Sometimes considered "the next Kyoto", Kanazawa is quickly rising in popularity. I finally took my first trip there and went to visit for a few days - here's where I went and what I ate.

Great video! Makes me want to return to Japan once this COVID thing is over. Thoughts... 1. It immediately reminded me of Kyoto. 2. Are itakayus local restaurants? Specialty cuisines of the area? 3. I hadn’t considered trying regional ramen. Genius! 4. That sushi looked amazing! 5. I regret not trying tea shops while in Japan. Next time.

Thank you! I think you mean izakayas. They’re defined as casual pubs but they’re more like casual restaurants. It’s where locals like to eat so a lot of the non-national chains will have dishes that are catered to locals and using local ingredients. They can be hard for foreigners ( I have the hardest time reading their handwritten Japanese menus as well), but they make for an authentic experience.

@@barrettish Oh haha, you reminded me how the pretty handwritten daily menus in small restaurants and bars foil my attempts to use google translate-camera view also; it just doesn't recognise most hand-written or elaborate styles of font so I must be wily and bold and find another way to enjoy ordering food at izakayas. Such a great video, watched it twice. I did check out teashops and hope that Elisa does too next time as there are so many styles that everyone will have one they feel most enchanted by and comfortable in, like say, a kitsch Showa-era one, an ultra-modern high-end one or a traditional Edo-era style one. What I regret is not buying some small bags of local rice when travelling around and hand roasted barley tea to take home. Like Elisa said, 'next time'. :)

I'm planning on going on the JET Programme soon and Kanazawa definitely caught my eye! I was wondering how friendly are the locals to foreigners, I hear that in Kyoto they can be quite cold so that really put me off, so I was wondering what it's like in Kanazawa?

Yeah Kyoto is known to be a bit cold and kind of snobby, even to other Japanese people. I can’t say much about Kanazawa as I was just traveling but we didn’t feel any sort of negative vibes. I think overall, although you may come across some negativity as in any country, it’s not a big deal. Just be respectful and don’t cause a scene and you should be fine.

Yeah, they definitely were! English level really depends. Sometimes they'll have English menus or signs but the staff won't be able to much.

Hi Gabriel! Oh I feel you: I too cannot WAIT to be able to return to Japan once these disappointing international travel restrictions are eased. Just to give you my own two cents-worth here, I found most people's English in Japan rudimentary, however they really do try to meet you halfway as long as you can bust out a few very basic questions in Japanese and use hand gestures and show that you're trying a little. They're very polite and hey bonus, you can use google translate on your phone screen to help. Everybody I encountered was very pleasant, polite and kind. Perhaps we can both use this time whilst waiting to travel to watch great videos like this one so we can drop pins into our google maps of all the cool place we want to go. And we can save money and practice basic phrases like 'how much does this cost?', 'are you open?' 'is this spicy/is this vegetarian/is this pork?' 'Where is the bus for___?' etc. Good luck dude! And thanks to Mr Yabatan I now know how to yell 'I AM VERY SUPRISED!' in Japanese :D

It's right near Shinjuku, which is probably where you'll be based and it's open until really late at night so if you're jet lagged you'll have to find a way to fight me on Streetfighter 2 at midnight-- oh, I'll accept the challenge alright. You can cry yourself to sleep afterwards in your lovely hotel because I will absolutely destroy you, haha! ;) Have fun researching and saving Gabriel, you're going to have an absolute blast in Japan I just know it. :)

If you had been to Kanazawa before you’d have known that, while there was plenty of crab at Omicho, it was very expensive. I took my kids over there for lunch a couple of years ago and we got six crabs for ¥6000. ¥30,000 is very, very expensive for Kanazawa.

@@barrettish I’ve been here for 15 years and seafood prices have skyrocketed in that time. When I first came you could buy a whole unagi for ¥600-800 now they’re in the ¥3000-¥4000 range. It’s honestly pretty sad.

A lot of maintenance and often times rebuilt. Kanazawa was spared from a lot of the war bombings though, and apparently not many big natural disasters hit it which is great for them.

Kanazawa must be built on very solid ground to have so many old buildings that have survived all the earthquakes. Were you staying in a hotel? It would be nice to know which one, how much it cost, and if you liked it.

They're lucky to have had few natural disasters and they were spared bombings in war. I stayed at a new but basic hotel - Tokyu Stay. This is exactky right - the city is located in comparatively safe area (in terms of earthquakes) and it was one of very few Japanese cities which was spared during WW2

I'm actually not too sure since I went during a colder month and technically with a Covid situation still around. There are probably some pubs and izakayas that people will gather at though, that's pretty typical around Japan.

I am considering Kanazawa because of the salary, which will be around ¥360000 per month. Do you think it is enough to live with my wife there? (I considered Tokyo, too. But I know it is very expensive.)

@@evangelion045 I think it depends on what kind of lifestyle you want to have. 360,000 JPY will probably be a little tight for two people. You’re right though, Kanazawa will be more affordable than Tokyo. I just glanced at some apartments there for rent and in general they’re a fraction - maybe 1/3 or so - of what it’d be in Tokyo.
