As soon as we stepped into Ainlapali village of Bheden block of Bargarh district, we could hear the sound of Mridanga from far away. It sounds like a veteran artist is playing it. When we went, we saw that a small child was doing ‘Riyaz’ (practice) with great dedication.
For a while we could not believe it but it was true that at such a young age, this little artist plays every beat of the Mridanga. With the little fingers of his hands, he plays the Mridanga in such a way that anyone would be stunned to see him.
Laxmikant is not only good at this art but also he could speak lot of slokas without error. He is particular in his study also.
This little artist‘s name is Laxmikant Barik and he is just five years old. He has been just started going to Anganwadi School in his village. Her Mother Suruchi Barik says” He is not very naughty as other children use to be in their child hood. Though he likes to study but mostly he loves to play Mridanga. Even if his father and grandfather were not there, he use to play Mridanga and asks me to see”.
“When he comes from the Anganwadi center, I use to practice this. He saw us playing this Mridanga. My father’s elder brother was a Guru of ‘Rangeen Kirtan’.
My Brothers are also become the guru of the “Gahak Bahak”in Kirtan (A folk art).
I used to learn from my brothers and my uncle. He saw me and tried to learn, so my brother and my uncle start teaching him as well”. His father Sukadev Barik said.
“I have never seen anybody playing Mridanga from such a tender age. I had never started playing this from his age. I think he is God gifted and has a blessing of lord”. Sukadev added.
