@@markseleood6623 Hi Mark, Forgive me, as I'm old and a lil out of touch: I don't get your point, friend. My point was for those of us who were into AFOS back then, MTV was our outlet - unless we were lucky enough to catch them perform live and be up close. The emergence of KZbin brings captured moments to life for every fan to enjoy - not just those who were at that specific show. My point was not about feeling like an outsider, and F *anybody* who makes you feel that way! Thanks for your comment!

@jerryfiore58184 жыл бұрын
@@markseleood6623 Honestly, concerts were way less expensive back then, but without social media, we relied upon newspapers, magazines, the radio, MTV ad spots & fan clubs for our tour info. Plus, back then, bands like U2, Duran Duran & INXS all played the larger of what are now smaller arenas (by comparison to today's 5,000+ seat venues). The absolute best was finding out a band you loved was in town, then going at the last moment and getting good seats or standing close to the stage at a smaller venue! I must've done that a hundred times, easily! In my life, I've seen exactly 370 concerts - ah, the memories! While I never saw Neil Young, I did see The Alarm! My biggest regret, Mark? That I wasn't into taking pictures back in the 80's! From '83 to '88, I went to 217 concerts, hung out / partied with many bands. I knew the promo reps with all the major labels and got oodles of free vinyl, posters & tickets. I had a great life for 5 years! Thanks for your kind reply to this old man!

Paul Reynolds (guitarist) joined the band in 1979, when he was 17. He replaced the original guitarist Willie Woo. He left the band in 1984. In 2003, he rejoined the group for an episode of VH1's Bands Reunited. Before the performance, he was interviewed about why he left the band; he claimed that he was too young for the "rock 'n' roll lifestyle" and that he was exhausted from all of the performances. In early 2018 he rejoined the original lineup for their first new album since 1984's, Ascension.

Where would this song ever be without Paul's guitar style and creatively composed little parts, it's like a second vocal line it's so pretty, he really made the bands' sound work so well in the early days. Great band.
@anodyne579 ай бұрын
Just me speaking, but the guitar was the first "line" that I was following. Even if the vocals did hold their weight as a smart melodic counterpoint, it was really the guitar (and to a lesser extent the synths) that WERE the sound of AFOS's songs. It's what set them apart from everyone else at the time. Certainly not the drums (nothing against this particular drummer, it's just that every 80's band of this ilk seemed to fall back on the same basic head-jerking beat.)

Brings back so many memories from the 80's. Who would've thought back then that their singers hairdo eventually would be adorned by a future president of America.

I heard this song on the radio when I came to United States from eastern Europe in 1983 at the age of 14. I remember thinking to my myself: "what I cool song! What a cool country!" Hahaha. I still feel that way!!!!

You can't get no better than the 80's. I mean the hair bands, new age, country or whatever. The 1980' was it!!!

That guitar is pretty awesome, no doubt. But let's give a little love to that bass line. Pretty solid groove going on there -- makes the spare guitar possible.

Arguably the coolest music ever created and recorded. Lucky kids in the audience. Lucky to have this video to one day inspire similar music and creativity.

I was born in 1964 and grew up rockin and rolling until I heard my first Devo song and it was then that I was reborn into New Wave. I will forever love both genres and the music that came from them. Thanks for making my life great!!!

Pauls style of using effects as instruments is yet another reason i got into music. I was only a few years behind them. I remember these days vividly.

Yeah but these guys did pioneer the use of drum machines. There's a really good interview with them - all four of them - out there somewhere and they talk about it.
@simfaithguitar17 жыл бұрын
TheThirdMan agreed. I had two of their albums. was probably the only guy in the area who did.

It's funny: in some ways I measure a band's worth by its lack of success. You only know that they are pushing the boundaries if they have a few failures behind them. These guys did but they never really gave up which says a lot of positive things.

There are so many comments about the guitar player....and rightfully so! His rhythm playing in this song is pretty cool. The string scratches he does.....I've been playing guitar since mid 80s and I've never seen someone do that as an integral part of a song. I've listen to a lot of guitar oriented music in my life and that's saying something.
