Tbh and IMO, I have another theory. I think the movie was taking place in Jacks personal hell. Why? When Minnie dies, Jack was so grief stricken that he commits suicide and goes to hell for killing Minnie for fame. The guy in the skeleton costume is the devil and he is in the audience watching Jacks hell like a theatre show. Most of the people on the show are sinful and connected with the occult in some way. There is more signs but I'll leave that up to you to explore

Traditional folklore says that, if a person makes a contract with the Devil for Earthly goods, the Devil will come to claim his payment seven years later. The opening montage shows Jack at the Grove and is time-stamped 1969. His wife died in 1976. Seven years later.

And in the Irish version of that story, the mans name is Jack, and he is visited by a man named Nick. He is granted a wish, on the condition that seven years later, Nick will return to collect his due. When the time comes, Nick returns, taller, thinner and darker haired than Jack remembers. He begs for another wish, and tricks Nick into accepting. Nick states he will have another seven years, and the next time, he must collect his due. The second time he tricks Nick again, and assures him that the next time, he promises to repay the debt. The final time Nick arrives, he is the tallest, darkest, most ominous man Jack has ever seen. He attempts to trick Nick again, and succeeds once more. When Jack dies, he is refused entry to heaven, due to his trickery and bargaining with Nick, who the Angel tells him was the devil in disguise. Jack is sent to the gates of hell, but is also refused entry, due to the Devils fury with Jack not keeping to his side of the bargain, to give Nick his soul in return for the three wishes. Nick gives him a hollowed out turnip, and places an ember from hell in it to light it. He sends Jack to wander the bogs of Ireland forever more, where he becomes known as Jack O' Lantern, or will-o'-the-wisp, and he wonders to this day.

It really was Madeline communicating with Christou. She used the name Minnie because she knew Jack would just assume it’s Christou’s cheap bullshit if he said Madeline. By using her private nickname, she hoped Jack would listen. Abraxas killed Christou to ensure Madeline is not able to communicate with Jack. With no medium like Christou, Madeline is helpless to just stand there next to Jack, unable to tell him that the version of her he will see at the end of the movie is an illusion that will trick him into unleashing Abraxas into the minds of all the viewers. Madeline is the most tragic figure in the movie.

These arent my words, but a YT comment that i think explains everything perfectly: I think the head split was just an illusion but the Demon definitely ended everyone else, as the Skeptic was burned to a crisp but his suit was pristine, Gus was turned into a turntable and June was slumped over with damage to her neck. So I think the entire night was the Demon and the Cult finally getting what they wanted out of Jack. As the people in full costumes in the audience were Cult members (like the Skeleton and the Frankenstein's Monster). The way I seen the film was at first Minnie was trying to contact and warn Jack by making contact with Christu, then the Demon took out Christu as a way of stopping any warnings from Minnie getting through. Then June mentions how Lilly went into a fuge state a few days ago and was constantly talking about Jack in a familiar way, so I think ever since then the Demon was in constant full control of Lilly and playing pretend that it was a young girl, as it instinctively knows what camera is on them and follows it in-between each camera cut. There's also how Lilly reacts to the mass hypnotism, she's giggling and laughing the entire time asking "Why is Gus acting so silly?" ... that's because the Demon isn't falling for the hypnosis and it's genuinely confused as to what everyone else is supposed to be seeing. Lilly also knows the name of the random make up person who comes up to her during the break and she is able to know when even the backstage cameras are filming her. Theres also a ton of subliminal images of Minnie surrounding Jack, she appears in the mirror during one of the backstage segments, she faintly appears beside Jack when Christu is talking to Eddie's family, she appears in the occult items on stage, she also appears superimposed over Lilly during the hypnosisand conversation with the Demon, and then eventually behind Jack holding his shoulder. I think Minnie is trying to warn Jack about what's about to happen, as she still loves him, and realises that the deal Jack made "Amongst the Tall Trees" came at a price that will be taken in the form of everyone that he loves being taken from him, that's why his wife suddenly got an illness that she shouldn't have gotten and that's why June was also taken at the end, as the price for a deal with a Demon is always a twisted interpretation of the deal. During the hallucination at the end when Jack finally sees and talks to Minnie, Minnie says something like "Oh thank God, I didn't think they were going to let you see me!" ... I think the "They" she is referring to their is the Demon and the Cove Cult, but at some point during their conversation the Demon takes control of the hallucination again and then tells Jack to use the occult dagger. Which in turn completes not only the Abbraxis Cults ritual (as they exclusively used 13 year olds and Lilly was 13) and it fulfils Jack's contract with the Cove Cult, as he will be "No.1 in Late Night" but not as a famous presenter but as an infamous butcher! ... and by having the entire thing broadcast it also unleashes the Demon into the homes and lives of the viewers. and conversation with the Demon, and then eventually behind Jack holding his shoulder. I honestly wish we saw more scenes with the devil, but it definitely made good use with the little screen time he got.

