I've read Russell's book "The Island at the Center of the World" three or four times, it's that good. Sadly I found and bought it at JFK airport as I was leaving NYC. Reading the book on the trip back to LA had me back in 17th Century Manhattan and cursing the fact that I hadn't found the book when flew in! NYC through the eye of Shorto is a sight to behold.

I would like to add that the Netherlands in those days only had one million inhabitants doing their best to dominate the world economy and being a superpower in East Asia. So, the policy was in principle not to take land but work with fortified coastal trading posts. There were no people to occupy or even defend large overseas territories. As it was, it was a miracle that the Dutch could hold Indonesia for so long. All other attempts (New Netherlands in north america and Brazil, South Africa, the East coast of India, Sri Lanka, Taiwan) all failed. Only Surinam and some small islands in the Carribean were in possession as they were never really contested. The Dutch knew what imperial overstretch was. In addition to that, they also had to defend their homeland against the English, the French and some German states all the time. As the Dutch Republic was a revolutionairy state that was filthy rich and extremely protestant, it had many enemies.

Yes, it was a 'miracle' that the Dutch held onto Indonesia so long, but most of the miracle was in the barrel of a gun and unbelievably brutal actions (refer: Max Havelaar). European colonialism was 'miraculous' in general - it was even more of a miracle that England could dominate and control such a huge country and population as India! Or that such a place as Portugal had such force of domination over their worldwide colonies. I can never get my head around it!

But the story ended didn't it? The English took it and renamed it New York. Finis. How can the series go on? It's true that winners always get to write the history books, but I still think the story could be retold from the point of view of the people from whom the Dutch and English took the land from those already living there (with a dubious 'deed of sale'), their perspective, their losses or gains. This English/Dutch perspective by Shorto is only one, the white, male colonial story. The views & rights of the enslaved that they brought with them would also add understanding about that neglected but very significant group of immigrants also.

Russell's book is really good- so much info about early New York! Fascinating story of early times in America. Can you do a video history on the very northern area of Manhattan, called by the Indians who lived there in the 1600 and 1700s (and a little longer) "Shorakkpoch"? The geography and area is now a park (Inwood) and very beautiful. Also the site of the whirlpool called "spuyten duyvil." A term still used today for the area near where the East River meets the Hudson and Riverdale. Love to see this one! Many thanks.

exactly, whether dutch or english, its people would eventually want independence, and it would come with fight (though raising taxes because of wars all over the globe against the french is less of a probability with the dutch americans...). though, under the Dutch this american revolution would come at much less human losses. But with an eying english neighbour, you wouldn't want to an american revolt in just new Holland; the British would roll over in the blink of an eye ...the opposite; an american revolution in english america and the ducth americans continuing under WIC or dutch governance is less likely.

At that time there were probably more valuable materials in Suriname (cotton, cacao, sugar, snakewood, coffee) than in New Amsterdam (beaver furs and tobacco). The Dutch also could keep part of Moluccas and therefor a monopoly in the trade of nutmeg.

Secondly to be a Dutch citizen doesn't mean you are pro imperialistic. Yes I'm glad you searched the Dutch word for it but rather then look to the past we must look to the future. I believe Indonesia has a duty to save the Indo-Dutch native languages Petjoh and Javindo. Also, Indonesia should apologize for the crimes your nation committed when it occupied Dutch New Guinea. Dishonouring your treaties and all in the good name of anticolonialism. Both the RMS and the Papuans must be given an option. Excellent series about the excellent work of Russell Shorto. But for accuracy, the "Dutch Republic" at the time was NOT then the same as "Holland" (as we hear from 01:30 on ). And not now either. Our country, once the Dutch Republic, is now called "The Netherlands" in English, or "The Kingdom of The Netherlands", more formally. Although habitual in the UK and USA, the term "Holland" refers only to 2 of the 12 provinces that constitute The Netherlands, North and South Holland. In casual use, maybe, but not a historically accurate text like this .

There is no Nieuw-Nederland there. That was called "Nederlandsch-Indië" (Dutch East Indies) or simply "De Oost" (The East). What I can say about Batavia is that it was founded by Jan Pieterszoon Coen who also is known for a genocide of chieftains on Banda, because they had traded with the bloody Redcoats.

Drumsgoon one could say the Dutch colonists or better said traders influenced trade between different ethnicities done on a global scale. The Dutch India company was powerful in the Oceans and seas long before people surfed on the net.

I encourage you to read Shorto's book, "The Island at the Center of the World." He brings to light information newly translated in the past few decades. He makes a convincing argument that Van der Donck and his contemporaries had much influence on the direction of the future USA, and that he should rightly be considered a founding father.
