Americans buy/sell unfermented Cider that is pretty much just unfiltered apple juice. Its more common than "alcoholic" cider over here, and is pretty much a staple of the autumn season. Just like we have non-alcoholic Egg Nog for the winter months too.

I love the talk right at the beginning about Americans being uncultured in the ways of cider. As an American, yes, most of us think cider is "apple juice," but in terms of alcohol, cider (hard cider) is like my favorite.

Apple juice is filtered juiced apples thats typically clear, apple cider is made from pressed apples and is typically cloudy, and a popular opinion is that during prohibition (when alcohol was illegal in America)people would buy apple cider and let it ferment in their homes. The law and people in general needed a way to distinguish between the two types of alcoholic and non alcoholic cider, birthing the term "hard cider" and us having both types of cider

To add to that slightly Apple Cider in the US is typically either sparkling or made with cinnamon and meant to be consumed warm. Hard Cider is alcoholic. I’m from Washington State (Not DC) originally a state known for its apples and I can confirm we have some damn good cider (both kinds).

From experience the "American accent" is sort of a thing and if you watch some accent coaches or a video with many EU accents that rarely play with someone from the US they stick out quite a bit. Typically the Midwest accent is the one people refer to as the accent with things like Valley Girl, Boston/New Jersey, Southern and "Fargo" accents known to come from the US but not THE accent. Kinda like the media here uses a posh accent for the English when the country as a whole has a dozen or so accents.

We do have regional differences American English as a whole does sound rather particular compatible all other English speaking countries. Enough so that Canadians, even as our neighbors and fellow North Americans, generalize us under one accent type like most of the world does. As Americans its easier for us to tell apart because someone from Louisiana will sound different than people from California, New Jersey, and even Wisconsin. The way the world views our accents is really thanks to media, news, and pop culture's portrayal of it over the years.

BTW cider is actually an alcoholic product of apples and sometimes pears' fermentation. One said that is just apple juice without filtration.

The catch-all term 'Cider' in the U.S. generally refers to unfiltered fruit juices. Apple cider, in particular, contains yeast and pulp that is generally filtered out in Apple juice and which results in slight fermentation taking the normally sweet taste of apple juice and turning it a bit more sour/bitter. Apple juice is clear, apple cider is cloudy/murky.

Actually soccer was a term born in England back in the 1800's that made its way to America, prohibition forced us to differentiate between alcoholic and non alcoholic cider so hard cider was born, and there/they're/their isn't American its English so all English speaking countries are taught those
