I m glad to see all these subscriptions dollars put to good developments. And yet hatches and linetypes are still a huge pain, but at least I can share it now
@thecadgeek3 жыл бұрын
AutoCAD linetypes do remain relatively basic when compared to something like Microstation. That said, if it’s just a custom line type you’re after, I have a full blog series on how to more easily create custom linetypes with Express tools. thecadgeek.com/blog/custom-autocad-linetype/ Similarly, as someone who works in the civil industry, I certainly relate to many of the the hatching struggles of AutoCAD. That said, it’s mentioned towards the end of the video, but hatch boundary creation does become a multi-core process in AutoCAD 2022. I haven’t had a chance to conduct an exhaustive text of hatch boundary creation in AutoCAD 2022, but it should theoretically be more efficient (as practically every CAD-capable machine I know today has a multi-core processor).

I appreciate your excellent presentation. I like the block count, and variety of the automatic updating fields. Just wondering if the style of text inside the fields are controlled by the current style or different options. Also, I like the use of multi cores being used when plotting. Also, interested in finding out if this version of AutoCAD can use the system variable "Whipthread" to maximize the use of all cores. The information out there is very limited on the 2019 version I'm using. We will be updating soon. Thanks again for this awesome video presentation.

The block count tool is huge for landscape architects who spend way too much time doing plant counts. Yes, it’s just a LISP routine, blah blah blah, but for the sole practitioner who doesn’t have an IT department to write them, I’m thrilled to see it integrated.

Wondering if you can have the autosaves drop into your saved folder with the dwg extension rather than BAK? is it as simple as setting it up in that setting box in options?
@thecadgeek3 жыл бұрын
Autosaved drawings and BAK files are entirely separate things. Under the Files tab of the OPTIONS command, you have the ability to specify an "Automatic Save File Location." Autosave files created in this location typically havs a SV$ file extension. AutoCAD automatically deletes these files when you close AutoCAD, but they remain whenever AutoCAD crashes. By contrast, BAK files are a backup of the last version of your DWG file. That's to say, BAK files are always one version (aka Save) behind the DWG file itself. By default, AutoCAD creates BAK files in the same directory as the DWG file itself. You can override this behavior by using the MOVEBAK variable. In either case, if trying to recover a drawing after a crash, the Drawing Recovery Manager (DRAWINGRECOVERY) is the best place to start.

It's still a relatively young product, but I'd encourage you to have a look at AutoCAD for Web. It's a web-based version of AutoCAD that uses the same underlying engine as the desktop version uses. The Web version doesn't have all the commands of the desktop version, but I've found its performance easily matches the desktop version of AutoCAD and is far more capable than I initially gave it credit.

Is this new count feature replace the data extraction or it is just another way to generate schedule? Autodesk should add more import/export feature and collaboration tools. I am using autocad mostly to translate model from non-Autodesk software since Revit is lack those feature. We are working on highly collaborative environment and Autodesk still make their software like silo.
@thecadgeek3 жыл бұрын
I see the new Count Palette more as a middle ground between the BCOUNT command and Data Extraction, not a replacement. The Count Palette has the power of simplicity, whereas Data Extraction is more complex, but also more powerful. As an example, I couldn’t do something like sum the values of a Block Attribute with the Count Palette, but that’s certainly something I can do with Data Extraction. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaDSYWR6fNhjqtU

There is an iOS version of AutoCAD that you can download to your iPad. I gave up on Autocad in 2002 when I found out about Revit. It makes me cringe when I have to use Autocad to open a once in blue moon file that I can’t open in Revit. Why you would use Autocad for building design rather than Revit is beyond me as even its 2D drafting capabilities leave Autocad behind.
@thecadgeek3 жыл бұрын
I think the key observation here is that AutoCAD is used for more than just building design. Not just that, but Revit as an electronic deliverable has only become commonplace in the last 5-10 years, and still not universal. As such, if you're a building owner, you probably have AutoCAD DWGs for all but the newest buildings you manage. Heck, you probably have a lot of scanned PDFs of hand-drawn drawings too.
@rickyeates98103 жыл бұрын
What a joke! I remember when a release of AutoCAD would be revolutionary! Watching with horror as your drawing disappeared the first time you tried paperspace. Subscription has made Autodesk lazy. Oh for the good old days but AutoDesk isn't the only Villon. Adobe and Trimble are basically sitting around collecting money as well. You no longer upgrade for new innovation. You pay for subscription to continue to use the products ONLY. BTW AutoCAD should have been multi threaded years ago. The count command is just someone's lisp routine put into the code.

In the current moment, I am thoroughly pissed. I have been using AutoCad Architecture for two decades, built up my layering system, custom window, door, stair, railing, wall types, etc. etc. and now it is all toast. On the professional architecture production side, I have been able to 3D model, cut sections/elevations, generate 2D details, apply materials, lighting and environment lighting to generate photographic renderings for my clients all in one software platform (one dwg file). As noted in a response below, Revit is a decent modeler but the 2d stuff, not so much. I teach Cad at the college level and tutor privately and only just learned about this change to AutoCad.......when observing a new students 2022 install. It's bad enough that Acad Architecture has been treated as a bastard child all these years, but now to be kicked to the curb..................................

As a customer whose company writes very large checks to Autodesk, I’ve certainly had similar feelings at times. Of course, on the flip side, software takes time to build. That said, something I feel many overlook is the impact of the AutoCAD for Web project on the (Windows) desktop version. As Autodesk creates AutoCAD for Web, they’re practically rewriting the core AutoCAD engine that powers the Windows desktop version. It usually doesn’t result in new features for the Windows version, but something it does do is make those rewritten commands on the desktop version more efficient and more stable. It’s always an imperfect balance; do you add features or improve the features that are already there? As an end-user, I want both. And when compared to some recent AutoCAD releases that were almost exclusively about improving existing features or adding new features, as a whole, I think AutoCAD 2022 strikes a good balance between each of those priorities.
