That features pretty much all of the Disney films and their characters together with its own storyline, and it's only Disney proper, nothing else (no Muppets, Marvel, Star Wars or even Pixar). @@thefilmanalyzerthey’re referring to an iceberg meme. Iceberg videos are KZbin videos where people will go through all the points in the iceberg and explain what they are referring to just type “(subject) iceberg” in the search bar and you’ll probably find something. Captain Hook is actually referenced in Twisted Wonderland in their Halloween event! In their world, there is a popular children’s book series called “The Adventures of Captain Mustache” who “sails the seven seas and battles giant alligators.” A character says their dorm’s Halloween decoration theme is based on it… though they are more ghost pirates so it’s also a decent Pirates of the Caribbean reference as well. As an aside, I’m happy to see how far the series has come! I’m looking forward to the 80’s and 90’s Disney Renaissance villains since they’re all so iconic.
@j.j.hatter8444 Жыл бұрын
I am convinced that the people behind Twisted Wonderland have a MAJOR love for the Haunted Mansion, because it gets referenced various times throughout the game. Aside from the Ghost Bride, there's Ramshackle Dorm, where the MC and Grim both live. It's sort of a combo of the Haunted Mansion and the home and characters from "Lonesome Ghosts" (a bit like in Epic Mickey with Lonesome Manor). And there's also a Halloween-themed Event that comes in two parts; in the second half, the main theme VERY strongly resembles "Grim Grinning Ghosts," and the whole premise involves some of the characters trying to reach a haunted ballroom where 999 Happy Haunts are gathering for a celebration. Speaking of Events, we actually do get quite a bit of Malleus and his dorm through said Events and other things (he's actually my second favorite character in the game)...buuuut the Main Story is where most of the "meatier" things happen, and much easier to find translations for, and at least one of the Events is non-canon to begin with...so sticking to the Main Story is probably your best bet. 'XD Off that topic, I think I sort of agree with you about Jude Law as Hook. Sort of. See, I don't personally mind the new backstory, and I've actually seen a couple of Hooks that are even grimmer (take that however you will), BUT I do feel it is exemplary of much larger problem that permeates the whole film: a lot of the changes made either don't really matter, or could be seen as damaging to the source. They don't really affect the story in any meaningful way, or they go against ideas that Barrie had in his book, let alone in the original film. Hook was already a sympathetic antagonist to begin with, because even though he's a dastardly fiend, life isn't exactly great for him. Similarly, Peter - especially in the book - was already a flawed protagonist by virtue of his very existence. While making them friends-turned-enemies is an interesting new twist, it doesn't really change anything except to give Hook even more reason to hate Peter, which he didn't really need. I love Jude Law's performance, and I also think Smee and the pirate crew are fun to watch, but when even the best parts of the film show the rest of the movie's flaws...yeah, issues are bound to be about. :P

Ah yes indeed!! Also glad to see it get shared like this. I'm relatively new to the fandom myself, getting into it at the beginning of this year, but yeah, I slept on it for the longest time, though I had friends who were into it. Thought it'd be overly melodramatic, but I was won over enough to get curious and want to give it a try. And yeah, I really love the story! I personally rather like the way they used the villains-the story itself remains very original and fresh, and the characters definitely feel like their own rather than being consigned to being a mirror for their counterpart, but it still gives a lot of homage to the classics, both through the meta references and the in-lore worldbuilding. Of course, like any world built on a "descendants of multiple worlds in one" model, the world falls apart if you squint too hard maybe, but overall, I find the concept of history getting distorted over time to be pretty believable, actually. After all, don't we also idolize the powerful people of the past, without really ever knowing what kind of people they were? And yeah, I also find the approach to the characters interesting in that the "villains" really are still the protagonists-rather, they're people with problems who easily could grow up to be the villain, but instead, we're addressing the problem now. Just, through a trauma-induced superpowered-evil-side, in true anime fashion! Also, I knew nothing about the Haunted Mansion ride, so that was really cool to learn about the "Ghost Bride" being a thing! I'm loving the deep dive!

