During the American Revolution, many women supported the effort in whatever way they could. Deborah Sampson disguised herself as a man and enlisted in the 4th Massachusetts Regiment.
She served in the Hudson River Valley of New York and was wounded in action, but was discharged after her gender was discovered. However, she was able to petition the state of Massachusetts for back pay and received benefits from Congress as a disabled veteran. And after her death, her husband successfully petitioned for benefits as a Soldier's spouse.
