Season 1 was decent but it didn't look like an HBCU at all. Season 2 is what made the show evolve into what the premise of the show is about. Debbie Allen was the right choice to direct the show. When she was around, she made the show look like an HBCU and wrote great episodes. I even liked how the writers changed whitley from being a spoiled brat in season 1 to a strong, powerful and witty person in seasons 2-6.

+Marvin Madison I didn't think she was that interesting on the Cosby show to begin with. Giving her a spin off was a dumb idea that actually sprouted a great show. I think I read somewhere that, Lisa Bonet did something publicly bad that made the network not want her to be the lead of a show that was meant to set a good example for young kids to go to college. The only character I was sad to see leave was the red head from season 1, she was quirky and so cute. I would have loved to see her and Whitney become friends who annoy each other.

I like them all. Some of my favorite iconic moments in the various intros: Season 1 - Dawnn Lewis skipping rope, and Marisa Tomei debating to fix the bikes or walk away Seasons 2-5 - Jasmine Guy stepping out of the mirror. Kadeem Hardison's head being turned by what looks like Tatiana Thumbtzen. Charnele Brown grooving to the music. Season 6 - the students that were just rocking to the song. Darryl M. Bell just dancing with different women, and then falling down from exhaustion. Cree Summer's evolution from activist, to legal counsel, to ruling judge. Lou Meyers sitting up as the fake cadaver and then moving to the music. Jada Pinkett dancing, along with the brief clip of Karen Malina White (is that Jenifer Lewis standing by her?)

I miss watching all these shows on television from back in the day and they are A different world, in living color, The parkers, family matters. These shows were like no other shows, they were the best of the best and he will not find anything like it today. 1980s through 1999 was a great era to watch television. Not today you can forget it.

There is no way I could pick my favorite version of this song. I just started watching the series with my 2 daughters. I remember being so impressed about how many issue's they tapped into. I have been looking for the scene when Kim dressed up as an African princess and talks about when she was young people thought she was Aunt Jemima. I want the part where she unravles.

My favorite show by far, and I watch the series over and over on Hulu like I've never seen it before. The changed the theme after season 1 because that's when Debbie Allen became the producer and she didn't think that theme embodied enough blackness and soul, and she was right. And I think they changed it I season 6 because it represented a new class at Hillman. Change. But whenever somebody thinks of A Different World, they think of Arethas version, and they should. Aretha's version IS A Different World.

A Different World will always be an one of a kind type show. It was one of the major points I loved about the late 80s/early 90s, this show definitely hit Different for all the right reasons back in the day.

I think all the intro's were great in that they chronicled the growing success of the show over time. It was brilliant. I like the first intro because it is very organic and has that "new kid on the block" feel to it. The scene with Dawnn Lewis playing double dutch is just brilliant in my opinion. My favorite rendition of that song is from Seasons 2 - 5 because Aretha gave her all in that version of the theme. This show was altogether just brilliant and well done.

LadycashUT, I love that you've provided these intros. Thank you. I love & appreciate this show more than words could ever express! Thanks to Phoebe, Ms. Franklin & the soulful Boyz II Men for gracing such a monumental show with such exquisite renditions. I love all versions. Each of them brought the flavor of it's decade. To me it's a tie between Ms. Franklin & Boyz II Men. Boyz II Men version captures that funky New Jack era of urban music. Now I know very well that everyone can give a thumbs down to what they don't get or like... But what's with the thumbs down?! What were they expecting -- friends or Seinfeld?! It's unnecessary IMHO! Thx. ADW FOREVER!!!!

They made the mistake of trying to make it more universal when the show was about life at an HBCU. I didn't mind Marisa Tomei's character as much as Mary Alice and the stuff that didn't seem as related to college life. Once Lisa Bonet left and they really focused on those core issues, the show got much better.

While it was a spin-off from The Cosby Show, A Different World typically addressed issues that were avoided by The Cosby Show writers (race and class relations, sexual assault, or the Equal Rights Amendment). One episode that aired in 1991, during season 4, was one of the first American network television episodes to address the epidemiology of HIV/AIDS. The original premise was to focus on a white student at a historically black university and feature Lena Horne as an acting teacher, but in production, the premise changed from being a story about a white student in a black college to a black student (Denise Huxtable) in a black college with a white friend. It was ultimately decided that Denise, who was of college age, would be spun off and have a white roommate in order to show the dynamic of a white girl in predominantly black surroundings. Meg Ryan was originally cast for this role, but she decided to pursue a film career, so Marisa Tomei was cast.[citation needed] The first season of Hillman's student body consisted of both black and white students in equal numbers, but this was changed at the beginning of the second season and a predominantly black student body maintained until the series ended. Season two changes After the first season, it came to Cosby's and the producers' attention that the series was not accurately portraying a historically black college and life on campus, so Debbie Allen, an alumna of Howard University, was hired as the chief creative force to revamp the show. During the summer of 1988, Lisa Bonet announced that she and husband Lenny Kravitz were having a baby. Allen was in favor of having a young pregnant student in the show, but Cosby said that Lisa Bonet could be pregnant but not Denise Huxtable. It was felt that viewers would not accept Denise as an unwed mother, having grown to know her as a "good girl" after four seasons of The Cosby Show. Thus it was decided that Denise would drop out of Hillman, return home to her family, and eventually travel to Africa throughout the fifth season of The Cosby Show, ensuring that viewers would not see a pregnant Denise. Allen was also in favor of keeping Tomei, as she herself recalled a white student at Howard and wanted to relate that in the show and even had possible premises for her character, such as meeting Dwayne's parents and seeing the other side of racism. However, the network rejected this storyline and the producers released Tomei from the show, and she and Marie-Alise Recasner were replaced by Cree Summer and Charnele Brown, respectively. Darryl M. Bell and Sinbad were promoted to the principal cast, and Glynn Turman and Lou Myers were added as supporting cast members. These changes led to the placement of Whitley and Dwayne at the center of a wider ensemble, dealing with more relevant issues of the day.
