A following sea can be dangerous

The series of short movies are designed to the support the eBooks called "The Mariner Safety Series" (www.boatnames.com.au/mariner-safety-series), which deliver, simple and practical safety messages to small boat owners in Australia.
This one explains the movement of water in waves, and why boats behave so differently going into the waves (head sea) and going in the same direction as the waves (following sea). 

The safety message is: don't go down the face of a following wave, stay behind it.

Exactly right! This is how I navigated the Columbia River Bar for years. Let's just state what "unstable" means. It means a roll over, and I've seen it happen. You mentioned it, but I want to reiterate it. Power, power, power! You must have the power to outrun a following wave. If not, and it breaks, two things will happen. Roll over or a wave over the stern. Either way you're swimming. The graphics were great!

Following seas are always more dangerous, all it takes is for the stern to be lifted by a wave behind you, which drives the bow into the trough. Look for a video showing a boat pitch-poling in Jupiter Inlet last year.

Find another way home isn't an option, trail something like lines or some thing that will "brake" your forward motion. The real reason following seas are dangerous is when the wave is pushing on the transom of your vessel, you'll be pushed forward fast as the wave, and you will not be able to steer, because you need water passing around the rudder to steer. Water will pass under the boat from stern to bow, in a following sea, if your going slow enough.

Wrong. Following seas are dangerous because they can swamp your boat. As long as your rudder is in the water you will have steering. Boats are designed to take waves head on, not from the transom. Depending on the size of your boat, you can also capsize

My father and I watched a 65' vessel (Mary Jane) 1986 bodega bay at seal beach , the entrance to the bodega harbor capsize after surfing the face of a 16'er pitching 17 people in the sea 9 we're pulled out alive 5 pulled out died, 4 we're never found. I haven't been on a chartered fishing boat since.

This is fascinating as I've noticed this kind of ridiculous commentary from all over this social media platform no matter where. In this case here and now we have proof of what I'm saying being true. This clip is meant to help boaters save themselves, their passengers and the boat itself. This info is 100% correct and boaters like myself, in any size boat, who have been on the water from a novice to folks with decades of boating experience. So rather than acknowledge that this is good and true info that has and will continue to be used in the future... We have some hammerheads commenting that you don't like his voice?!? Are you people who make those comments as ignorant as you seem to be or do you work on it?? We don't give a rip about your opinions on this guys voice, it's what he's saying that matters. I'm sure, after hearing some of your voices they will sound much worse than the guy giving a lesson on boat handeling. Some people in here don't have the brainpower to to grasp the concept of what boating safety is... But a handful of fools here find it nessessary to let the world know you don't like his voice... If you boat does not have the power to follow the wave in and you attempt it you might end up getting your wings and providing the witnesses a fine view of you overturned boat being bashed about until the coast guard or somebody better equipped than you goes out to recover your corpse. You should either wait or go to another place that is not as exposed. No you won't spout wings. You will be dead and your boat smashed up.

Picture yourself surfing in a boat down the face of a large wave you know what's going to happen to the boat it's going to turn 90° to the water and Pitch everyone in the water you want the wave to go underneath you kind of hit the gas as you go down the backside of it and don't get caught in the next one behind you got to be up and down with the power and very experienced

Non sense video. You should take a day skipper course before making this video. Obviously "find another way home" is just a joke. Every boater knows the way home are limited by fuel, location of marina / ramp, and day time. the correct suggestion should be plan your trip, watch weather forecast before going out, weather condition should be suitable for type of boat you have. going a Zig zag pattern in following sea, feel and ensure your boat is able to handle the waves. reduce speed, let waves pass your boat, not riding on top of them. if all fail, turn you boat into wave, going slowly, and radio for help. "Find another way" will put yourself into more dangerous situation.
