American Prisoners of war during the revolutionary war were often either put to work as forced labor, sent to Canada, or kept on prison ships/prison hulks, floating just off of a harbor. Conditions were often terrible there, and those who died there were either thrown overboard or buried in shallow graves. British and Hessian POWs were mostly put to work in prison towns, or stowed in whatever building they could find that was suitable as a prison. Certainly treated better than the American POWs in British custody.
