A Forgotten Marvel Fighting Game | Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects | Retrospective Review

In 2005, Marvel and EA signed a multi game deal with EA to produce a series of Marvel fighting games. The result was Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects. Marvel Nemesis included characters such as Daredevil, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Venom, and Human Torch against original EA characters named, "The Imperfects." Marvel Nemesis received both poor critical and financial success, causing it to be the only game to release within the Marvel/EA contract. But was it really that bad though? In this video, we'll go through every detail of Marvel Nemesis and discuss where it went wrong, as well as what it did right.
Always Nerdy is a KZbin channel dedicated to all things nerdy and Marvel, with a focus on Marvel Gaming properties such as Marvel's Avengers and the Marvel Ultimate Alliance series. Retrospectives are a new series I've started, so more are on the way as well!

Big facts...but me and my friends would...we used have 1 to 5 dollar matches so pretty much a weekend fight club...shit would go down on Friday nights into Saturday..I remember when I realized they added continuity to the game mid fight when I web yanked a car and tossed it quick as hell at Venom...like that stopped the whole fight for about 5 secs..like everyone was like ooOoooooo yoo...hold tf up... me: ohhh yeahhhh! it's spider man!! I started throwing everything at my friend..cars, light poles, cans, mailboxes, a stray dog. Then madd fists. I didn't give af and ended it with a web swing kick to a rage finish for a legendary spiderman comeback.. im talking damn near no health! Added with the flute sounding theme song when the battle picked up...and it was just so epic!! Felt like a comic book Hahaha I believe it was over 65 dollars on the line..so this was a big fight haha and with spidermans quote you know what we call that? we call that a web slinging ass kickin'..... everyone just lost it hahaha super hot fire crew style lmao..So yeah only that crew remembers...anyone else nah...😆 🤣 but damn...man good times...😔

The character designs, the atmosphere, and the tone of the story was very immersive. i loved how dark/creepy both the game's aesthetic and the story were Especially in the game's intro where the city is almost in ruins while you can see the Avengers being defeated so easily when they are supposed to earth's mightiest heroes just seeing Cap's shield on a wall with no sign of him, Punisher's banner and weapons on the ground with no sign of him and HULK getting tossed from a building and losing his form like this...really sets the vibe of the game The art style is also uncanny somehow, in the Versus menu you can see all the characters with different poses but the thing is that instead of being fancy to indicate that they are heroes, they look ordinary? mixed with these realistic features on the clothing and their faces

If I recall, Marvel ACTUALLY does own the rights to the Imperfects. It was discovered when an Artist for "Marvel Universe vs Avengers" accidently put the Imperfect Hazmat in a groupshot instead of Hazmat from Avengers Academy. I think that since the game was contract work with a copyright, any new characters automatically went to the copyright holder and not the game publisher. If EA wanted to own the characters, then they would've had to produce something involving them in a standalone product prior to Marvel Nemesis

I see. I was actually going to comment that if EA does own the characters, I wouldn't mind seeing a new game starring them. I heard that they actually wanted to a story driven single player game but were contractually required to make a fighting game. They could make a more story driven game with the Imperfects, flesh them out more. I actually did really like their designs and backstories. If Marvel owns the copyright though, then that's too bad. We'll probably never see them again.

@Oldschool1943

"EA-created "Imperfect" comic book characters, oddities as The Wink, Niles Van Roekel and Brigade -- gamers hated the game's unbalanced fighting system, as it was clear that some characters had a far bigger advantage than others. On top of that, bad graphics and poor AI bugs plagued the release. Shortly thereafter, EA and Marvel's partnership fizzled, coming to an official close in 2008 without seeing the release of any further games. This wasn't for a lack of trying it would appear, as earlier this week, Siliconera ran across newly released concept art and a short video for a follow-up that was never released, with only the occasional glimpse of it surfacing in various gaming media outlets over the years. By looking at the concept screens and video clip released by one of the EA Chicago artists involved with the Marvel project, we can glean a few details details about the potential sequel to "Nemesis." Judging from one concept screen, it appears that the game featured a Campaign mode, similar to the one featured in "Nemesis." Even more intriguing is the mode sitting next to it, titled "What If?" which may have mixed things up significantly between the Marvel characters and the batch of Nemesis freaks, or even possibly presenting alternate realities based on the classic Marvel series of the same name. In addition, a My Collection option appears on the main menu, presenting the possibility that characters and maybe even virtual comic books could be unlocked over the course of the campaign, for the player to root through in their own free time. Two more screens illustrate the likelihood that the game would have stuck with the 3D combat of the original "Nemesis," including the ability to run around freely on a stage while holding down a trigger to keep "locked on" to an enemy, so all attacks could be focused on him or her. Other offensive controls included the ability to mix up weak and strong strikes, as well as item interaction (possibly with items to pick up within the stage, such as crates or lamp posts to be used as projectiles) and running tackles. One other notable feature in the gameplay is the addition of a Super Power Modifier, which would have probably taken advantage of each character's ability. For instance, Spider-Man would have been able to use his webbing to some capacity, while Captain America could easily throw his shield to some degree, or maybe even use it in a super-charging attack. And who knows what kind of damage Hulk or Wolverine could have wreaked. In addition to Captain America, Hulk and Spider-Man appearing in the screenshots and video, the lesser known US Agent also appears as a playable option, hinting at a potentially larger pool of characters to choose from than the original "Nemesis." Indeed, the sole trailer for the game from 2007 showed Spidey facing off against Doctor Doom, while Cap went toe-to-toe with the Juggernaut. Beyond the screens and video, a commenter on the Siliconera story claiming to have been an EA game tester who worked on this particular project bolsters our read on the screenshots. He describes the game as taking a "psuedo-sandbox" approach to the gameplay, featuring interactive, destructible environments, civilians running around as you battle other characters and and an open city to explore. This is further supported by another video from 2007 showing gameplay footage while the developers brag about "every square inch" of the environment being destructible, damage appearing on the characters and working hard to emulate look of Marvel's comic book offerings. Again, it's all concept-stage art and footage, but you can see where EA Chicago was doing its best to improve upon "Nemesis." It's incredibly unlikely we'll ever find out, however, leaving the fate of the Imperfects -- whom Marvel owns the rights to as part of the original partnership deal -- in limbo." this is the official report for the game so what u "recall is inaccurate" ea's created characters the imperfect is what they own just like nba street's drake, Stretch and etc just like the other ea's created characters like def jam fighting series like d-mob and more. so stop ur bullshit

