Letitia Valentine and Alex Lewis came up with Surviva Jak after Letitia developed hypothermia while cycling. A jacket designed to prevent and treat hypothermia and shock, the pair seek an investment of £75,000 in return for a 30% equity stake.
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

Did Peter seriously just recommend that they randomly walk into the headquarters of some major retailer with a box of their product and demand to see their buyer? That was so unreasonable of Peter. Because if you were to randomly walk in without an appointment and without even knowing who you want to speak to they would look at you like you're insane and tell you to leave. You wouldn't get any further than the receptionist who might ask you to leave your business card (just to be nice and to get rid of you) and that would be it. Tons of people on Dragon's den say that they're struggling to get a hold of the right contacts and the dragons NEVER give them a hard time because of it. I don't understand why they were so damn rude to these two.

He said go to their head office to speak directly to them company, not the major retail branch. Peter's right, you can't just sit on the phone expecting to get results all the time. Putting some supply in the car and driving over to the office to directly set up an appointment is a good idea. The sales department might say "We have some time in the next hour, or maybe we can squeeze you in three weeks from now" so it's good to be prepared. He was admittingly harsh this episode though.

I work in a call center and I can say if a business calls, my role is to take the marketing details and just say "Thank you for your business enquiry". I doubt anything happens from there. You would need ACTUAL business contacts to get your product through the door. It's not as easy as "picking up the phone" so props to these two

This stuff isn't easy, it's not meant to be. Running a successful business is Hard, really hard which is why so few can do it.I run two, hardest thing I have ever done. So I completely get the shade. We make mistakes and learn along the way daily. Things should never be taken personally when it comes to business otherwise you will beat yourself up forever. It should also be noted that most businesses make a loss for a while and then become profit positive in year 3 or 4. It's the nature of the beast. Those with paitence and business acumen make it.

It wasn't unfair. It was the standard "good cop / bad cop" strategy. In business negotiations, people always pretend to be insulted or devalue your company like that to move you psychologically in their direction. People who watch this show don't realize the sharks feed deals to specific sharks they know would want the deal the way I described above. Negotiation is a game in the sharks mind so pretending out-numbering is common.

@@amyk9813 I’ll give a few reasons! :) 1) you hand them a paper with you’re name on it and that paper floats about awkwardly with no one knowing what to do with it. Your name therefore becomes synonymous with getting in the way or being a nuisance. 2) It gives a kind of desperate vibe, like you’re posting pictures of a missing puppy. You want to feel like you’re applying for an area you’re specialised in, not anyone who will take the time to read your cv 3) it seems conceited and arrogant, to walk into a place of business and expect them to stop and pay attention to you. Showing up in person feels like the equivalent of cutting in a line, people are waiting their turn by applying to the appropriate advert 4) everything is digital now, so handing a CV in a hard copy may look archaic and, again, cement your name as an nuisance if they don’t store hard copies Hope that helps!

@@amyk9813 I remember when I was looking for jobs a few years ago my parents demanded that I do it when I wasn't having luck elsewhere online. Most staff were just confused and said the best option is to look on the website. They handled the barrage really well considering how young and inexperienced they are. They’re cluey kids and they just need guidance. They seem like quick learners and they’ve only been in business for 4 months! She can be sometimes and other times not. In one episode Duncan tried to help an entrepreneur explain his business proposition as Deborah just wasn’t getting it, and she had a go at Duncan for stepping in and helping him. She is also trying to build property on land that local residents have used as a park for years, and even though the residents are desperate to keep it for their children to play in, the heartless woman is battling with them to get her way.
@HailieSelassII020

Disagreed, she only wants to help people if she believes she can make financial gain. That isn't helping people that's called business. In business theres no helping people because you love them, she offers them 45%; which is more then most bank investors would ask and she will still not even be there physically or heavily involved in the business, as its just way too small for her, she will give it to one of her men to look after. Im not saying that she doesnt add value to your business, im just saying shes not there for charity or 'to help people'

@@hughm1383 I don't think the OP was suggesting it as just a raincoat, it gets pretty cold as well if your outside in a field in the UK for days on end. I don't see why it can't have more mundane applications, many products find applications for sometimes totally unrelated problems, Super glue was originally developed for gun sights before being used as a general adhesive as well as a first aid adhesive, and Sildenafil (what we now more commonly know as viagra) was first developed for angina and hypertension (high blood pressure).

The dragons have been in the game so long, and came in at a different point in time anyway. These days it is very hard to get that first foot in the door, regardless of how persistent you are or how good your product is. In fact, a lot of companies try to make it as hard as possible for anyone to just turn up with a product, because they see it as try-hards spruiking products they are most probably not interested in, so a waste of their time. Most of the value in a dragon is not their money - that could be sourced through a bank loan - but their contacts and expertise.

Sometimes I wonder if the dragons see a great idea and rubbish it so that they can produce their own, given that they have got all the experience, distribution networks, contacts etc. already. Or that a potential product might threaten their own businesses or investments as far as their personal profit grab goes. The one where the "contestants" had an idea for bottled water that aimed at reducing plastic waste was a classic. This is a great idea that I'm surprised no-one in the room thought could be manufactured for the world wide market; mountaineers, trampers, campers, first aid kits, schools (field trips) etc. Not just Britain's "ramblers", whoever they might be. No excuse for the dragon's to be so hostile and rude either! As if they randomly approached them for their money in a social setting outside of the context of the show or something.

The problem is that they knew that Deborah was very likely to back out because she really wasnt sure. Starswept_Dusk if that was really their mindset(she might back out) then they would have just accepted it from the start. she was setting them up to feel like it was the only option(which it was - in the den) and she could see how desperate they looked. They should have come back with a 3rd each, equal partners, we’re in it together blah blah. That would have served them better. At the very least she would have come down to 40. But their approach was literally sheer desperation, there was absolutely no need for Deborah to accept it.
