Most important hud advice i ever heard was making the target cast bar huge and putting it in the middle of the screen. It's so nice to actually know what's coming next.

11:27 You can actually do the wiggle trick on legacy by holding down S, left click, and right click at the same time. Same thing as on standard but holding backwards and left click along with it.
@kawaxiv

Yeah other commenters brought it up as well. I knew about this at some point before the video and had just forgotten about it at the time I was recording. Reason I don't really go with it is having my left hand anchored on S to do it. Makes it feel like my motion around the keyboard becomes more limited as I'm trying to maintain rotation throughout the look-away mechanic. Definitely a good option for people who are on legacy though, especially those who don't have any issue with the finger anchored on S or who are using MMO mouse or things like that. I like the standard wiggle cause no movement keys are required so my left hand remains completely free for rotation. edit: also what the hell... after watching again to see what I said at your time stamp, why at 12:00 ish in the video did I cut back to DSR footage that is completely irrelevant to lookaway/facing mechanics? I'm pretty sure that's a mistake and I meant to cut to another Dive from Grace tower placement example but I cut to a completely irrelevant section. I must have messed my edit up and not noticed D:

Thanks for your kind words, and so sorry I forgot to reply the first time I saw this. I played a lot of GW1 when I was in high school, so naturally I actually tried GW2 first, playing until some point in LWS2 before HoT came out when I got sick of it and left. Couple years later I tried FF14, it was about patch 3.2 when I started. I've had an off and on relationship with Guild Wars 2 ever since then, where I usually come back, catch up on content, do a bit of raids or fractals, and then get bored again and leave... I have 1769 hours in GW2 and about 11k in FFXIV for comparison

Another disadvantage of Standard Movement is that your character changes movement direction when using any action on the boss. Reproduce: Walk next to a striking dummy, facing not directly towards it. Use any action. You'll notice your character and camera rotate and walk towards the dummy instead of continuing in the original direction. If you hold Right click, your character will snap back to the original walking direction after the action is finished. If you hold Right click and wiggle your mouse, this happens pretty much instantly. I just recently had a very experienced and proficient raider who uses Standard cause a wipe due to this in p12s (Caloric Theory). It can be played around by holding Right click + wiggling, but this is not necessary with Legacy Movement.

Thank you for sharing! I discuss and demonstrate this in the video as well. It's in the part about Automatically Face Target rather than under the standard/legacy section in the beginning but I explain and even demonstrate it.

great guide, this gave me a lot to consider. obsessing over the bars is my specialty i do like the 1-6 and z-n rows. but its so hard for me to wanna go horizontal. i play fps games where mouse move doesnt exist. it just seemed natural to put weaponskills on Q/E and i eventually went esdf to squeeze in the DRG 5 hit combo. (segue into one of my niche keybind ideas, i could use a 3rd party app to put shift/ctrl on left/right click; or L2/R2, to utilize the WXHB double tap hidden bars. god i wish holding shift would highlight the shift bar.) i always settle on 123456 / tabQWRTY / capsA`7GH / ZXCVBN and yes row 3 does bother me lol, and so does the fit of caps A to ZXC the number row and tab-Y row comfortably resolve the E/D (move fwd/back) column into a horizontal symmetry which then immediately gets messy on the next row. you'd think `7 should go on the outer edges. but this messes up the alignment too much, caps A must be right below tab Q, and on the right we must have exact projection for rty gh vbn. so the number row "corners" fill the middle hole left by the strafe keys. i reserve them for rare stuff i dont want to accidental push like tank stance etc. i skip using them at all when the job allows my basic goal is that job/class skills always go on these 24 top layer keys, which neatly fit 2 bars. i can get away with mostly just one modifier: shift does role actions / sprint / LB in a 10 keys "donut" shape on a 3x4 bar QWRT / A _ _ G / ZXCV. the middle hole of this bar is potion/tincture on Alt+WR. heals are together on the left side, offense is together on the right side. i dont want to press modifiers at any point in my rotation if i can help it. so until i need a situational, pinky is free to press upper left corner keys, not "anchored". there are fights where my role actions as melee DPS are negligible and i dont have to press shift at all. ctrl on caps lock is good but i like having 1 "pinky modifier" and 1 "thumb modifier" for my bars. admittedly Alt is a tougher reach with esdf. but i really like the horiz symmetry with CapsA / GH. this makes my setup bearable lol. I rebinded caps to insert. i do double binds sometimes but it leaves me frustrated. i wanna have all 10 bars active. i wanna have a 100 inch monitor and all the skills for all the jobs onscreen at once. i want a 400 button keyboard and a brain computer interface, and i want a supercomputer that can run the VR plugin without exploding. i want to play the game from the cockpit of an actual f16 fighter jet and have the flight yoke and throttle duplicate inputs to the game so i can play ffxiv on the sly while on my daily commute in active duty. i want hydaelyn to reach through the screen and take my soul so i can truly become a lizard person. i want a flying cat

@@noaag This is the greatest KZbin comment I have received so far. Please stop by my Twitch chat. Please show up in my Twitter timeline. Not asking out of any self promotion but because I am so thoroughly entertained and would like to read your writings again some day. Last paragraph is art. Thank you. If you have modifier keys have you considered MMO Mouse? It's not quite as advanced as a brain interface but I think their popularity does have a lot to do with avoiding modifiers, although to me it seems like a lot of work for just one thumb to do.

@@kawaxiv thanks :) i might show up in twitch chat I agree on the MMO mouse, though I do want one, I like distributing the work for skilling across my left hand instead of just a thumb. Some people use half of it for skills and the other half for misc actions. I did buy a MaxxStick. For analog movement and free key access. But god I hate that thing. Don't buy the lite/le, the angle is so bad, the newer versions seem more viable. Perk over an analog stick keypad (hori or logitech) is that you can chat normally. But I can't reach the number row at all due to it going in front of spacebar.

