It's a condemnation of the way people handle social media. He follows them because there's a social obligation but he's not actually interested in engaging. I have a similar thing going on with a classmate and my Instagram. I haven't accepted his follow request because I don't really use IG but he's getting kind of antsy about it. I'm like, "Dude, it's not you I'm just not on this platform anymore" and it's causing legitimate frustration. Social media is honestly pretty terrible.
