2022 unfortunately the path just before you climb down to the beach has collapsed last winter and it’s no longer possible to get down, not without a rope that is. The fishing to the South of this mark is excellent fishing for big pollock and mackerel. The rock is called Maen Gwenonwy (after King Arthur’s sister Gwenonwy). The other side of the causeway is called Porth Cadlan and the rocks on the other side of Cadlan are call Porth Whistlen. The field above Maen Gwenonwy is call Cadlan and this is where King Arthur was slain by Gwenonwy’s brother who came over from Ireland which is over the water to the West. Approximately 60 miles away. Arthur was taken to Afalon (Bardsey island or Ynys Enlli in Welsh) I live on the top of the hill to the East of there and I can see Dolphins and seals swimming around the rock. The spit of rock a little further on is called Trywn Penrhyn which the locals call mackerel rock. The water here is 100’ straight down over high tide and big congers and bull Huss can be caught there. The Welsh shore caught pollock of 17lb came from there in 1976, caught by a young local lad. Sadly the big pollock have long since gone. I get the odd one to about 10lb now and again on the very end which is called Ebolion or the rock to the North called Carreg Gybi. There’s a cave at low water level which runs through the headland near there which is called Ogor Llwyd or grey cave. I’ve crawled through it to the other side. In the summer on a calm day I fish all round there on my kayak and if you know where to fish it’s a fantastic place for big pollock and Bass + the odd big Balan. I’ve also caught some nice salmon and sewing around the coastline to Aberdaron, the biggest going 5lb, but I know a chap who caught one of 36lb and another friend who caught a 25lb salmon some 25 years ago to spinners. Tight lines. It’s worth my mentioning that sadly the mackerel have largely disappeared during last summer and this summer, but the few that we are catching and very big ones.

Wow, thanks for taking the time to write your comment. I had another trip down there and had been told about the history of the place, another local guy's nice had made a youtube video about it. I had now idea there was so much going on! We did manage to get down the path so it's still possible to access the area although the fishing wasn't that great and a few creel lines hindered us a fair bit. Interesting about the salmon, I had no idea they were down that way. Thanks again Nd tight lines👍🎣

@@SlippyLimpets thanks for your reply and I hadn’t realised the path was clear again even though I can see it from my sunroom through my scope. It was too dangerous to try it last summer. The time to fish Maen Gwenonwy is a couple of hours either side of high water on a spring tide on the South side towards the little reef which shows over low water for pollock and wrasse. The best time and place for good bass is on the causeway from a couple of hours after low tide on a spring up until you can no longer stand on it and casting back towards Porth Ysgo. By the way there’s fantastic fishing to be had from your kayak from Aberdaron beach around the little islands called Ynys Gwylanod Fawr & Bach (large & small Seagull islands). Very fast and deep current. However it’s not for the faint hearted. Anyway I love your brilliant videos and I hope to bump into you, we’ll not literally 😉next time you’re up this way.👍🏻

@@happyguy5414 I'm also local and can see this spot from my house. I fish this whole side of the Llyn regularly. I've had big pollock from seagull islands and that water isn't for the faint hearted, I wouldn't go alone but I'm very much a novice on a cheap "sit on top" I broke my PB on bass 4 times in one night, during a heavy storm, landed what I think just broke the 10lb mark. I don't think I've fished in worse conditions though 😂 If you fancy a bit of friendly competition I'd be up for a cast sometime - I very rarely see anyone fishing these marks and I don't know many people willing to put the effort in to get on location 👍

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I’ve now moved to Denbighshire, but I will be back staying at one of the caravan sites. I’ve fished those marks many many times, even paddling my sit on top all around the headland between the cliffs and Ebolion and going to Mae’n Gwenonwy. I’ve also landed on Ynys Gwlanod and fished off it. As you say it’s a scary place when the tide changes direction and starts to race. I’ve caught plenty of bass up to around 3lb all along Aberdaron beach casting a 28 gram lure on 6lb nylon 150 yards out. It’s a beautiful area and the fishing is amazing so long as you have the right conditions of clear water👍🏻

I attempted to get to this mark a week ago. Been planning it for ages. Walked along the top of the coastal path but the ferns and nettles were really overgrown, made it hard work. Attempted to climb down the cliff directly above the causeway but seemed really dangerous so gave up and fished Uwchmynydd instead - loads of Pollock on the lures

Dave Williams sorry to hear that you didn't make it down, like most of the marks I fish, it is pretty sketchy. Good job there's plenty of good fishing around that area. You could try mackerel hill, it has much easier access. Thanks for the comment and tight lines!

i've seen them take sandeels off the surface, at St.Abb, during the day but i've never caught a pollock at night. Sounds like a worthy challenge for next season :-)

A few people talking about the ground, I've spearfished around the rock and might be able to offer a few insights from under the waves... - The East side is shallow and full of boulders - lots of micro-pollock, wrasse and the odd tiny bass. - The West side - closest to the South-end, the water can reach about 16 meters deep, I've seen bass on the corner but not much else, on the North-end it gets shallow with huge boulders, it seems very still and lifeless there, I wouldn't fish it. - The South side is most interesting, there are a series of deep ledges, emanating away from the rock, I've seen large pollock patrol along these with the odd bass, you'd be best off fishing a minimum of 6 meters deep or deeper. All in, it's a very disappointing spot, at least for spearfishing. The distance you have to walk combined with the danger of getting there, it's not worth it. There are much better spots on the Llyn, especially for big pollock.

Thanks for the insight, it's pretty much what I thought after chucking a load of lures in but good to be confirmed, although we landed no bass. (not that we were fishing for them) it's good to know that they're there for the next time we make the 6 hour drive from the north east :-)

Whats the ground like there? I would love to do some lure fishijg to target the bigger wrasse and pollock
@SlippyLimpets9 жыл бұрын
+Lewis Wilkinson The ground is rough on the west side, mixed on the east side ( we are fishing the east side in the vid) and deep & clean on the south side. The big wrasse we got where from the west side and pollock from the east. The wrasse take anything that's fished slowly, even metal lures!
@MrGreenslime7359 жыл бұрын
sorry for all the questions, But surely there would be more pollock on the west side than on the east? Rough ground usually scream pollock and wrasse, did you try and target them with weedless lures?
@SlippyLimpets9 жыл бұрын
+Lewis Wilkinson I fished with weedles SP's all day and I agree, there should have been but we caught way more pollock on the east side than the west. It could be different on another day.