What you said about the imbalance of characters was spot on. It was the best part of the game imo. Wolverine has always been my favorite Marvel character so using him was a challenge but what was always more important to me was that it was accurate. Spider-Man can throw a car because Spider-Man can. Wolverine can't. I also loved that it was like a free roam type of fight. Not left to right. It made the fights accurate to how they were supposed to look. Man EA used to make great games. Fight Night, Def Jam, this, NBA Street series. It all went to crap when the PS3 era began.

Ultimate Spider-Man would be an awesome game to do a retrospective on. Honestly, I played that wayy more than Spider-Man 2 the game since the use 3D Comic Shading (I think thats what they called it ) helped make it feel like you were -in- the comic book as well as how the cutscenes used comic panels to further illustrate that aesthetic which really set it apart from the movie games that came out at that time.

Dlc is incredibly increased a smgame's longevity. Back in the day, sure you'd unlock the base roster, but then the game dies in a year, and then the company pumps out a sequel in the next year. Attention spans are worse now, especially when there are so many fighting games on the market now. Final thing to add, is how things are more expensive for the companies, but the games themselves remain the same price. You don't have to buy dlc anyways.
@phabiorules
@phabiorules 2 жыл бұрын
I believe that DLC vs unlockables isn't really an argument. DLC is content that was created after a game's launch while unlockables are obviously already in the game. I think the reason we don't really see unlockables in fighting games anymore is due to how much the competitive scene is rising. In the past, the biggest demographic were casuals with some competitive players. Now however, there are a lot more competitive gamers or players in the middle. For that reason, I believe they stopped having unlockables because the competitive players want to test all the characters out and find the best strats, not go through the story mode or do miscellaneous tasks. I also think online play has made unlockables more irrelevant. In the past, unlockables encouraged longevity because it rewarded you for playing the game more. Now that online is the played mode in fighting games, you get rewarded by rising through the ranks and fighting better skilled players.

The part about not recognizing the voice actors but ultimately not needing the big names to pull great performances is so true. The voice actor for Niles Van Roekel sounds so familiar to me I would have sworn he was in other works especially with that "evil scientist" voice, but looking him up I found a) he also voices Johnny Ohm, which is awesome and b) he voiced Nappa, Nail, Spopovich, the World Tournament Announcer, Shin, Kibito Kai and King Cold in Ocean Group's dub of DBZ, so I mean, if it wasn't obvious from him being both Roekel and Ohm, the dude has range.

Yo I just stumbled upon you this video and I think you did a great job. This was pretty nostalgic for me to watch and a great breakdown of the game and it’s strengths and weaknesses that I didn’t notice as much when I played it as a kid. I added a bunch of your vids to my ‘watch later’ and I’m really gonna dig into the retrospective series. Could you please share the outro music you used here? It really caught my ear and I was disappointed to find that it’s not in the description. Thanks, keep up the good work. You got a new fan in me.

The cutscenes remind me of Sin City where they use live action actors but make it look like a comic putting style over substance which that movie coincidently was released in 2005.

This video has definitely brought a smile to my face cuz I used to be obsessed with this game when I was a kid with a childhood friend and whenever Spider-Man made his first appearance in the story mode. Beating one alien enemy after another & only making him out by his fist & leg kicks just filled me with excitement when he showed up & given the fact that his costume in game looks very inspired by the Tobey Maguire costume with the silver webs and the eyes very slightly along with Venom being included it made for great childhood conversations of what Venom could have been &/or looked like for Spider-Man 3 since the movie did not come out yet. (Plus as another interesting tidbit from me, the game also gave me a lot of vibes for what a Killer Instinct 3 game could have been like at the time before the 2013 Xbox reboot, since the human torch and a few resemble the cast you would see in a Killer Instinct game along with the daily bugle representing the iconic 3D rooftop stages)

I always remembered in the back of my mind a marvel fighting game that for the life of me I couldn't remember the name of. I didn't even realize this was it until you got to the part with Elektra at the daily bugle, I only vaguely remember that map and it being my favorite one. Thanks man for helping me😂

45:20 there isnt a single fighting game where everyone is perfectly balanced. the top tiers only become a problem if there is a lack of counters, options, or viable characters that can realistically compete.

Least the Amazon Chick could actually get COUNTERPLAYED as all of her Projectiles are heavily telegraphed and either remain ground only or otherwise going in a straight line. THEY HURT but least they are a rather easy projectile to dodge.

This game just straight has characters that are worse versions of others. No real reason to play guys like wolverine, thing, and Elektra. Atleast low tiers like Roll, Gigas, etc have a unique playstyle. Wolverine......just pulls some claws out for a damage buff.

I wouldn’t mind a reworked version of this game. Making the story more engaging with a larger scope, some more diverse gameplay, incorporating a larger cast of characters and more focus on the Marvel universe, making the Imperfects and their leader more mysterious and straightforward villains with more conflict with the Avengers themselves. I wouldn’t mind having the final battle Iron Man vs The Creator(I can never remember his name)
