Thank you for yet another scintillating video, its beauty heightened by the regal presence of Maj! Chapman's Homer is my all-time *Favourite* English translation of the Greek epics, so it was a pleasure to hear more about that great poet. John Keats wrote of *his* positive reaction to Chapman, which in turn fueled my curiosity. Realms of gold indeed....

Thank you! Maj really likes to make sure that I'm doing everything right! Oh yes, Chapman was very gifted, as, actually, were all these men. Fascinating Tudor chaps!

I have all three books. I'm not quite finished with "A Discovery of Witches", but I'll eventually finish it and go on to "Shadow of Night". Deborah Harkness really did her homework and she's incredibly articulate. Ferdinando Stanley, 5th Earl of Derby, was a descendant of Mary Tudor, the French Queen, and was in the line of succession for the English throne. He was also a patron of the arts. :)

I live just a few hours away from Roanoke and it's tribute to the mysterious loss of the people left there. Do you have a theory on what happened to them? I think a group of indians found them..either good or very bad things happened. Hope it was a peaceful group of american Indians.

Same, & I haven't even seen any of the shows! But I probably won't, & it's just interesting to hear what shows there are & what they're like, & fascinating to know the *real* stories. And I'm making sure I know what some of the invented bits are, so I won't get confused if I come across them presented as "fact"... But I don't think I'd get confused about the vampires!
@beth79353 жыл бұрын
Oh dear! I forgot this was about tv shows & haven't heard of this one, so I thought it was about contemporary books!! X'D "The Discoverie of Witchcraft" by Reginald Scot in 1584 was a sceptical work that James VI was NOT a fan of, & "The Wonderfull Discoverie of Witches in the Countie of Lancaster" by Thomas Potts was the opposite: a report on the 1612 Lancaster witch trials designed to appeal to James VI... & that's a TOTALLY NORMAL mistake to make :D But it's a truly splendid title, & would immediately get the attention of anyone who's heard of the Lancaster trials!

Oh gosh Maj is 😅🤣😆😂 Definitely deliberate!!! After getting such an up close and personal view of the patterns on her back, her grey colouring with black stripes and spots are similar to my cat Floss
@beth79353 жыл бұрын
@@Shane-Flanagan LOL, I dunno if you meant to reply to this particular comment cos I didn't mention lovely Maj, but she IS hilarious, & definitely a deliberate camera-bomber! She's well-named: Her Majesty is fully aware of her high rank & importance, & _will_ have it acknowleged, & is gracious enough to allow her loyal subjects to look upon their Queen & admire her beauty :D And if Floss looks a bit like Maj she must be a really beautiful kitty, but of course you know that! ...& Sir Bram Ragnar the Mouse-Slayer clearly knows I've been praising other cats, cos he's just plonked himself on my lap to demonstrate his own high rank, importance & beauty :D

Were John Dee or Edward Kelly featured in the books? I have to admit, if I were thinking of Elizabethan figures having a secret society of magi those would be the names I would have picked.

Yes, they were. Diana visited Dee and then Kelly was working for the Emperor in Bohemia.

I read this collection of books a year or two prior to the creation of the TV series. I am not able to see the TV version here in Northern Virginia. I ended up buying the first season to see it.
