It's tough to spend nearly 8 years being practically invisible while periodically reminding the public that you actually do exist. A VP must demonstrate that they are capable and independent, but not too much of either until it's their time. They should have a noble cause that neither the administration nor the public cares much about - like the environment or child labor. The most important concern for a VP is not to embarrass themselves or outshine the boss... and of course, be ready to step in at a moment's notice and literally save the world - no pressure.

I really, really liked Tim Matheson as the VP. He was terrific.

I loved John Spencer so much. Leo McGarry would back people to the hilt, but if you stepped out of line like Hoines did, you were toast. John did such an amazing job at showing both the soft and hard sides of Leo. Still miss him!

Hoynes being bitter and feeling left out makes a lot more sense once they reveal how he actually joined the ticket. At this point Leo doesn't know the whole story either, so he thinks Hoynes is a sore loser behaving like an immature kid.

To be fair though, wouldn't be the first time a VP acted that way.

Hoynes didn't disclose his alcoholism either, so he is kind of a hypocrite.
@stefsmurf
@stefsmurf Ай бұрын
@@ThiagoNascimelo In fairness to Hoynes, he hasn't had a drink in over 20 years, it's not as if he didn't have control over it, unlike Bartlet. While not fatal by itself, MS can and did in the season disable the president for over 24 hours right before an important event (SOTU). And until Hoynes was the nominee, there was no reason to disclose such issues about himself. (There are murky waters regarding how much the VP discloses. Usually, it has been the same as the president, but honestly, other than a true clean bill of health, not sure more disclosure is in most candidates best interests. (google Thomas Eagleton for why not)) Hell, just in 2008, McCain refused to disclose his medical records outright, and Trump AS PRESIDENT barely released anything other than what a high school physical would show. Fair or not fair, there is no law that says what should be disclosed, only precedence. Hoynes kept Bartlet's secret, and was still treated as an outsider. In his hands, he held Bartlet's future, and never fumbled, and was still treated like crap for much of his 1st term. If bitterness is all that came out of it, for all his foibles, I'd say Hoynes handled himself reasonable well.

Was it because he knew about MS and Bartlett originally only planned to serve one term?

i think my only problem with the bartlet administration is their philosophy that a “small group of people can change the world”. yes that’s true but think how much easier it would be if they actually used the several qualified people who worked at the white house! exhibit a - white house council was never present exhibit b - secretary of state was almost never included. bartlet, leo and toby ran foreign policy

Moira Kelly as Mandy was just bad casting. Good actress, wrong role. However, Tim Mathewson as John Hoynes was perfect casting.

Mandy by herself was fine. I think her main problem was that her job was to constantly fret over public image, which consistently put her on the wrong end of the show's message. Essentially, she became a quasi-antagonist to the main cast.

Mandy is an arrogant, irritating, disrespectful, petulant child who actively works against her own interests and and makes herself a liability to those around her. Of all of the characters Sorkin has written I understand her, and the need for her at all, the least!

Maybe Hoynes knew that professionally he and Leo have to be at odds at times but personally they can get along.Also don't forget that Hoynes was shocked in season 3 when he found that Leo never revealed to the president that Hoynes was an alcoholic and so maybe that was a sign they were friends and people who would keep each other's secrets.