Still in the middle of the video and will have to pause to sleep, but I did want to add on to the Twisted Wonderland segments: -Epel Felmier is loosely based on the poison apple itself. He even has "Poison Apple" as a nickname, among all the other reoccurring apple stuff (his name, his family's apple farm, his apple-carving, Rook's french nickname for him). Vil's motivation to take on Epel as a project even ties back to this, as one of the goals is to create a rival for Neige in Neige's own "cute" style. -It was mentioned that Rook Hunt is based on the Huntsman. This comes out in a few ways besides his design and hunter persona. Like the other two characters based on "hero" characters instead of villains, Rook's cosmic spells are light-based rather than darkness. He's also the one who saved Neige from being poisoned and is revealed at the end of the Pomefiore arc to be a major Neige fanboy (second ever member of the Neige fanclub, going to every single event, writing letters to him, and a throwaway line from earlier in the arc about Rook carrying an album of "his life's work" is revealed to be an album of solely Neige photos). -Pomefiore is the oldest house of the school. This, coupled with the Magic Mirror, has led to some theories tying the school more closely with Snow White. While it might just be a reference to Snow White being the first Disney feature film, some theorize the Queen's castle as the basis of the school building or even that Headmaster Dire Crowley is the Queen's crow familiar that obtained human form (or, alternatively, is Maleficent's crow).

I really liked the pathos in the relationship between Law's Hook and Gaffigan's Smee. The problem is Lowery's tragic backstory for Hook belonged in a darker adaptation that Disney would never have committed to. Imagine if Hook had that backstory, gets eaten by the crocodile, and then Peter has his "I forget them after I kill them" line from the book. Would serve as an extra motivation for Wendy to GTF out of Neverland, everyone's just fodder for Peter's games.

The colors are mostly different shades of brown because “realism”, and the outfits and sets don’t feel like they have their own style aside from all the top hats. 5:25: "I bought them a new house in Germany!" A reference to the Brothers Grimm; a couple of german brothers who famously collected various fairy tales in written form, and put them together in an anthology, so that they wouldn't be forgotten. The Three Little Pigs is one of those tales. 8:30: Given how Grumpy said that the Queen is full of black magic, it's very likely that it wasn't in Snow White's imagination, but rather that the Queen put a spell in the woods for whenever there are unwanted guests going through the woods. It's very likely Grumpy said it, because he confronted one of the trees on his way back home from work he goes (heigh ho!); although it's an implication, it makes a lot more sense in context to the later scene having the Queen using alchemy to physically alter her appearance. 17:33: As someone who favors the Live-Action remake of the Jungle Book over the Animated version for having a bit of the Rudyard Kipling atmosphere, that's just straight up horse puckey! 19:12: Well here’s another change that made no sense; this time it’s in contrast with the original book. In the original story by Carlo Collodi, the Fire Eater is NOT a villain, but like the Red Queen in the “Adventures in Wonderland” series, he’s actually a reasonable guy, despite his temper. The Fox and Cat, and the Coachman, on the other hand, are the actual ones to be punished in the original story; though the only punishment the Coachman would get is offering refunds for his donkeys, as the donkeys would die early. In fact, Lampwick ended up dying near the end of the story when Pinocchio found out Lampwick had been close by. As for the Fox and Cat, after they robbed Pinocchio of the cash given by the Fire Eater, the Fox ended up crippled and the Cat went blind; Pinocchio rightfully mocked them for the karma they went through. So Disney wrongfully punished the Fire Eater and let the Fox, Cat, and Coachman run off Scott free.

I second this. While I enjoy the game, actual writing is kinda mid, even when specifically talking about the Japanese version (because the English version has a lot of issues itself like watering down Jamil's backstory, which was FAR darker in the JP version). It doesn't spend a lot of time developing the characters, plot points are promptly dropped all the time (like Jack and Vil's friendship that went absolutely nowhere), certain topics aren't treated as seriously as they should (like the whole situation with the Asims, Azul's ED, etc), baffling adaption choices (seriously why aren't Neige and Vil stepbothers?), Yuu having the personality and impact on the plot of a piece of tinfoil, the character's arcs and motives are hardly fleshed out (or even ended differently like in the case of Jamil's, who I think should've been set free; period), the worldbuilding is nonsensical and all over the place, certain arcs could've been written a fuckton better (looking at you Books 2 and 6), etc. One strong point with the game has always been the premise, because it's extremely cool. I think Twst works best as a jumping point for transformative work. If you take the premise, characters, setting and just run away with it, you could write something so much more detailed and fleshed out yourself. I think that's why I enjoy writing fics in that fandom so much. It's a fun sandbox to play in. I think the core idea of it has a lot to do with that.

The fact that this is a villain show leaves the worst thing of the Pinocchio remake - Tom Hanks’ Geppetto - off the hook, but I Shan’t Forget. Being Italian I’ve seen plenty of Pinocchio remakes (including a stage musical) and the most fun part is often seeing how they project the animalistic nature of the Cat and the Fox into live action. This often leads to creative costumes - the stage musical had the Fox as a woman, in accord to the books, and with the Italian voice of Ariel Simona Patitucci in the role she was a showstopper. That’s why the concept of “just use photorealistic cgi” makes me so sad and angry.

