This video documents the New Year's goods fair and the making of various local snacks in the Xinzhou Ancient City.
Xinzhou, located in the central-northern part of Shanxi Province, was historically known as "Xiurong." The region features diverse topography with mountains, rivers, and crisscrossing waterways. Since ancient times, it has been a frontier area where the northern ethnic groups and the Han people interacted. It boasts a long history and rich culture. Xinzhou is home to many famous historical sites, such as Mount Wutai, which is known as one of the "Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains" and the "Roof of North China," and the Yanmen Pass, hailed as the "First of the Nine Great Fortresses Under Heaven" and the "Number One Pass of China." The ancient city of Xinzhou is another notable relic.
Xinzhou is also known as the "Capital of China's Mixed Grains," producing a variety of crops, including millet, oats, buckwheat, sorghum, and corn. The local snacks here are not just trendy, uniform delicacies found everywhere. Instead, they are truly authentic local flavors that make one's mouth water.
Many merchants have posted guarantees at their entrances, using strong vows such as "If the ingredients are not good, we are willing to be struck by lightning or suffer poverty for life." Their simple words and actions, as well as their serious attitude towards making delicious food, have been very inspiring to me. It is definitely worth watching!
