@alexlowe205417 күн бұрын
It's because the plane is angled up, not down. Which means it's climbing. That only happens if the plane is taking off, or going around after a missed landing. Considering the very clear weather, a go-around is unlikely, and taking a picture after a go-around is also unlikely. So, it's likely landing. It's also turning towards the mountains, which only makes sense if the plane is taking off. There likely aren't any runways in those mountains, so a landing isn't likely. It's more likely to be taking off, pointing towards the mountains.
@k03hl3r16 күн бұрын
@@alexlowe2054 Also probably one of the easiest way to tell that it's a takeoff is at that altitude in an approach the plane would be gear down and at least 20 degrees of flaps. The flaps in his photo are up.
@theplaneguy4516 күн бұрын
@@k03hl3r actually, you can see that the flaps are down about 10-20˚. You are not wrong that the flaps show takeoff though, as they would be closer to 30˚ or 40˚ if they were landing.

I think the most important takeaway here isn't that Rainbolt knows every place on earth. He had no idea where exactly the scenery outside of the place was. No, the most important thing is that a lot of people most way too much info about themselves online to make this possible. If this was the only image Rainbolt had access to and it wasn't posted on the day of the flight then I don't think he would've found it. But all the context clues about the user that posted it make it possible. If I posted a random image of a street in a town I cycled through to school every day he probably wouldn't be able to find it, but if I then also posted where I live and where I went to school then it's suddenly quite easy.

It would still be extremely easy to find the exact flight with just that image (and the knowledge that it was tweeted live), it's an aerial view spanning miles with multiple defining landmarks which is arguably better info than the streetview in GeoGuessr. It would just take longer since he couldn't immediately confirm it's Mexico at that exact airport, he'd need to manually look over the map where he thinks it is to find it.

It's funny that I learned this lesson over a decade and a half ago. I was on a private forum where someone posted a vacation photo, and the person found the exact place they took the photo from. Granted, it was in a major city with multiple landmarks, but the only information was a single picture. That day taught me to never post information that could identify me online. It's surreal that there are people alive today that grew up with the internet and never learned how quickly and easily someone can find their location using just a small bit of information.
@mischa782316 күн бұрын
This reminds me of a girl I was briefly chatting with a few years ago. We were just online friends and never shared our addresses. One day she sent me a photo out of her new apartement after she moved. So I've invested like 20 Minutes (I'm not as good as rainbolt lol) and then simply asked her if she "moved into City X, Specific Street Y, in the apartement Z". And she was soooo shocked. Explained to her that the photo had enough information to get this information. Anyway... That was the moment I realized I might give stalker vibes due to this kind of hobby. We didn't talk much after that. But to be fair that's mainly due to me not buying her crap in an online game xD.

if he assumed wrong, then the flight path wouldn't line up, and then he can correct his assumption, but until then occam's razor holds. I’d think that the most likely reason he’d be going somewhere else is a connecting flight. JetBlue mostly flies out of New York and Boston, but they operate quite a few flights out of LAX. So a relatively short hop to LA then a Transcon to JFK.

Rain bolt that winglet is the A320 family sharklet. The color is used by jet blue and delta. All you know from that winglet is that it is either and a319, a320, or a321 on delta or JetBlue

Would you consider doing more detailed breakdowns of the websites and tools you use to do these sorts of things? It may seem easy to you but for the average person like me, idk how to even start! You have a lot of knowledge on these things!

Big whooptidoo. I once found someones location from a picture of a white piece of paper with the background being their wooden table. I used my skills to identify the wood, look up the makers in that area, and from there find out their address. This was quite a failure, but luckily there was 1 more hint I was able to find in the picture, which was their address on the piece of paper. It also had a name on it, it was my mom's.

This really goes to show that people post WAY more information that they're even aware of, or at least that they post information that implies or leads to other easily obtained information than they would ever imagine. This is just one easy example obtained from publicly available resources with a little bit of knowledge. Imagine how far someone could go with most people's profiles if they were using shady or illegal tools...