One of the things that frustrates me the most about these live action remakes is just how dead set they are to make everything photo realistic and dark. Like guys they’re fairy tales, yes they can be dark but there’s fairies, magical worlds, a puppet that can sing and dance and talking crickets, I’m pretty sure you can take liberties with realism. It seems to me they favour focusing on correcting bad faith criticism from the originals rather than just making their own thing like the Rodger’s and Hammerstein Cinderella or Burton’s Alice movies. Go crazy with the concepts, experiment a little. 8:13 - I also like a moment to shout out Vera Farmiga who appears a Snow White's mother and the queen, in this version, takes on Farmiga's appearance to give Snow White the poisoned apple, which, in my opinion, makes this probably one of the darkest versions of this iconic scene. And Farmiga is having a ball with it.

Thank you for bringing up Legend of the Three Caballeros with Sheldgoose and Felldrake. It's a very fun series with great songs, and it was sad to see it mishandled almost straight out the door. Sheldgoose and Felldrake where especially a highlight, both dastardly hammy but Sheldgoose more the grounded sitcom villain and Felldrake the high fantasy villain. I especially liked Sheldgoose going from being unerved by the supervillainy to embracing it as the series went along. Villains who develop into more evil villains is an underappreciated form of character development.

I'm a little weary of 'Hook being a Lost Boy' as a fanon concept as I rather like Hook's privileged roots, but I do find the idea of the Peter And Wendy film following their feud to their reconciliation, or at least mutual understanding, to be a neat direction for the concept. It leans into the idea of Neverland being a play time world where kids can have dramatic fallouts one moment and then forgive and forget in the next. It's strange that this film is apparently more dour in tone, since the plotline feels suited for a MORE whimsical retelling.

You need to make a dedicated video to just Twisted Wonderland's interpretation of these classic Disney villians it's such a good game, also the newest batch of Chapter 7's content just dropped and the KZbinr Gasmask translated these new parts of Chapter 7 with English subtitles, it's not the best translation but it's better than waiting for the content to drop on the English server.

You're view on Phantom Blot in the Ducktales Reboot is similar to mine. The backstory was okay and I liked his interactions with Pepper... But it did feel like they made a character first and then decided to make him the Phantom Blot later as a reference. The original Blot would have worked really well as a character on his own, heck could probably be a main villain for a whole season or two. Also I am glad to finally know what the heck is Twisted Wonderland... Thank you for that lol.

One thing that I think would be interesting to explore for a future catch up video are novels. There's a whole book series, A Twisted Tale, that goes into alternate paths for a lot of the movie villains, and even introducing new ones, and I think it would be interesting to cover since I don't see a lot of people who are aware of them. Of course, adding books to these retrospectives would be a very time consuming addition, so it'd be fair to not add them, but I think it's interesting to consider

