sought to differentiate their beliefs from the atheistic ideology of the Soviet Union. It was not part of the founding or forming of the United States nor does it refer to the univocal negotiated view of the god of christian evolving understanding of religious texts.
