@kountryedge3 жыл бұрын
It still seems to be a bit to tall for him as he raises quite a bit when he uses the prosthetic leg. I'm also worried about the rubbing pressure of his leg against the hard plastic. I think to shorten it a bit more, plus add a thin rubber layer on the bottom for traction. But glad to see Waddles walking again.
@Lucas_Tulic2 жыл бұрын
The rubbing isn't an issue, as most birds don't have skin in their feet. Talons are made of keratin, just like human fingernails. The feet consist mainly of bones and tendons, with very little muscle and few blood vessels, so no worries there. The rest, like the hight, can be adjusted easily.

I agree and also maybe a more flexable material in the foot so it bends like his natural foot, as it is it is so flat
@critomian Жыл бұрын
Yes. Agreed maybe make the leg slightly lower or more flexible. I also noticed it’s not a amputed leg but rather a bent leg. So maybe the Awkwardness, therefore can rethink the attachment too. But overall super fantastic for the first try as it’s really not easy to do and easy for me to comment here.

What a lovely gift! Prosthetics can be painful to use initially, but I think this duck would adjust well. I hope they'll be monitoring him for pressure sores and improve upon the design regularly - as regular use will also change the shape of the stump within the prosthetic.

Amazing! I saw a documentary about twins conjoined at the head. They were to undergo the very long, very complicated surgery to separate them. Months before the surgery, MRI of the brains of both babies and exact replicas of both brains in the skull were printed. The team of surgeons explained that they practiced the 3-D brain replicas and this helped them so much. They didn't have to open the skulls up to find unexpected surprises; the replicas prepared them totally for brain anatomy. I also saw a video of a dolphin who had lost his tail in an accident with a boat. He was given a prosthetic tail and was able to swim once again. I see only bigger & better medical advances with 3-D printing.

Oh I'm so happy about this. Please who can I contact as we gave Domi Duck, a mangleg & can't walk. I run a charity called Who Gives A Cluck (rescue & rehome hens from egg laying industry). A lady surrended a duck to me. She is now best friends with another traumatised bit, a hen called Lily. They are both quote famous because of their unique friendship. I've been to after two vets & X-ray's that we can do nothing for Domi Duck. But what you've done here gives me so much hope. Please, who can I talk to it communicate with about this. Kind regards. Julie.

It's a great Idea, so now this is the first step to stop always putting down animals who aren't able to move properly anymore. Can we come up with a way to fix smashed up wings?
@FluePeak3 жыл бұрын
that would be hard as most of the structure is bone and to mimic that type of material with the same properties is kinda hard.
@i.i.iiii.i.i3 жыл бұрын
@@FluePeak Well, we can print ceramics and metal, which can come close enough to the weight of bones if you adapt the shape a bit. Maybe it is even possible to use plastic, also for the feathers... You don't necessarily need to create actual artificial bone the same way we don't need to print a artificial leg prosthesis out of bone (even leg bones have very complex structures). Especially when the animal is in captivity you don't need to make the prosthesis in a way that lasts a lifetime, but you can just make repairs... so it doesn't even have to come close to the resilience of the original body part. I think the bigger challenge is to create a wing in a way that it doesn't always stick out, so that the animal is limited when not flying... But that also depends on how big the missing part of the wing is ;)

Prosthetics can't be worn constantly and aren't the same as having a real leg, but they can definitely give an animal time up on their feet having an improved quality of life for parts of the week.
