A Few Things I Know About Her

Mirabai is a cultural icon and her images and stories swamp our popular culture. The conflicts expressed in her poetry however, do not always tally with these popularly held belief. The film explores some of these contradictions. We discover some alternate traditions of Mira and a personal connection is formed with this "Mystic Saint", who lived and died 500 years ago. We travel from the towns and villages of Rajasthan to the vast desert, in search of Mira. All the characters we meet have been living with Mira in different ways and in the telling of her story,they often tell us their own. Sometimes there are more than two sides to a story; sometimes there are a hundred. Some of the themes the film explore are relativity of history, validity of the personal in religion. And always there is Mira, singing for us in various voices.

A very informative documentary. A very raw and localized perspective on her personality. She has been one of the most underestimated figures of religious revivalism in Medieval India. Thank you for the documentary. It helped me in teaching this topic to my students.

Beautiful villages and culture.. with a unique essence... Nice documentary... I just wish it was longer.... With subtitles.. This reminded me of a picture of a devoted saint I once drew for a class assignment in school... She was Meera. Those days...

Anjali Punjabi, first so many thanks for this work! It took to Mira birth place but not close to her. Since you are the director, this is for you. Where are subtitles? It would be more useful with English subtitles for non-Hindi speakers. Also, you need to follow-up when there are questions. Tushar Talele was asking about books that you could refer. In case of questions, people may contact you or your department if there is a contact information. I am also looking for one good book in English that I can refer to understand this great lover of God and poet.

This documentary was recorded in 2002. KZbin came much later. So, eventually a couple of things were not in the documentary that we now find, such as, due credits to the speakers (not at the end rather while they were speaking in the frame). However, it's a great work. If you are looking for a book on Mirabai then you might like to read "Mira aaj ke samay me". There are a lot researches done on her. You can look for them too.

More a film about rural Rajasthan than Mirabai. What 'few things about her'.....

One way to talk about someone who is no longer present in blood and flesh form is to find that person through the ways they are alive. Here, Mirabai is alive through her bhajans, poems and the people who sing them. The rural Rajasthan that you saw was a part of it. They exhibited Mira's bhajans and how they adapted it over the time to accomodate their meanings through it. In the sense, singing and dancing to Mira's bhajans is a way the society keeps Mira and her story alive in the public or social memory. Hence, Rajasthani folk songs or the rural part of it was essential in tracing Mira.
