This fall, four great actors return to Broadway in two great plays, performed in repertory. IAN McKELLEN, PATRICK STEWART, BILLY CRUDUP and SHULER HENSLEY star in Harold Pinter's comedy NO MAN'S LAND and Samuel Beckett's classic WAITING FOR GODOT. Sean Mathias' productions present a startling new look at these two theatrical masterpieces.
Now on Broadway through March 2, 2014. Purchase tickets at www.twoplaysinrep.com

I was lucky enough to see them on Broadway yesterday and by God, they were amazing. Sir Patrick Stewart is brilliant in playing a neurotic, impulsive, but somehow rational Vladimir, while Sir Ian McKellen is adorable as a forgetful, funny, and rather child-like Estragon. I can't believe I shared the same space as these two legends! God bless them, truly!

Ah, but then we would never have cherished them or their contribution, we'd take them for granted and forget them. It is better this way, to be born, live a story, and die. Endings imply beginnings, and nothing happens in a vacuum, or only once! =D

I had the pleasure of seeing them perform Godot in London and enjoyed it tremendously. I have always liked the play ever since I first saw it when I was 20 (56 years ago). Since then I have been amazed at the number of people who just cannot see the humour in it. In London, I sat next to someone who never laughed once, and did not return after the interval. Their loss, not mine.

Just this evening I saw the Dutch version. Beforehand, the director came on stage, apologizing and explaining that the theater's freight elevator to bring the truck with the decor and props to stage level had broken down. The theater's mechanics had frantically tried to solve the problem, but alas. All they could get on stage were the tree and Lucky's luggage. The audience were a good sport and enjoyed the play all the same.

We read this play out loud in class. The two people who read for Vladimir and Estragon had such perfect comic timing together. Each line delivery was spot on, quick one right after the other just like the actual play. I read for Pozo the slave master and tried my best to keep up, but they were way into it. On the last day, the guy reading Vladimir was late to class, so someone else was reading the part. They were no where near as good. What pissed me off was that even when the guy who usually reads showed up, the other person refused to give up the part and read as a shitty Vladimir for the rest of class, stammering and pausing and keeping no good rhythm with the other person. (Like I said, this was just a class read, so there was no official casting. We were supposed to trade off every few pages, but the people reading were so good, we let them do the entire thing) I wanted to stand up and demand he give the part back to the better actor.

I am interested in the production. I have seen many productions of Godot, and if this clip is anything to go on, its played for laughs more than other versions I have seen. Many of those lines ("well, that passed the time") when delivered by other performers was received more in the spirit of hopelessness. I think that's why Beckett is great. Like Shakespeare, he can be struck at in different places on his surface and evoke new tones.
@morph628
@morph628 7 жыл бұрын
I agree, but I think there is a hopelessness inside of the comedy. On one level the delivery is laugh-out-loud funny because of the absurdity surrounding people's need to comment while not actually saying anything; on another level there is a crushing dread because nothing they do or say will change their condition- i.e. time will pass no matter what; and there is not a dang thing they can do about it. What do you think?

My drama teacher just came into our class one day to brag about going to this play when we were learning about absurdism since this play was an absurdist play. I spent nearly every penny I had (as a student) to fly to New York and see this live last year. It is by far the best enactment of Waiting for Godot I have ever seen (on film or otherwise). I've asked and asked and searched even more for any inkling that this will be released as a dvd or something. Nobody ever answers and nothing ever comes of it. It would really be a crime for Sir Patrick and Sir McKellen's work to diminish with the minds of the very few who had the luxury of seeing it live.

I am in the infant stages of learning dramaturgy. My mentor and I were discussing this version (he has seen it multiple times, meeting Patrick and Ian.) My feelings are that this version is well done by masters of the art, but it is also a bit over the top. I feel as though the audience is there to see Captain Picard and Gandalf clown onstage instead of a great classic play. It is not the actors fault, they were great, if a bit slappy. The 2001 film, for me, is the perfection of this masterpiece. For all of that…THIS is the play I want to see first when I get to Broadway.

It's not. At least, not a comedy in the way they're portraying it. You'd never sell Waiting for Godot to a Broadway audience if you portrayed it as it really is; a black comedy about the futility of life and the everyday struggles of mankind. It's funny in some places (the parts they've shown), but it's black as hell for the rest of it.

Call me old fashioned but I would rather watch anything else. Beckett leaves me cold. His plays are nonsense made up to be art. Mind you even most art leaves me cold. A cold fish out of water, dull eyed and smelling of its age. Oh, yes I see the good in an actor making the best of a pile of caca and I go weak over a few Twomblys and completely gaga at a good Brett Whitely. But I wonder at the rubbish put up as high achievements against those recognised high achievements of the past. Given money I would fill my house with moderns and stuffs you would not like either , mostly Roman glass, mosaics and greek statues , possibly that Guernica of Picasso's so I am no arbiter of good taste, shrug. Hardly worth the mention, really.
