People that say the World Cup is the zenith of football are the same that fight over Messi and Ronaldo in the comments. The ESL would have been phenomenal. Players that don't feature for their national teams like Benzema , Lacazette, Ozil, etc. could feature in the same arena as players that do not have the support at the international level to win the World Cup (Messi, Ronaldo). Execution was poor. Idea was good.

. . . . . No. Just . . No. As a yearly thing. No. Scheduling would be a nightmare. Games would be poor. Fight would not be there. If you played you would know training is twice as hard as a game 2 -3 days a week. Sometimes 4. 4trainings a week. At the high level. Plus club level competition, league games. Travel, jet lagg. It's not gonna happen as in the physical world we live in. Plus some teams in the prem are playing 2 games a week sometimes. Then scheduling in a Champions league game. Leaving 1 or 2 days to rest and workout/train? They gotta drop the price tag and weekly pay on players that would solve the real problem.

@@THRIQUILLED Arsenal literally won’t play regular champions league football for the next decade or so. It’s been that way for almost twenty years now. How is Arsenal hurt by this? They aren’t because they already don’t factor into the current UCL system. This is true or many other stories clubs. Ajax for example has a good run from time to time but their business model forces them to sell their best players making a true consistent UCL bid difficult, read : impossible. Same goes for clubs like Dortmund or Monaco. Having them play in a league would be awesome because people know those squads have something to offer even though they can never win a UCL style tournament because of the reality of business in football.

@@houseofvenusMD No it's not because of the business in football. Thats the sport. You don't play well, you don't play champions. Arsenal doesn't play well. They don't. They don't get to be in the champions. That's football. Doesn't matter how big they are. You take away anything on the line to play for you get the MLS. Bad football, terrible commentating. Good football happens when something is on the line to play for. Champions league or relegation threat. That makes good football. This Superleague is a cry baby we are broke way to fix things. It's a solution to a money problem. If real Madrid is out they're out. That's football.

@@THRIQUILLED Literally no other country in the world can produce the basketball players, Gridiron football players, or Lacrosse players the US can. The US dominates most countries in Olympic events -- all of which follow the closed league/franchise model stateside. The MLS sucks because the MLS sucks -- not because of franchise structure. That structure has created the best athletes on Earth in multiple sporting disciplines. It will work in European football. You ignored my point about Messi and Ronaldo--two players who will never win a World Cup or another Champions League title despite having at least another five years of quality play between them. Why should they languish in the group stage or round of 16 of the Champions League for the rest of their career? Terrible teams finish at the bottom of a table in a franchise system. Just because they play the champions each year doesn't mean they are handsomely rewarded. On the contrary they never fall down to a level where they can delude themselves into thinking they are great for a year. Instead they have to do the hard work of improving the team knowing damn well they will face the Champions every year.

@Chief We will NEVER allow a closed system without relagation that allows the current big clubs to remain the big clubs forever. The 'big six' are actually Liverpool, Man Utd, Everton, Aston Villa, Leeds and Nottingham Forrest!

ESL wouldn't kill football & it wouldn't kill the respective leagues. It would kill the Champions League and make a better tournament. (b/c apart from 'permanent' founding qualification, this was a great idea that UEFA feared)

"apart from 'permanent' founding qualification" this was essentially the Champions's League 2024 revisions. The entire issue *was* the permanent qualification for the majority of teams in the league.
