Thank you for making this video! My husband was an industrial mechainic/electrician but he had a bad stroke a few years ago so I gave all his tools to my son in law. Unfortunately, my son in law passed away suddenly four months ago and left daughter and me with so many tools to go through. It's a daunting task and I'm so thrilled I found your videos tonight! You are an amazing teacher! Your calm, teaching style immediately put me at ease. I love the way you educate people on what the tool is and how to use it without making us feel stupid. You make it look so easy that I go away from your videos thinking to myself - yes, I can do this! Thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us. I have subscribed and look forward to watching more of your videos.

The step bit is used to drill sheet metal and other up to 1/8 " when cooled with oil. To cut thin metal properly, you should start small and work your way up to the desired size hole. If you don't step up, the bit will catch on the metal resulting in a wrecked hole. Using the step bit you can drill faster without having to change out bits. Very conveinent.

I came in here to learn which bit to use in building a fence. I'm using 2x4s for the railings, held together with 1/4" hex bolts. I want to have the top of the hex bolts sink into the 2x4s so the surface will be flat, and then attach sheets of wood lattice. So it looks like I need to get a 1/4" counter-sink bit.......Thanks, Leah!

Super awesome and informative video. Is there a bit similar to the countersink but that would create a more if a flat indent (like if you wanted to put the head if a lag bolt below the surface of the wood)?. Something sort of like a mixture if the countersink bit and for forsiner bit. Thanks.

I have seen mention of a drill setup that drills square holes, like those for electrical boxes in masonary and wood. It uses someting like a rotary triangular shaped part. Was wondering if there are ones for bigger than 5 inch size for electrical, such as 8 inches, up to 12 inches or 15 inches, for furniture, cabinets, doors, etc.?

Only one thing I didn't see that I was kind of hoping for: Sometimes I need a long extension, but are there times when you should use one? And what about those 90-degree thingies? How do they work? That Christmas tree bit is really cool! I have so many different drill bit kits I've collected and should probably throw half of them away. Do you just throw them away when it get hard to drill through the wood? What does it mean when they get hot? Does that mean they're ready for the trash?

Very informative, and even though I only learned one or two things, I feel more informed. I think I will have to add a step drill in my collection. I do like to use spade bits a lot and will often turn my work over just before it breaks through and complete the hole from the other side to avoid splintering. I recently added some titanium bits to my collection and I've come to the conclusion that the main reason they coat them is because people will buy them because of their pretty gold color. I don't see much difference between them and a good twist bit.

Thanks for another great video. I like the way you make these important things simple and understandable. As with your tape measure video, I know more now about the drill bits I've used forever. I have a question for you: what is the best (or most appropriate) type of composition for a twist bit set for me to get? I'm thinking between plain steel, black oxide, titanium, cobalt, etc. My uses are primarily for home repair and building simple things, and the materials I drill through are mostly plywood, softwoods like pine and fir, metal of up to a max of maybe 3/16 of an inch, and a small variety of other materials. Also, ma'am, does it make a difference between buying a name brand and buying cheap bargain bits? Thanks again, and please keep 'em coming!

Hi Julia, you may want to try a bit for drilling glass, or one for drilling into ceramic tile. I have never drilled holes in pots before, so I can't really say which bit would work best, unfortunately.

Thanks for another interesting video. :) I thought I'd seen all the different drill bits, until I saw the one that looks like a router bit. I have a set of drill bits by Dewalt. They look like regular metal-cutting drill bits, but the tip has a smaller bit size. It's like the end of a small drill bit has been joined onto the end of a larger bit. They work really well because I often don't need to drill a pilot hole, especially if using a drill press. :-)

Well explained but it would have been nice if you could have identified the familiar bits (0.54) . My motto would be "never assume that anybody knows anything and what they think they know could be wrong". I know absolutely nothing about drill bits and I'm planning to put up a shelf this afternoon so it would be handy to know what a masonry bit looks like although I suppose any type of bit would do for drilling through a plaster wall.

Hello, I’m trying to bore a hole through a piece of cedar (about 7/8 inches thick). The hole is 1 and 1/8 inches in diameter. I have a paddle bit of that size. Every time I try to cut my hole I not only get blowout (which I could live with on this project), but the entire board splits in half! Any ideas?
@seejanedrill

I would try clamping both sides of the wood prior to drilling. And as far as the blowout is concerned, I would stop once I get halfway through, flip it and drill from the other side. I hope this helps!

Does the Forstner bit work with a standard cordless drill even though it doesn't have a hexagonal base? I asked an employee at Lowes this and he honestly couldn't answer the question; said he thought I needed a drill press for it. Is this true?

Bryan Klein You can use it in either. Some drill bits require atleast a 1/2 drill chuck though sometimes.
