Steven Pasquale's voice is just something else. He has the range of a tenor and yet, in his tone, I can also feel the warmth and depth of a baritone. Outstanding performance by two very talented actors.

@Brian-dg7qc9 ай бұрын
When I hear Steven do this, he's got the quintessential tenor timbre: nice and bright with a hint of nasality and forward sound. If you're interested in a tenor who really sounds like a baritone when performing this, I'd look into the Joshua Henry + Jessie Mueller recording of this kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5SXkGmwba-mqLM. Juxtaposing these two versions is a great way to see the effects of vaulting your vocal space. (I'm sure Steven could sound like that too if he chose to ... most any of us who have had extensive vocal training can change our timbre like that.)

@@jafrieden I'm a big fan of Kelly, like almost everyone. Saw King and I four times and Kiss Me, Kate three. I have the Lincoln Center DVD and I was also there to see it live. I thought that she was too old to play a believable Julie. Just her body language and the strength of her gaze made it hard to accept her as the poor, ignorant waif Julie Jordan. Of course if this had been a full run she would have improved in that role just as she has improved in Kiss Me, Kate. I understand the disappointment and also the fact that she felt welcomed in these (narrow-minded) environments, after what she unjustly suffered. I was in an 11th grade high school performance of Carousel back in 1966 as a part of theater arts study in an advanced placement program. I played The Storekeeper/Doc Sheldon. We staged it, cast it, lit it, costumed it and performed it in a 9' x 18' space in the classroom. One of my classmates was a talented pianist/accompanist. We put on 3 shows. Watching and hearing this brought back a flood of 57 year-old memories. I was in the midst of my first love at the time and surely was caught up in the romance between the characters. Everyone should be in Carousel. I have seen it on Broadway, a concert performance at The Hollywood Bowl and the movie, of course.

@timothysmith78884 ай бұрын
"Both are better actors and singers than the originals"?!?! Well that's disputable. Of course, the original 1945 Broadway cast, Jan Clayton (Juie Jordan) and John Raitt (BIlly Bigelow), didn't appear in the 1956 "movie version". And though Clayton and Raitt recreated this number in a TV performance for "General Foods 25th Annoversary Show: A Salute to Rodgers and Hammerstein", NINE YEARS AFTER they had originated the roles, it is important to understand how drastically different the Broadway of 1945 was from a NYC rehearsal studio 70-years later. You are comparing apples to oragnes. Start with the fact that, in 1945 Jan Clayton and John Raitt had to be heard in the last balcony of the 1645-seat Majestic Theatre, eight times a week WITHOUT ANY AMPLIFICATION or assistance from microphones of any kind. Broadway shows were entirely acoustic in 1945. Microphones wouldn't show up on Broadway Principals, much less Chorus for another TWENTY YEARS. Ms. Osnes (whose clear, clarion voice WOULD likely carry to the balcony), and Mr. Pasquale (accessible, folksy/pop/rock-star-esque, studio recording voice) are clearly scaling their performance to an iPhone, or other smart device. Would we be able to hear them in a theatre with a pit orchestra and no microphones, EIGHT TIMES PER WEEK? As to the film, with all due respect to Shirley Jones, I find it very difficut to believe that Ms. Jones' Julie Jordan is a blue-collar, laborer in 1873, working 12-14 hours per day, Mon-Fri, and six-hours on Saturday in a textile mill! Leave it to the Brits to make clear to American audiences with the 1994 Lincoln Center revival to tell us just who these milltown women and roustabout men really were. I myself, was quite pleasantly surprised by Clayton's and Raitt's relatable performances.

This is sweet yet passionate and a very human drama. And every nuance of the lyrics are magnified by Rodgers perfect melodies and harmonies. "I'd let my golden chances pass me by" Are there sadder words than these? and the last 3 words are 3 heart-breaking chords. Musical drama at its finest. This may R&H's best work.These two performers seem to really understand the dramatic nature of this work. Their beautiful voices "act" the music. Truly lovely.
