You can cycle from Bermondsey in south London to Paddington in west central London about 40 minutes, entirely on quiet streets and protected cycled lanes.
The route is about 6.4 miles long (10.3km) and makes use of Cycleway 4, Cycleway 14, the Baylis Road and Westminster Bridge cycle tracks, plus Cycleway 3. It also takes in the new Park Lane cycleway, a short section of Cycleway 27, and a few cut-throughs of my own creation... it covers a lot, actually!
The 40 minute journey time isn't much longer than taking the Tube, a journey for which you would normally have to change trains in any case.

I have to say, I usually feel like the infra in London looks a bit worse for wear, but that new C4 section looks pretty amazing. As a Dutchie, I am impressed. Keep it up TfL!

Another great video. One thing that I find difficult as a somewhat non confident cyclist is when the cycle path im following suddenly veers to the opposite side of the road and becomes a contra flow. So videos like yours are invaluable for, at the very least, increasing awareness of these odd spots so when I'm out and about at least I have a chance of recognising one from your videos Thank you!

Great video as ever! My commute takes me through hyde park to Paddington. Nothing quite as glorious as the serpentine on a crisp sunny morning. Would be great to get your take on Shepherd’s Bush to Paddington!

These videos are so well shot! I´ll be moving to London and am planning on commuting by bike. I was a little scared but seeing your videos makes me feel a little more prepared. Although having recently read yet another article in The Guardian about why everyone in the UK hates cyclists, I am still a bit worried not gonna lie :)) BUT! I was curious if you could show us your filming set up! The videos always look incredibly smooth and there are no disruptions when you dismount or turn! Tell us your secret please! I would also like to issue a video request if you have the time :) I would like to know your recommended route from Caledonian Road to Easton Square! Regards from The Netherlands

Thank you! that's great to hear. Personally I wouldn't worry too much about the Guardian article, I genuinely think you'll find it a lot easier in London - my experience has been it's getting better and I agree with Isabel Hardman's quotes in that piece. (Though of course its nowhere near as good as the Netherlands) Set-up wise I have a GoPro Hero 8 Black and I have it mounted on my handlebars - I pretty much use it on stock settings and the image stabilisation takes care of the rest. For Caledonian Road to Euston Square, head for York Way which has good cycle lanes down it south of Hungerford Rd. Then Turn right into Goods Way, take Midland Road south, cross into Judd Street and use the Tavistock Place cycle lanes as far as Gordon street, which should take you to close to where you're going - very easy ride! I'm planning to do a video incorporating York Way cycle lanes but I've been waiting for Islington to put in a new low-traffic neighbourhood nearby which will mean I can reach a bit further with it. Good luck with the move!

I'm way too inexperienced/unconfident to cycle right now (even on bike-only paths) but these videos are really useful - thanks for making them! Would love to see more Lewisham/SE routes, maybe including one to/from Battersea? 🙂

Thanks for the great video as always! Since you usually mention cool facts about the routes you take, I thought you might like to know that Birdcage Walk (and Pall Mall on the other side of St James' Park) still has gas lamps for street lighting - the ones on Birdcage Walk are apparently the oldest still in use in London, built during the time of George IV.

trying to work out how to get from hyde park to regents park - from what I can see on google street view, the suggested cycling routes dont have any cycle lanes, never mind protected ones haha

yeah sadly there isn't a great way - I used to commute this way and I think the most pleasant way is Stanhope Place, Seymour Street, Seymour Place, then Crawford Street. there are various ways of doing the last bit, I used to go Devonshire Place and then cross on foot at the lights to Mcfarren place and York Terrace East. but it really isnt fantastic - hopefully should be improved fairly soon

And can you do another video to Lewisham, but via Greenwich park; as I believe (upon looking at the cycle maps of London), it to be really free of traffic and much easier.

Nice video but at 7:38, this is actually an illegal right-turn as the blue MANDATORY road sign says all traffic must turn left, so unless the rules have changed, I believe in the highway code and is stated inside the TSRGD (Government road sign manual), it says that the blue MANDATORY signs refer to ALL traffic road or pavement, so essentially a right turn outside this hospital is illegal until the council have placed an "Except Cycles" exception plate beneath, luckily though the police don't enforce this stupid rule though, but other than that, this is a really good cycling video and no doubt, most things shown has been somewhat improved by now.
@Londoncycleroutes
@Londoncycleroutes 2 ай бұрын
yes it really should have an except cycles sign on it as you say - technically the legal way to make the right turn into the lanes is to use the toucan crossing on the left rather than cross in the gap

If you went down Lower Marsh and right onto Westminster Bridge Road, instead of Baylis Road and Hercules Road, you would’ve saved a few mins and a whole lot of lefts and rights.

Wow. I haven't been to London in a while and it's really impressive how far the infra has come in the past few years. And quite depressing how bad it is where I currently live, where the council seems to believe that painted gutters, shared paths, and "quietways" that take ridiculously round-the-houses routes, are all we need...

Great ride, but at one point you were turning right, and a pedestrian crossing the road, had to halt and give way to you. Under the new highway code rules, you should have defered to him, shouldn't you?
@Londoncycleroutes
@Londoncycleroutes 2 жыл бұрын
yes good point - that looks a bit hairier sped up than it actually was, he was actually standing/walking around in the road talking on his phone and moved in my general direction while i was turning, rather than him trying to cross the road- I don’t think he was too bothered- but it was indeed his right of way
