A father & daughter's obsession with a series of peculiar houses

Over 2,000 Lustron homes were constructed in America shortly after World War II, through 1950. What makes them special? Why was production stopped? And what drives this father-daughter team's obsession with these peculiar, historic homes?

I would think if someone wanted one and could locate and procure one slated for demolition, the house could probably be disassembled with hand tools and could be relocated; provided you had access to a crane and a large truck to lift up all the sections, load them up, and haul them to their new location?

Your theory is correct. There is one that was relocated from Virginia to an Ohio museum. They actually rebuilt it inside the building!

The Lustron home failed because they were NOT as affordable as similar site built homes. In addition to the kit, you had to purchase the land, foundation and utility hook-ups, plus transportation costs. You could purchase a complete, turn-key site built home for about $7500 at that time.

There's a house in Tuscumbia, Alabama on Woodmont Drive. Not for sure how the condition is. It's been vacant for years now.

really, i remember when lightning hit our house in skokie.. seemed as if it hit attic fan then somehow found its way to groundwire on chimney..

The entire house is essentially a lightning rod and will keep its occupants safe. Safer than a wood framed house.

I can see some appeal...but not sure they would make the outside design with squares all over the front ...they made the interior inside with vertical panels. .why not do the same outside.

"they look like a gas station" and you can tell its a Lustron home when you pull up in the drive, and a bell goes Ding Ding and a man in a blue uniform comes out and asks "how many gallons would you like today ? can I check your oil, wash your windshield, replace your wipers? check your tire pressure, Overhaul your engine?, get you a cold bottle of Coke while you wait?' man, those were the days ☺