It should also be brought up that when Haig hypnotized the audience and the viewers, Lilly asked, "Why is Gus acting so silly?" It was an indication that she wasn't hypnotized, so the demon was still within her even after she "reassured" the viewers that she was fine. Speaking of the cult that Lilly was a part of, it was stated that they bred humans for them to later sacrifice to Abraxus. Which only means that Lilly, being very young, was one of the children meant for the sacrifice. So, Abraxus only hyponotized Jack to acquire the sacrifice that was ultimately born for him. This realization hit me when the "So it is done" (what D'Abo said after making a sacrifice) was flashed between "End transmission" for a brief moment at the end of the film. Abraxus made Jack explore his inner demons just to meet its own end. Jack was not only a pawn for the audience, but also Abraxus.
@mickmath
@mickmath 8 ай бұрын
I haven't seen anyone bring up the fact that during the end sequence the entire audience is being hypnotized on the big wheel, calling into question how much of what we saw throughout the whole move was actually a hypnotization. That hypnotization could be what Abraxas used to subdue the entire audience (and you as the viewer) into watching the ritual in order to fall under their spell forever. That could be why at the very end, Jack is asking to be 'woken up' because he's just appeared in a reality he hopes is a hypnotization, but isn't.

That's well said. They broke the 4th wall in the film, where the host warned us to "turn your televisions off!" Giving fair warning. It's hard for me to articulate clearly, but the whole film felt very dark and "downlifting", where everyone dies, the host loses big time, and even the Christian man got his neck snapped. Then, the text "So it is done" is the closing line of the black mass (misse noir) in the Satanic Rituals published by Anton Lavey. So it's like the filmmakers are saying that the whole production was a black mass, which the film audience was part of.

On initial watching I assumed the lung cancer his wife got wasn't due to his deal with the devil but due to Jack's constant smoking as you see whenever he's not on air. Why do you think Jack was begging people to turn off their tvs towards the end? Why do you think you saw the demons face through the static in the tv? It’s literally said in the first minute of the film. The show does get cut off. It then goes to a “technical difficulties” graphic. You then see the demon’s face coming through the tv. It then goes back to the show. The audience is then hypnotized. That’s why we see Jack’s hallucination. How do we know we’re hypnotized? Because the show uses the same spinning spiral that Carmichael used to hypnotize everyone earlier. Except how it’s the much larger spinning game show wheel. Why do you think Jack kills Lilly? Why do you think Jack’s wife was trying so hard to communicate with him earlier and has her hand on his shoulder when Abraxas shows up? What did you think it meant when the demons face showed up through the static? You thought this was all just random shit? 😆 it’s basically spelled out for you.

