They figure it's because people (even professionals, but especially WSB) always carry a boatload of biases and emotional baggage to throw off their decision-making.

Also, since the cat chooses pretty much at random, it tends to choose less volatile stocks and therefore has a much lower risk. A single unfortunate high-risk purchase can ruin your entire portfolio, but if you only have low-risk purchases it all comes down to how good or bad your portfolio is on average.

You shouldn’t fault Graham too much, before the whole ftx scandal it looked very clean and normal even when you looked into it. The problem was the fraud that happened so people couldn’t tell that ftx was actually in a bad place. So when Graham took that sponsorship there really wasn’t any way for him to know what was going on behind the scenes. He also did make an apology video and tried to get the word out when he found out. I think it’s easy for us to look at a bad situation with hindsight sometimes (especially with KZbin sponsorships) and think they should’ve known better.

People starting construction projects means plenty of jobs, and often overtime for blue collar families, which leads to more buying and investing across the entire board. You can mess this up by creating a real estate bubble, where you are borrowing money for building far more of a particular type of building than can actually be sold and then defaulting on said loans, or starting more projects than can actually be completed in a reasonable timeframe and racking up maintenance cost on buildings that can't pay for themselves yet, which will just lead to deeper economic slumps. This is generally a side effect of governments and banks colluding to fake a housing boom until they make it, in the hopes that the construction workers will make enough money to put down payments on the houses they build, without actually checking (or just ignoring) those numbers.

I wish I could see the breadth of the Canadian housing market. I feel like I'm missing more than a few connections to understanding it. I knew someone who was looking to invest in housing construction about two decades ago. He got a bunch a of data, business plans, estimates and the like from a company building subdivisions north of Oshawa. At the time the market prices on new homes was around $350K CAD. Because the construction was being done like an assembly line there were a lot of cost savings. The turnkey average cost they estimated for homes made in their plan was a little over $150K CAD per house. That included materials, and labour, all the way out to sales. I suspect the biggest change to that equation these days is the cost of the land to build new housing. Urban sprawl and limits to commuting time for employment creates a rising gradient in prices into the cities. I hear it's creating pressures on rezoning land to accommodate new housing. Then again I've heard of companies doing this just to raise their land value for resale not to actually build affordable housing. People's incomes and the price of homes have not had balanced growth for a very long time. I hope your lumber investments are successful.

not an investor, but from what I can tell most people seem to invest in volatile stocks, I can't see why people would do that if they can't afford to watch them like a hawk, if I came into a good bit of money I'd probably put it in something like precious metals since inflation is just making them go up and up relative to cash potentially faster than most interest rates in the bank, not financial advice, just what I personally would do if I had money I was just sat on