Not too bad in your round up of information based on the 1937 - 1980 villains from cartoons and films, old and modern, and the mobile games where our favorite iconic villains (or characters inspired by them) appear. For the record, Mozus Trein is my favorite of the "traditional teacher" characters in Twisted Wonderland (resembles many teachers I have had in real life). It's the cat, I swear, and also the fact that he speaks highly of his two grown daughters in special dialogue you can achieve from Joint Magic Exams. Some Twisted Wonderland further information/addendums (from an expert lore diver with a steel trap memory for details); after all, it has been said that "the villain is the hero of their own story," and there are things to be learned from all characters in a story including the villains (WARNING, long and detailed paragraphs below.): The Dark Mirror is a combination of the Hogwarts Book of Admissions (determines students' candidacy based on magical ability) and the Sorting Hat (sorts new students into one of the seven dormitories, based on the nature of their souls). It does bare heavy resemblance to the mirror in the film, but with a black filigree mask painted over it. It is responsible for transporting students and staff off campus for errands, school trips and on breaks during the story. As a game mechanic, it is in the Mirror Chamber where players summon new cards and participate in card showcase events. In this chamber is also where Pomefiore bases their "trick or treat trail" exhibit during the Halloween 1 event, playing with the idea of vampires having no reflections; the fact that there are coffins floating in the room adds to the illusion. Pomefiore is Italian for "apple flower" or "apple in bloom", makes sense for a queen who wanted to be beautiful forever; to be more specific, this "popular kids/ultra rich kids" dormitory strives for Grimhilde's skills as a potion maker and to emulate her tenacity/determination to achieve her goals no matter what adversity came her way. Rook Hunt's determination and devotion to "the pursuit of true beauty in all things" go much deeper than surface level (as players find out) than just foppish French mannerisms and freely given compliments. Epel Felmier, who has been bullied and pushed around for his feminine appearance and "country bumpkin" personality since he first arrived (Vil is a major player in this treatment.), is determined to use his education to preserve and profit his hometown farming community for future generations. For the record, Vil's last name is likely a combination of the German words "schoene" (beautiful/lovely) and "heit" (the suffix -ness), which I translate as "The Height of Beauty". #VilThePaegantMom Heartslabyul is the dormitory that is most traditional looking, resembling many dormitories at schools like Eton in England; only fitting as Alice in Wonderland is an English children's book. The Queen of Hearts' spirit of strictness/bringing order to chaos (the only non-magic user among the Great 7, what?!) is what students are sent here to learn. Out of all of the 22 student characters, Yana Toboso likely modeled Riddle Rosehearts the closest to Ciel Phantomhive. Both had little to no room to "be a child" during their formative years; likely beaten/confirmed hurt if they didn't obey ALL THE RULES of a certain role they must play; and of course, both are very short for their age. Riddle's lack of height is heavily symbolic of his stunted character growth from his "tiger parent" mother. Ace, a goofball who derives pleasure from shirking work and teasing others; Deuce, a former delinquent who wants to be an honor student to make his mom proud, make himself proud; Cater, a social media mogul who was stifled in a highly feminine interest household, moving around constantly for his dad's job... might be more lonely than he (or his clones) make it seem; and Trey, the "down to earth" and reliable leader Heartslabyul needs, each have their role to play in the backwards world of this DIRECTLY WONDERLAND INSPIRED dormitory. As for Riddle's last name, the Queen of Hearts loves her Roses red, a major contention point in Chapter 1 of main story. Diasomnia likely derives from Latin, translating to "dreaming day", perfect for a curse of eternal sleep. Since Malleus' Overblot state is still very much active right now, after dreading it coming with sensing the pattern around Leona or Azul's Overblot, we need to keep a close eye on this dormitory. Modeled after Maleficent's castle in the Valley of Thorns/Briar Valley, this dormitory is "dark ages" personified, despite the students being the most welcoming and functioning most like a unit than in ANY OTHER DORM. Maleficent, the Thorn Fairy, was lauded for her mastery of many forms of magic and her regality. Malleus' grandmother is rumored to be Maleficent, albeit with slight name changes, among the player base. Silver, the narcoleptic "fairytale prince", seems like he would make more sense at a hero academy with his respectful nature. Sebek Zigvolt (close to Sobek, crocodile headed god of the Nile, and volt for "electricity") is an arrogant, fae-supremacist who will LOUDLY argue with anyone that Malleus is superior to everybody, rabid little fanboy that he is. Lilia VanRouge, leader of Malleus' guards and father figure to all three younger boys, is the shortest member of the 22 students... but his strength and extremely taxing training methods are worthy of any "shonen anime mentor" figure. Word to the wise, don't eat Lilia's cooking; you'll have no nutrition out of BLACK COAL! THANK YOU for including Madame Mim's recent appearance at the parks for the Halloween season 2022. I thought the whole booth set aside for her was great. Princess Eliza, the Ghost Bride for Twisted Wonderland, joins a long line of Haunted Mansion sister brides before her... and I have to say, I like the Phantom Manor bride better than her. Take your freezing slaps and intent to marry our resident "introverted gamer otaku" elsewhere! Divus Crewel... while I'm not a fan of the "pet play fetish" talk he utilizes when "disciplining unruly pups", I do admire the visual nods to his inspiration being obvious without being overstated (eg a pointer stick/riding crop instead of the French cigarette holder.) My favorite details about him? His love of classic cars (I wonder what his driving violations record is; Trein says he was a nasty little shit during his time as an NRC student.) and raisin butter (chosen for the resemblance to Dalmatian spots and a mature palette).

There is one good thing I can say regarding the live action reboots. With the exception of Time in Disney Infinity and maybe the some takes of the live action Maleficent, none of the live action versions of the characters are promoted in other Disney materials outside of the films. At least as far as I recall. Sure it doesn't absolve Disney for making these films, if anything outside of money it make even less sense why they're doing it in the first place. But it at least means that Disney still has SOME (not much) common sense to default to the originals.

I've always thought of OLIVER & COMPANY (1988) as Disney's big turning point. The Disney animated aesthetic changed dramatically with that film. I don't think it was the first of the animated films to depict New York City, but it was the first one to make the city...well, "look like New York" (the "modern" New York of the '70s and '80s. (It also was the first DIsney animated film to feature product placement.)