Not everyone would get cancer from all the second hand smoke, but there would have been a percentage of “nonsmokers with lung cancer” who might have. I think your explanation of why Jack didn't get ultimate fame with his wife's death can be explained much more simply: That Jack, during whatever sort of ritual there was at The Grove, was told that there would be a sacrifice required, but wasn't told what that sacrifice would be. So when Minnie died, Jack *thought* that was the sacrifice, and was understandably actually heartbroken and guilt-ridden after that. But when his show continued to tank, even after her death, he was even more lost, and left the show for a while. (I posit that Minnie's death had nothing to do with his 'deal with the devil', but was just something that happened.) The *actual* sacrifice that would be required of Jack would be murdering someone on live television. The trick played by the demon was not about what or who the sacrifice was -- as I think it was never intended to be Minnie -- but what "ultimate fame" meant. In this case, it didn't mean that his show would be #1 forever, but that he would have the ultimate fame of someone like a serial killer. Also, I don't necessarily think that Abraxas was the demon who was part of this particular incident. The parapsychologist said she thought it was one of his minions, and even Lily never referred to him as Abraxas (as I recall), but only as "Mr. Wriggles" -- which is a more disturbing name as far as I'm concerned, lol.

I initially thought the whole ratings plummet after his wife's death to be a plot hole as well. Until my girlfriend blew my mind with her theory on it. The Devil wants you at a spiritual point of defeat. Where you are at the lowest point of your life. Only then does he know that you'll resort to what he wants in exchange for fame and fortune. It's a denouncement of one's faith and morality. In this instance, she also felt the guy in the crowd dressed as a skeleton was Satan. And he wanted the host of the show to be at his lowest point, the lowest moment of desperation and fear. This is actually what drives him to push for the possession. If he had been killing it in the ratings, he likely would've backed down at the psychiatrist's initial refusal to push forward with the whole thing. But because the knew this was his last chance, he couldn't and wouldn't take no for an answer. Which therefore created the opportunity for Abraxas to manifest and take over.

@DJHolte
@DJHolte 8 ай бұрын
This is where many interpretations start to fall apart, though. Bear with me for a moment here. The movie presents itself as a documentary-within-a-movie, with the footage coming from actual show tapes and behind the scenes tapes. So if the worm scene didn't really happen that way, how are we (as viewers of the movie) able to see the worms? They played back the videotape within the show and they weren't there. So what were we watching? Is it the movie's conceit that we, as viewers of the movie Late Night With The Devil, were also hypnotized? (Obviously, I'm not saying we were, in actuality, hypnotized, but that this is how the movie would explain that worm scene being visible to us.) And if that's the case, then perhaps it was the movie's intent to suggest that the viewers of the film were hypnotized for a lot of the rest of it -- including what we thought was the final reveal of the demon.

That is what is good about these movies. It could have been Abraxas even if it was hinted at it wasn't it was never confirmed either way.. Could have been a lesser demon. We don't know for sure. They just planted the idea in our head with one sentence.. Jack's sacrifice. Did he unintentionally sacrifice his wife or did she get cancer from 2nd hand smoke. Was his sacrifice him losing literally everything. His show, his sanity, his freedom. At first I was sure they took his wife from him. Then after reading coments and the ending with it seeming like if his wife was the cost then he sacrificed her life and everything else he loved. I'm leaning more towards the cost was that he got what he wanted but now he no longer has a show, he killed the girl so he definetly has no freedom, and he probably went insane. His life though not death was the cost. I'm not 100percent though

@@robbyroba The demon never says who he is. But it wouldn’t matter if he did because he could just lie. This movie obviously took a lot of inspiration from the Exorcist and remember in the Exorcist Pazuzu lies and says they’re literally Satan. So there’s really no way to show or prove who the demon is. Though June never explains why she thinks it is a lesser demon, the only thing I can think is that this demon doesn’t seem very powerful to her. Remember how distressed the demon was when it found itself restrained and asking “why are you doing this?”. Well that clearly turned out to be bullshit. June found out her Latin chants suddenly dont work. And we then see just how powerful this demon is. If it can literally melt a human effortlessly like a wax candle, I’m guessing restraints weren’t actually that scary to it. I imagine it was just pretending to be lesser than it was. Had it shown June what it could do, June would have likely never allowed it on a tv show. Also, I really dislike the whole “Abraxas” thing. They literally mention in the movie that Abraxas is a Gnostic deity. He was “demonized” by early Christians for the same reason that all other contemporary gods were; Christians considered them a threat and wanted to convert their followers. I’d rather the filmmakers just invent a name for a demon and not use one that we know is just an example of one religion being literally demonized by another.
@robbyroba
@robbyroba 8 ай бұрын
Other websites basically denote Abraxas and Wriggles are two different entities. Either they are factually incorrect, or they are not the same. Besides, this reads more like speculation based on how an unrelated movie has a demon lying about its identity. I'm going off what the film itself says, which, for all intents and purposes, seems to imply they are not the same.

