A FISH OF A LIFETIME II MONSTER Musselcracker & White Steenbras

On this video, we finally got it right. BIGGER is BETTER!
We were on the hunt this winter for a big Musselcracker, and for the past month we made it our soul mission to catch one. The amount of Kilometers drove and walked after this fish makes it all worth it at the end. Graaitjie landed his first Musselcracker, and what a monster!
A fish of a lifetime!
Musselcrackers reach maturity at 35 cm fork length at an age of about 5 years. which is quite interesting,
White musselcracker have thick lips, powerful jaws and large teeth which enable it to eat black mussels, Siffies, urchins, whelks, crayfish, redbait, Armadillo, and Alikreukel..
Juveniles, which have bright orange fins, and are common in tidal pools.
Daily bag limit: 2 per person per day
Minimum size limit: 60 cm total length
Closed Season: None
We also caught some nice size Steenies and a couple of kilometres away we found and saved a big Steenie that's estimated around 23,24kg as it was definitely full of eggs.

Awesome Steenbras My Late Grand father and His brothers used to catch that size in Simonstown long before they Built newer Dockyard some time in the 1940's

Agree 100%. And those prime locations are getting less by the day due to anglers' ego (to their own detriment at the end of the day). Remote working from covid allowed for unprecedented Semigration patterns to more untouched parts of our coastline and increased fishing presure. Not to mention improved technology like the game changing braid. We need more MPA's to ultimately save our red listed endemic fish species. It's not all negative though, at least drone fishing is illegal now, protecting the sensitive zone which can neither be reached by the rock & Surf angler nor boats. And also tag & release efforts are trending more now theses days🏆

Hi Aiden, it was the anglers call, at the end it wasn't necessary to gaff i guess but it was his first cracker and viskoors was high. After this video he swopped the gaff with a net🤙

Great catch guys and great Vids, i would suggest if you planning to release the fish that's caught at least take care of it when landing it , that Steenbras scales were of its body because it was dragged along the rocks/shingle , most likely will die , just a suggestion. Nice spot and release on that female steenie , fair play 👍👍
