Works that in a way I am surprised were never done by composers who had the obvious talent to do so: an opera by Gustav Mahler a symphony by Maurice Ravel a piano trio by Bela Bartok a concerto for clarinet and orchestra by Johannes Brahms a concerto for organ and orchestra by J S Bach a ballet score by Antonin Dvorak

Dvorak was a wonderful composer. It's no wonder that Brahms, who was not stupid, kept pushing him to win competitions. Brahms was prickly, but he Knew good work when he heard it. He celebrated the victory of Prussia in 1871 with a cantata, which none of you have ever heard--but he went to see CARMEN 23 times. His followers abominated Wagner--but when Wagner needed the parts copied for DIE MEISTERSINGER by all the musicians in Wien, there was Brahms, in his corner, copying out the parts. Intelligence beats chauvinism. I'm only sorry that Partricia Janeckova didn't live to play the part. Eheu, Postumus,