Loved the skeleton bit. It's inclusion in the ritual scene indicated that it was his skeleton in the closet. Also, I was under the impression that while his wife was the sacrifice, he didn't know she would be the sacrifice when he did the ritual. I also think he was given a chance at redemption there with June. He could have stopped everything, but gave into greed. The closeness between the two was great chemistry. I don't think there was any infidelity, but if he had stopped it, she would have been a second chance at happiness. I think the scene near the end with Millie dying in bed was another indication of this. She was not happy with him in that moment. It pained her to see him give up that second chance.

As a former atheist and now an Orthodox Christian, I like how there are some aspects of the movie that have an accurate basis in Christian theology and philosophy (although a big portion of the movie consisted of the typical over-exaggerated showy demon scares). The cult leader that we see on the tape that is played during the show, mentions how the demon he worships teaches them that there is "no good, or evil, only what we desire, and the power to get what we desire". This is a very accurate depiction of the main lie of the devil towards humans. The point of Satanism is not to worship Satan, but to make people regard themselves as gods, and to become slaves of their own desires, while thinking of themselves as kings. The point is complete pride and power for oneself, with no regard for other people, let alone for God. The sinful human becomes its own ultimate authority, but can never carry the spiritual weight and responsibility of such a task. When a soul does that to itself, it unknowingly (and somewhat knowingly) distances itself from God and falls into hell. Its also interesting to see how throughout the movie, the demon uses guilt, sexual passion, and greed as tools to deceive and manipulate the characters. My only complain regarding the above aspects of the movie is this: Most paranormal movies (for example Talk to me, and Hereditary), don't involve the characters using spiritual warfare against the evil entity, even when that entity is confirmed to be a demon. In this movie, Gus attempts to invoke the name of Christ against the demon, while holding his cross. However, the demon makes quick work of him by snapping his neck. This does not make sense in the Christian world. The universe of Late Night with the Devil seems to be one where biblical demons are real, and therefore the Christian faith is true. But according to Christian faith, the only thing that can save us from demons is God and His angels. We are but cattle in front of the demons, but the demons are lower than worms in front of God. They can rally, and scream, and get angry, and complain, but in the end they must obey Him. "If God is with us, who can be against us."

I think the reason why the demon was able kill anyone using the Christian faith was that it was last minute. Before this, they did not have faith . Kind of how someone think they can deny Jesus and only try to claim Him when there is danger or their life is about to end. I think it is possible to be saved at the last minute but would be the only one to decide if it genuine.

There was a great Brendan Fraser move called Bedazzled where his character keeps making deals with the devil that appear granted at first, but then there’s always an unpleasant catch the devil threw in. That’s how I felt about Jack’s ratings decline even after his wife’s death. Sure they were great at the beginning, but maybe he wasn’t specific enough in how he worded his deal.
@JediJuniper92

I interpreted it at first that Jack had intentionally sacrificed his wife, someone he loved, for eventual fame. However, Madeline’s ghost not coming back for vengeance but rather to try to save her husband from the horror that is about to happen is also a tragic take. And Jack may have even been romantically involved with June just to manipulate her and make sure she brought Lily to the show, since June wasn’t 100% into the idea of bringing her onto the show.

What if the dagger scene at the end is yet another flashback, showing us that Minnie didn't really die from the cancer, but from Jack somehow pulling the plug on her? If so, did he really do it to spare her the continued suffering, or to spare himself? And making him relive that past experience in a dreamlike state is what allowed Abraxis to manipulate Jack into killing Lilly, too.