I disagree with disabling your own name tag. In the midst of chaos, it’s good to know where you are standing. Something that helps is changing your name plate to a unique color and your party members name plate to a different color

on legacy movement you can wiggle-strafe to keep your character looking away from the boss.
@kawaxiv
@kawaxiv Жыл бұрын
Oh, true, I realize now I've heard of that before. I probably didn't even remember it because it didn't "solve" legacy for me, because with all my abilities activated on the keyboard, it doesn't seem viable to me to be spamming A/D with my left hand while maintaining a rotation that I intend to play with the same hand. Is that popular with MMO mouse users perhaps where the simultaneous execution of wiggle strafing and rotation would be on opposite hands? Thanks for contributing this info by the way!

Always fun to see how other players conceptualize their keybinds and setups for play! I'm at about 3.2k hours on controller doing Savage/Ulti raiding as my main content, and love it, but am experimenting with KBM before Dawntrail releases to see if I want to move over. Analog sticks die WAY too quickly, and all 3 of my main raiding controllers (PS4 PS5 and Series X) have had at least 1 stick drift. Will definitely try ESDF and apply some of your ideas to see if they work for me. Great video! (Also, grats on clearing TOP!)

another way to do the look away thing which i personally use is hold left and right click and hold S while facing away does the exact same thing as the wiggle but you dont have to wiggle lol (this is legacy btw)
@kawaxiv
@kawaxiv Жыл бұрын
yeah, that works in legacy, would not work without wiggling in standard (because legacy with any movement input does not change the "relativity" of that movement input upon auto-face-target triggering, while your attack auto-facing you towards the target defines a new "forward" from that moment in standard which requires the wiggle to reset) Unfortunately, there's still a trade off, which is that a movement key needs to be held. For me, it's easier to do the wiggle while keeping my rotation going than to keep my rotation going while holding "S" so it's another great option for Legacy that just doesn't quite work out for me.

I didn't use legacy for a long time, but legacy is so much better for kiting, so I finally made the switch. The only part that I'm slow on adjusting to is attacking before a gaze attack then facing back before the attack goes off. I think part of that is due to my internet latency in the boonies.

there actually is a way to face away while attacking with legacy movement, you need to hold left and right click to walk, and S to counter the walking, it's a bit convoluted and i haven't tested if it works the same but it should! and it doesn't seem too complicated to pull off for a couple attacks now and then

Idk how people play on anything but wasd movement, but you have me debating thinking, do i move more with my mouse, or do I move more with my wasd? And rebinding movement to esdf (I think is what you did) makes a lot of more room for keybinds. Idk if i could do that, but you have me debating. And someone else commented about wiggling char for turning char around with legacy. What I do is just tap off my target and face away from the target, for instance the creepy.dolls at the end of the anti tower. And the compass map, I might take your idea where you use the square map because I cannot count how many times ive ran into walls in ARR dungeons bcuz stupid map design and the damn small map, despite being zoomed all the way out. V good video. V informative.

In my mind, legacy players and MMO mouse players use movement keys the most, but I don't know if that's *actually* true or just my perception. You're right about ESDF - I didn't focus on it cause most people act pretty repulsed by it but I think there's a lot of benefits - a few more hotkeys to the left of your movement buttons, and the tactile bump on "F" to help locate "home" without looking, being better centered below number keys to possibly reach one more key further to the right on that row. The biggest downside is the normal "ctrl" reach becomes further, but as you also probably noticed, my ctrl key is where Caps Lock normally is. Thank you I appreciate your comment.

Do you have a library of your skill layouts for each class? Just to compare your layout theory to other classes?
@kawaxiv
@kawaxiv 6 ай бұрын
The latter, I put similar concepts in similar places, but my ideas of where buttons should be do get interfered with by jobs that have too many buttons of a certain type, for example Samurai has a lot of DPS rotational actions spilling over into slots I feel they don't belong in, but there's only so much I can do about it so I just cope... EDIT: Oh sorry I misunderstood the question a bit. I'll see if maybe I can make an Imgur gallery of screenshots of my hotbars on all the jobs, but I'll have to get to that later tonight. I'll ping you in another reply with the link when I've done it.

@@bboy458 Here's a screenshot of my bars on every job. Reminder that keybinds shown are not necessarily always keybinds I use due to double binding. Most notably the Shift+6 slot is often "A", the arm's length/surecast button is my only mouse thumb button, Tank stances F4, provoke F1 Shirk F2. On a healer, Rescue is F1 even though its not in the same hotbar slot because its also on an invisible hotbar for fkeys, etc. I am a tank main so those are the most finely tuned ones for me. I play Melee DPS the least. Outside of tanks I'm happiest with my Magical DPS hotbar setups. Sorry about the light curtain bozja action I left on the WAR bar by mistake. I'm using ShareX to draw on the screen! It is an open source screenshot program, so I just started the process of taking a screenshot, went to draw mode, and then instead of committing the screenshot I just cancelled when I was done. As long as OBS Studio is in Display capture mode when you do it, or if you're discord screen sharing, select the monitor/display instead of the specific ffxiv application and people will be able to see the drawing while you're doing it.

idk a single person who uses legacy to back up to see bosses appearing lol. everyone i know uses it because auto face messes up the direction you move. as in if you run a direction and use a skill you will continue to move in your intended direction, unlike standard that will make you auto face and run in janky directions. also for looking away and still attacking with legacy instead of camera wiggle you wiggle left/right witht he straife keys. same effect.
