A Drive To Mufakose in Harare, Zimbabwe

My munin'ina , umnawami, my young sister took me on a drive to Mufakose, the town that I grew up in. We passed through the famous Mbare township. It was good to see my home town, but the decay was so visible and painful to see. The roads were especially rugged and the refuse uncollected. I was so excited to see my high school and elementary school, the places that shaped who I am. Here is to getting to know my hood

Yeees!! It's Mupani, shem I couldn't remember😂The schools looked good on the outside. I was out there on a public holiday so I could not get in. Hope I can visit inside one day

That's my hood too, the same street but a few houses down the road opposite the OK Supermarket bus stop. I attended the same schools you mention and the same high school teachers you mention Miss Mpandare, Mr Mhasvi, Mai Chiposi, Nhandare , the Geo teacher, vana Gweshe, Musukutwa etc.

I went to Mukakose High School 1978 - 1981. It feels like another lifetime! Used to commute from DZ as there was no secondary school in DZ at that time.

The piles of garbage by the roadside in Mbare triggered mysophobia in me, my skin literally started crawling. In as much as things are tough for most Zimbabweans and poverty I'd real, there's no excuse for the high tolerance levels we harbour for untidiness and filth. I can't, for the life of me, understand why vanhu vatema tichiita huchapa huri extreme like this. Totally unacceptable. On another note, Gogo vaKaya, your Bulawayo house makeover is LOVELY!!!! Well done, you turned the golden oldie into such a homely and tastily put-together sanctuary. Fantastic job.

Perhaps for a future episode (just a suggestion) you could interview someone in the private waste management or recycling sector to discuss the challenges some communities are facing managing their waste. It might help a Zimbo in the diaspora or at home to formulate a community-based solution to start tackling the waste issue.

That shopping centre at OK was my play ground and I had relatives close to Tendayi primary school. I’m saddened by the rubbish dumping next to OK there,how did it even start ??? The audacity of throwing rubbish in such an open area like that heh? I was born at the clinic in 1984,went to area A crèche then Makundano primary school. Mufakose is home to me always, but the state of the location brings so much sadness to the heart. You are definitely homegirl, I am glad I gave you but just a glimpse of home. I am thinking of how best I can give back to the community that raised me and one of my biggest desires is to bring cleanliness to the common areas, ipapo pa bus stop iya yepa na Musasa is the start.

@@KayasGogo I remember way back then when we had ana 'mbuya hutsanana" who used to promote cleanliness and hygiene. They need to come back. And I also think teaching the kids right from ECD so they never grow up to be litter bugs. You're right , the community can't wait all the time to have some things fixed by an external body. We need to mobilise ourselves.

Yea, true there’s countless things a community can do with their streets, parks, libraries, neighbourhoods & public places etc albeit with a functioning municipality or local government !? Coincidentally, in 79/80 when you was Head girl at Mfakose High School , I’d just enrolled at Harare High School after my boarding school in picturesque Vumba, Mutare 🇿🇼 was abruptly closed at the height of liberation war. Sadly, all our teachers which comprised British, Scottish & Irish missionaries had been callously slaughtered ! The sheer brutality of this massacre shocked the world 😢!