3:41 - _"If the Grove is supposed to ensure your success and it requires sacrifice, why did Jack's ratings start falling _*_after_*_ his wife died?"_ .. My answer to that Q is that in the movie, the Grove grew spiteful that Jack was *content* at being #2 to the other rival show, which didn't sit well inside the deeply infantalisingly spiteful emotional invertebrates ( * _i.e. the Grove_ ), because he was for too long enjoying the benefits of grove membership *without sacrifice* .. so they, the Grove, covertly organised the wife's lung cancer *as a punishment* to remind him that nothing in life is free! The wife's murder was not the exchange for greater success.. the wife's murder was *a debt* from which they *drew even* regardless of his show's #2 rating. And the reason the ratings started to fall was not only because of the hiatus, but also because he was naturally deflated and started telling guests to leave the show, etc

A little trivia: About seven minutes into the movie, they show a fake ratings list for the 1976-77 TV season from all the networks, to show how much the main character Jack's show is struggling in comparison to Johnny Carson. They show The Tonight Show at #3 and his show far lower on the list. I had to Google a real life list out of curiosity, because I know All in the Family wouldn't have been #1 in 1976, as they showed in the movie. It was past its peak popularity at that point. Nielsen's top 30 for 1976-77, according to Wikipedia, lists Happy Days at #1, All in the Family #12, and the Tonight Show, wherever it landed, didn't even make the top 30. I looked at a variety of years and decades...it never did.

Great review. I saw the movie a week ago in Culver City, around 3pm in the afternoon. I was the only one there. I loved it. I was the only one in the audience movie theatre, watching a movie about an audience putting on a late night show. Funny though, at the end of the movie, after staying and watching the credits finish, the dim lights turned on and that's when I felt the most scared, cause in my own head I thought, imagine if I looked back and behind me, somewhere in the empty theatre was the skeleton masked guy, or the devil eating popcorn. I proceeded to leave quickly for fear of the doors being locked in the room. My mind was playin' tricks on me, and I attribute it to this well done movie. I was born in 1972, so as a kid I used to watch "Joker's Wild", "That's INcredible", and "Ripley's Believe it or Not"....... I've seen "The Exorcist", and "The Omen" when it was released. This movie really did seem legit stylized. It took me to a time when I was young and fear of the unknown was really strong.

Dude! My first time watching you. I love your breakdown and analysis of this film. You have a commanding and authoritative voice that demands attention, but...but...your hands are driving me crazy! Cut down on the caffeine! I'm still subbing tho, you are worth listening to.

This movie really blew me away and it's also amazing that the filmakers made it as if Jack still could be redeemable by in a way making as if Gus was possessed by an Angel to just try and get Jack to stop what he is doing with the devil being that Leo guy as a last attempt.

Abraxas being behind the Minnie thing doesn’t make much sense imo. June specifically says that the demon can only manifest through Lilly and Lilly alone. Christou said the spirit needs to talk to Jack and that Jack needs to accept. Jack of course didn’t accept. If it were Abraxas, why wouldn’t he just say whatever it is he wanted to say to Jack? I think it’s much more likely that it really was Madeline, who went by Minnie to show Jack it was really her and not Christou conning him, and was likely going to try and warn him about Abraxas.

"Giving up" say a family member for your success is insane. I know in many fables of old, people got "tricked" by their greed. They end up getting their riches, their successes, their desires, but in the end, they lose a lot more than they ever gained. It shows that greed, making deals with evil, and other variables that can end up destroying you and your family are never worth the end. This movie has some interesting ideas and plot points that show the levels some will try to achieve to reach success and financial "freedom". There is no amount of money or success that can take the place of family.

Just saw it, a great film. I didn't get the impression that Jack knew that it was his wife he would have to sacrifice he just knew it would be someone, and blindly never envisioned it would be her. Course, only seen it once now so on rewatch will listen to her words closer
