A flash flood hits Castleton | Storm Babet hits the High Peak causing floods and disruption

The Peak District Viking

Жыл бұрын

Storm Babet hit the high peak in Castleton yesterday causing Peakshole water to burst its banks and flood the area. it is the highest water level seen in 40 years. It became a raging torrent flooding the village in several areas including Mill Bridge, Spital Bridge and the main road near the visitor centre.
Locals were having to sandbag their properties and use pumps to try and get rid of the water.
I went for a wander to capture this extreme weather and here is my film as I went to various locations around the village including the Devils Arse the source of Peakshole water.
A lot of the Peak District has been effected by this extreme rainfall.
Thoughts are with those affected and I hope they haven't suffered too much.

@@USERNAMEfieldempty Ummm! Well, yes, God created water, period, in various forms, including rain. We would get very thirsty & die without it! I guess certain folks don't consider that though in their cynicism. God also sent a Rainbow as His promise to the world! But, now, we need to keep our eyes on the ball! Which is the tragedy of the dear folks who have been affected by this terrible storm. That was the material point of my original Comment! Not for certain people to play some anti God blame game! Which I now see seems to be a pattern of certain Commentators' Replies under comments about Praying & God?? Praying for those dear folks certainly beats doing that! Cynicism: When someone smells the beautiful scent of lovely flowers...and looks around for coffin. Indeed!

@@USERNAMEfieldemptyI’m not sure, but you’ll probably find it isn’t God who’s neglected to dredge the rivers and keep the ditches clear, that’s the local Council. But it might be God who built housing estates on flood plains. No, wait, wasn’t that the short-sighted, some might say greedy, developers? I’m as confused as the next bloke to be honest.

Around Barnsley/South Yorkshire there's places flooded that don't normally flood, but all the usual places around here on the Dearne have been quite normal. Elevated sure... but certainly nowhere near as bad as I've seen in the last few years. Not much you can do to stop flash flooding, random fields and undulations getting full of a few feet, or just the run off so thick it itself is the flood. But clearly the councils around here, Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster and others down river must have kept a decent enough job on to stop the worst of it. Problem is, rather than fix the drains, culverts and water ways, it's far cheaper to just do nothing and throw your hands up and blame climate change.

I dont think this is caused by concreting over anything , judging by the deep gorge the river is flowing through, i think its been flowing along there before there was concrete. I think the issue is the massive amount of water that fell in a short time.

So sad to see people’s homes and businesses ruined. However not advisable to film beside and, even worse, on top, of a stone bridge with a raging torrent underneath. You would have been a gonner in seconds had the bridge collapsed this is why emergency services put warnings out.

Did any one get the government emergency alert. This happened along river Avon about 15 years ago. Devastation everywhere. Forced the lids of petrol statin storage , mixed with flood water. The aftermath of mud on everything.

Who will visit and claim they are interested first, Rishi or Keir? I’m guessing neither. If this was anywhere else in the world ££££ millions would be diverted to fund aid and we would be asked to text RAIN to donate £20.00 or FLOOD to donate £50.00. Our elected representatives represent no one but themselves.

Neither and Rishi‘s far more interested about protecting his money in big oil, and exacerbating these extreme weather patterns instead of addressing them, much less helping those who are living with the consequences, and it’s only gonna get worse.

Please tell me how much your local council spent on dredging the local rivers and canals, because there is your problem, silt build up is preventing rivers and canal holding water , and so it has nowhereto go but lower ground. . If your rivers and canals were just 3ft deeper you would not have this problem, so blame the EU for that when they banned dedging, by all member countries,, you only have to look at the german devastaion of last year.

Lot MPs seem doing lot finger pointing no warning etc, only after dramatic events can areas go in Red Zones. U cant predict the future weather or who is greater risk, unless flooding in past has occurred something our elected MP's need to understand rather jumping to conclusions. Ideally should be 4 tier warning Green = normal Yellow = some minor floods Red = serious risk Flooding Black = evacuated homes risk level on severe.

And remember… just because you have never come across it, or you don’t think it’s possible… doesn’t mean it isn’t. There’s an agenda going on to have you believe that climate change is a thing. I spent over 10 yrs looking into it and there are many many many climate scientists who will tell you that there is no emergency with nature. It’s being manipulated. Instead of laughing… investigate. Peace.
